To create a loyalty program in WooCommerce, install a points-and-rewards extension, define how customers earn points, set the redemption value and limits, publish eligibility and expiry rules, then test the complete customer journey with a controlled order. WooCommerce’s official Points and Rewards extension covers the basic points-for-discounts model; other extensions add features such as VIP ranks, referrals and birthday rewards.
Choose the right loyalty-program model
Start with the simplest model that meets your objective. A purchase-based program is usually easier to explain and operate than one with many earning actions and tiers.
| Model | What customers do | Typical capabilities to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Points for purchases | Buy eligible products and exchange points for discounts | Purchase earning, conversion rates, minimum redemption, discount caps and expiry |
| Points plus engagement actions | Buy, create an account, submit a review or complete another supported action | Action-specific values, fraud controls and whether returns reverse the award |
| VIP or tiered program | Reach spending or points thresholds for higher benefits | Tier rules, qualification periods, downgrades, tier-only rewards and customer messaging |
| Referral or birthday program | Refer a customer or provide a birthday date | Referral attribution, abuse prevention, consent and the extension’s supported reward types |
WooCommerce Points and Rewards documents purchase, review and account-creation points. The WPGens Loyalty Program documentation describes additional earning options and VIP ranks. Referral extensions are an optional companion, not a requirement for a basic launch.
Install and activate an extension
The exact installation path depends on the extension and how you obtained it.

- Open the new loyalty or points settings area and record the default values before changing them. Keep a backup before importing, deleting or making other destructive data changes.
Set how customers earn points
Define the earning conversion in your store’s currency and write the rule in customer-facing language. For example, a policy might award a stated number of points for each eligible currency unit spent, but the correct rate depends on your margins and the value you want each point to represent.
Decide the calculation basis
- Choose whether points use the product subtotal, a tax-inclusive amount or another documented basis.
- Decide whether shipping charges and taxes earn points.
- Specify whether sale items, excluded categories or products using another promotion are eligible.
- Choose the rounding rule for fractional amounts and display it in the program terms.
- Decide whether an order can earn points when the customer also redeems points.
Do not assume that two extensions calculate the same order differently. Confirm each control in the extension you select.
Set the redemption value and limits
Earning and redemption are separate conversions. Set both explicitly: how many points a customer needs for a unit of discount, and how the resulting discount can be used.
Redemption settings to define
- Conversion value: the points required for a fixed currency discount.
- Partial redemption: whether a customer can use some points or must redeem a complete block.
- Minimum redemption: the smallest points balance or discount that can be applied.
- Maximum discount: the largest discount per cart, order, product or category.
- Eligible products: products or categories that may receive a points-funded discount.
- Reward format: an order discount, coupon or another reward documented by the extension.
WooCommerce’s official Points and Rewards extension requires WooCommerce coupons to be enabled for redemption. It also documents product- and category-level overrides, so check those settings before publishing your policy.

Write clear eligibility and order-status rules
Specify when an order earns points. Many stores award points only after an order reaches a paid or completed status, rather than when checkout is submitted. Your extension may let you select eligible order statuses; use that control to prevent unpaid, failed or cancelled orders from creating a balance.
- State which order statuses trigger the award.
- Explain how cancellations, refunds, chargebacks and partial refunds affect points.
- Decide whether taxes, shipping, sale products and excluded categories count.
- Document whether points can be earned on an order that uses a loyalty discount.
- Make the same exclusions visible at checkout and in the program terms.
Refund and reversal behavior is extension-specific. Test it rather than assuming that a refund automatically removes the original award.
Configure expiry and customer communication
Choose whether points expire and, if they do, how long they remain valid. The official Points and Rewards extension documents a configurable expiry period; WPGens documents expiry settings and a warning email. Publish the exact rule, including when the clock starts and what happens to points earned from a returned order.
Tell customers their balance, earning history, expiry date and redemption conditions in the account area or other supported messages. If you collect birthdays or referral information, explain why it is collected and how it is used. The available documentation does not establish jurisdiction-specific legal or tax requirements, so obtain local advice where those rules apply.

Add optional earning actions and rewards
Only enable actions that you can verify and support operationally.
Common optional actions
- Account registration
- Product reviews
- Birthdays
- Referrals
- Social or marketing actions supported by the selected extension
Assign each action a value, define any frequency limit and decide how staff will handle duplicate accounts, fraudulent reviews or self-referrals. Do not advertise a reward type, such as free shipping, unless the extension documents it and your store can honor it through checkout.
Plan administration, data and migration
A loyalty program needs an operating procedure, not only front-end settings.
- Give staff a documented process for manual adjustments and customer disputes.
- Decide how points are handled after refunds, cancellations and account changes.
- Schedule exports or backups before major configuration changes.
- Review import and migration options before changing extensions.
- Limit access to customer balances and transaction histories to appropriate staff.
WooCommerce documents points export and a data-deletion option. Deleting all points and rewards is described as irreversible, so verify the current interface and create a recoverable backup before using it.

Test the complete customer flow before launch
The settings page is not enough. Use a test customer and a controlled order in a staging environment when possible.
- Create a test account and place an order containing an eligible item and any exclusions you plan to use.
- Move the order through the configured status and confirm when points appear.
- Recalculate the expected balance using your published earning rule, tax and shipping treatment, and rounding method.
- Redeem the minimum balance, a partial balance if supported, and an amount near the maximum discount cap.
- Confirm that product, category and cart restrictions behave as intended.
- Test a cancellation, full refund and partial refund to see whether points are reversed correctly.
- Check the customer-facing balance, history, emails and expiry wording.
- Repeat the test with a sale item, a coupon and a mixed cart if those cases are allowed.
Launch only after the displayed balance, discount and order-status behavior match your written policy. Re-test after WooCommerce, WordPress or the loyalty extension is updated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare extensions by requirements, not by a generic “best” claim
Product pages document different feature sets, but the available material does not provide an independent head-to-head benchmark or evidence that one extension will increase a particular store’s retention or revenue. Use a requirements checklist instead.
| Requirement | Questions to ask before installation |
|---|---|
| Program model | Does it support simple points, VIP ranks or both? |
| Earning actions | Can customers earn through purchases, reviews, signup, referrals or birthdays? |
| Redemption | Are conversion value, partial use, minimums, caps and reward types configurable? |
| Accounting rules | Can you control order status, tax and shipping treatment, exclusions, refunds and expiry? |
| Operations | Are manual adjustments, exports, customer messages and deletion tools available? |
| Compatibility | Does the current listing confirm compatibility with your WordPress, WooCommerce, checkout and email setup? |
Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Copying an example points rate without checking margins.
- Defining earning points but not defining their redemption value.
- Allowing points on unpaid or cancelled orders.
- Leaving tax, shipping, sale-item and refund treatment undocumented.
- Promising rewards that the extension or checkout cannot deliver.
- Deleting balances without a verified backup.
- Skipping a controlled-order test after configuration or updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a WooCommerce extension to run a points program?

When should points be awarded?
Choose an eligible order status, commonly a paid or completed state, and test cancellations and refunds. The available controls differ by extension.
The Bottom Line
A reliable WooCommerce loyalty program has two precisely defined conversions, explicit eligibility and expiry rules, operational controls for refunds and adjustments, and a tested customer-facing redemption flow. Choose the extension whose documented controls match those requirements, then verify compatibility and behavior after every major update.
