On iPhone, choose Set as Wallpaper Pair. On a Pixel phone, choose the same image and apply it first to the Lock screen and then to the Home screen. You can also create companion designs—such as two photos from the same shoot or two artworks sharing colors and a subject—if one crop does not work well on both screens.
Matching does not mean the pictures must be identical. A coordinated pair can share a color palette, motif, lighting style or visual subject while using different compositions. Whichever approach you choose, preview both screens on the actual phone: the lock-screen clock and notifications need clear space, while app icons and labels need a readable background on the Home screen.

Choose what “matching” means for your phone
Before editing anything, decide whether you want a single image on both screens or two images that look deliberately related. This choice affects how you crop, where you place the focal subject and how much editing you need.
Use one image as a pair
A single image is the fastest option. It keeps the colors, subject and lighting exactly consistent and avoids the risk that two files look slightly different after the phone scales them. A portrait photo, landscape scene or illustration can work, provided its important details survive both crops.

One image can still look different on each screen because the phone may position or scale it differently. The lock screen usually has a clock and notification area over the picture; the Home screen has rows of icons and labels. Check both views rather than assuming that a successful lock-screen crop will automatically work behind icons.
Create companion images
Companion wallpapers are useful when one picture cannot satisfy both layouts. Examples include a close-up and a wide view from the same photo session, a subject facing opposite directions, or two illustrations that use the same colors and line style. You can also use the same photograph with different crops: a detailed lock-screen version and a quieter, less busy Home-screen version.
Keep at least one obvious connection between the files. A shared background color, repeated shape, matching gradient or common subject is usually enough. Exact duplication is not required for the pair to feel intentional.
Reserve quiet areas for interface elements
Place the strongest focal element away from the area where the lock-screen time and notifications appear. On the Home screen, avoid putting fine detail directly behind the locations where icons and labels will sit. A smooth sky, wall, gradient or softly blurred section provides visual breathing room without making the image look empty.
These are design recommendations, not platform rules. Apple and Google do not publish one universal amount of “clock-safe” or “icon-safe” space that works on every model. Screen dimensions, aspect ratios, scaling and crop behavior differ, so previewing is more reliable than following a fixed template.
Prepare the images before applying them
Start with a high-resolution portrait composition
Use the largest, cleanest version of your photo or artwork. Begin with a portrait-oriented composition when possible, because phone screens are taller than they are wide. A high-resolution source gives you room to reposition the crop without making the subject look soft, but it does not guarantee a perfect fit on every phone.

There is no single pixel dimension or file specification established for all iPhones and Pixel phones by the support instructions cited here. Do not resize every image to one supposedly universal number. Let the phone show its own crop, then adjust the source image if an important element is cut off.

Make two crops when necessary
Open the image in any editor that can crop and reposition a picture. Keep an untouched original, then create a lock-screen crop and a Home-screen crop if the same file cannot remain legible in both contexts. For example, move a face lower or to one side on the lock screen so it does not sit under the clock, then use a wider or less detailed crop for the Home screen.
- Choose the focal element. Decide what viewers should notice first: a person, pet, building, landscape feature or graphic mark.
- Place it where the interface will not cover it. Leave a calmer region for the lock-screen clock and notifications, and another calm region behind Home-screen icons.
- Check the edges. Phone software may scale or crop the image differently from your editor. Keep important faces, text and logos away from all four edges.
- Export a clean copy. Avoid adding editor borders, watermarks or decorative text that could conflict with the phone’s own clock and labels.
Check contrast and legibility
Look at a lock-screen preview with the time and notification text visible. If the background is the same brightness or color as the interface text, details become difficult to read. A subtle darkening, lightening or blur in the quiet area can improve legibility without changing the subject.
On the Home screen, inspect the labels under several icons, not just the first row. If the wallpaper is busy everywhere, a simpler companion image or a softly blurred version will usually work better than trying to move every icon.
Set a matching pair on iPhone
Apple’s iPhone user guide explains that you can change wallpaper on both the Lock Screen and Home Screen. The current guide path is documented for iOS 26, although Apple can change labels or placement in later releases.
Apply the same picture to both screens
- Open the iPhone wallpaper gallery from the Lock Screen by touching and holding the Lock Screen, or open the wallpaper controls in Settings.
- Create a new Lock Screen or select an existing one, then choose the photo or wallpaper you prepared.
- When the preview is ready, tap Set as Wallpaper Pair. This applies the selected image to the Lock Screen and Home Screen as one pair.
- Wake the phone and inspect both screens. Confirm that the clock, notifications, icons and labels remain readable and that the focal subject has not been clipped.
The wording “Set as Wallpaper Pair” is Apple’s label for the shared-image choice. If you select it, you do not need to repeat the same image through a second setup screen.

Use a companion Home Screen image
- Open the wallpaper gallery or Settings wallpaper controls and select the Lock Screen you want to keep.
- Choose the option to customize the Home Screen rather than accepting the automatic pair.
- Select a different photo, a color or another available Home Screen treatment, then position it so icons and labels remain legible.
- Save the customization and check the Home Screen after returning to it. If the icons disappear into the picture, use a calmer crop, a less detailed companion image or a subtle background treatment.
Apple’s support instructions explicitly allow separate Home Screen customization. That makes a coordinated pair practical: the Lock Screen can carry the detailed subject while the Home Screen uses the same palette with more open space.
If the pair does not look aligned
Return to the wallpaper gallery and edit the crop or choose another source image. Do not judge alignment from a desktop mock-up alone; the phone’s own preview is the relevant test. If the same file is attractive on one screen but not the other, keep the Lock Screen and replace only the Home Screen through Customize Home Screen.
Set matching wallpapers on a Google Pixel
Google’s documented procedure is for Pixel phones. Android menus vary by manufacturer and software version, so these labels should not be treated as universal instructions for every Android model.

- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Wallpaper & style, then tap Change wallpaper.
- Choose your photo or a preset wallpaper. You can use an image stored on the phone or one of the available system choices.
- Select whether the image is for the Lock screen or Home screen. Apply the same image to the other screen as well if you want an identical pair.
- Use the preview to check the crop, clock area, notifications and app icons before applying it.
- Confirm the change, then wake and unlock the phone to inspect both screens in normal use.
Google notes that the available steps and effects depend on the device and software version. If a label or button is missing, open the phone’s Wallpaper & style area and look for separate Lock screen and Home screen choices rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
Use Pixel’s built-in wallpaper creation tools
Pixel phones also offer platform-specific creation options, but eligibility is limited. Google documents AI wallpaper generation for Pixel 8 and later, subject to account requirements and regional availability. Do not assume that an AI wallpaper menu will appear on an older Pixel or on another Android brand.

If you use an AI or emoji design, generate or select it first, then apply it separately to the Lock screen and Home screen using the screen-selection controls. You can also use your own photo instead; built-in generation is optional, not required for a matching pair.

When Pixel effects change the appearance
Some Pixel wallpaper effects are device- or version-specific. A generated design, depth treatment or other effect may not be available in every preview. Treat the final on-phone preview as authoritative. If the effect obscures the clock or makes icons hard to read, choose a simpler image or apply a different image to the Home screen.
What to do on other Android phones
The detailed procedure above is specifically documented for Pixel. Other Android manufacturers may put wallpaper controls under Settings, Personalization, Display or a long press on an empty Home-screen area. Names for paired wallpapers, separate screen selection and preview controls can differ by model and software release.
Look for a workflow with these functions: choose an image, select Lock screen or Home screen, preview the crop and apply the change. If your phone offers only one destination at a time, repeat the process for the second screen. If it offers a combined option, use that for an identical pair and then look for a separate Home-screen customization option when you want a companion image.
Because Android menus are not standardized across manufacturers, follow the labels shown on your device and consult its current support guide if an option is missing. A Pixel instruction should not be used as proof that another model supports the same effects or AI eligibility.

Built-in phone controls are enough for applying existing photos. An optional wallpaper editor is useful when you want precise composition, a device-fit preview or separate exports for each screen. Build the lock-screen version
- Import the original photo or artwork into a portrait canvas.
- Place the focal subject where the lock-screen clock and notification area will not cover it.
- Reduce distracting detail in the interface-heavy area with a gentle gradient, tonal adjustment or blur.
- Preview the image with a clock and notification overlay if the editor provides one.
Build the Home-screen version
- Duplicate the source or create a second canvas using the same palette and visual motif.
- Move the focal subject away from the areas where app icons will cluster.
- Lower contrast behind labels and test both light and dark icon treatments if your phone allows them.
- Export the result without adding text that competes with the phone’s own labels.
Keep the pair visually related
Use one or two shared colors rather than copying every detail. Matching a background hue, light direction or repeating shape is often enough. A close-up lock-screen portrait can pair with a wider scene that contains the same colors; a detailed illustration can pair with a simplified color field derived from it.

Name the files clearly, such as lock-screen and home-screen, so you do not apply the wrong crop during setup. Keep the original source and editable project in case a later phone model needs a different crop.
Native settings versus an optional editor

You do not need an editor to make a matching pair. Use one when the phone’s crop cannot preserve your subject or when you want deliberate, screen-specific compositions.
Preview and troubleshoot before you commit
The subject is clipped
Reposition the image in the phone’s wallpaper preview or return to the editor and make a wider crop. If a face, pet or important object is still cut off on one screen, create separate lock-screen and Home-screen versions rather than forcing one file to do both jobs.
The clock covers the important detail
Move the focal element away from the clock area, select a different image or add a quiet gradient behind the interface. Check the lock screen with notifications visible, because they can occupy more space than the clock alone.
Icons and labels disappear
Use a calmer Home-screen crop, reduce background contrast or choose a less detailed companion image. Inspect several icon rows in both light and dark conditions if your phone supports those appearances.
The image looks different after applying it
Phones can scale and crop images differently from an editor or gallery preview. Reopen the wallpaper controls and use the phone’s own preview to reposition the image. Do not rely on a universal dimension formula; none is established for every model by the cited platform documentation.
An expected menu is missing
Confirm which phone and software version you are using. Pixel’s AI wallpaper feature is documented for Pixel 8 and later with account and availability limits, while emoji wallpaper is documented for Pixel 4a and later. Other Android models may use different menus or omit those tools entirely.

A practical decision checklist
- Choose one image for both screens when its subject survives both crops and you want the fastest setup.
- Choose companion images when the lock-screen clock or Home-screen icons interfere with the same composition.
- Share a palette, motif, subject or visual style so different images still read as a pair.
- Keep important detail away from the clock, notifications, icons and labels.
- Use the actual phone preview before applying the wallpaper.
- On iPhone, select Set as Wallpaper Pair for one image or use Customize Home Screen for a separate Home-screen design.
- On Pixel, open Wallpaper & style, choose Change wallpaper, select the destination screen and apply the image.
- Remember that Android instructions and effects vary by manufacturer and software version.
- Treat Pixel AI and emoji wallpaper as optional, eligibility-limited tools rather than requirements.
How to know the pair is finished
Your wallpapers are ready when the lock-screen time and notifications are readable, Home-screen icons and labels stand out, and the focal subject remains intact on both screens. If those checks pass, the pair is successful whether it uses one identical image or two companion designs.
