To give a product away with a WooCommerce coupon, use a gift-capable extension. WooCommerce core can create fixed-cart, fixed-product and percentage coupons, but the automatic “add this product to the cart for free” behavior described here comes from Free Gift Coupons or Smart Coupons.
What you need before creating the coupon
- A WordPress administrator account and WooCommerce.
- Coupons enabled at WooCommerce > Settings > General. WooCommerce documents this prerequisite in its coupon-management guide.
- A gift-capable extension installed and activated. Confirm the extension’s current availability, compatibility, price and license terms on the vendor site; those commercial details change.
- A published product to use as the gift. If you do not want it listed in shop searches, you can set its catalog visibility to Hidden, but that is not a complete purchasing-access restriction through every possible route.
Choose the right WooCommerce method

Create a coupon with WooCommerce Free Gift Coupons
- Install or add the Free Gift Coupons extension through the WooCommerce account or subscription process described in its documentation.
- Open Marketing > Coupons and select Add Coupon. On WooCommerce versions older than 4.4, the menu may be WooCommerce > Coupons.
- Enter the redemption code customers will type. In the coupon’s General section, use the Free Gifts field for a coupon that also has another discount, or choose the Free Gift discount type when the offer is only the gift.
- Search for and select the product to give away. A variable product can be selected; the shopper then chooses attributes such as size or color.
- Set the gift quantity and any usage restrictions or limits. To require a purchase, add the qualifying product under Usage Restrictions > Products.
- Configure gift-shipping behavior if needed, then publish the coupon.
At checkout, the customer enters the code and clicks Apply Coupon. WooCommerce says the code-application message appears and the free gift is automatically added to the cart: “When the customer enters the appropriate code and clicks ‘Apply Coupon’ a small message is displayed saying the code was applied and the free gift is automatically added to the cart.”
Make the gift quantity follow the purchase
Free Gift Coupons can synchronize gift quantity with a required product. For example, a promotion can provide one poster for each T-shirt purchased. Add the T-shirt under Usage Restrictions > Products, then configure the quantity-sync option in the gift settings. The extension documentation does not currently support an item-quantity rule such as “buy nine widgets, get one free” in this workflow; use a different promotion design if that exact threshold is required.
Apply restrictions and shipping rules
Free-gift coupons use ordinary coupon restrictions and limits, including conditions such as minimum cart total, eligible products and customer email address. The extension also includes an option to avoid shipping charges for gift products, but a free-shipping method must be enabled in the store for that arrangement to work.

Create the same promotion with Smart Coupons
- Install and activate Smart Coupons, then create or edit a coupon.
- Enter the coupon’s general details and open Actions.
- Under Add products to cart, select the product that should be gifted and set its quantity.
- Set with discount of to 100%.
- If the coupon should discount only the gifted product, set the coupon amount to 0 so other cart items are not reduced.
- Save or publish the coupon and test it in a customer-facing cart.
Smart Coupons also documents a separate setup that lets customers choose one gift from a group of products, with a minimum-spend condition when required. Follow its gift-choice instructions rather than adding every possible gift to one coupon.
Cart Block and variable-product behavior
The Free Gift Coupons documentation states that it works with WooCommerce’s Cart block. Simple gifts are added automatically. For a variable gift, the shopper sees a Choose options link, goes to the product page to select a variation, and returns to the cart. Test this flow with your theme and checkout before advertising the coupon.

Test the coupon before publishing it
- Use an account and email address that satisfy the coupon restrictions.
- Add the required qualifying product, if any, and verify that the gift appears only after the code is applied.
- Check that the gift quantity, variation selection and 100% discount are correct.
- Remove the qualifying product and confirm the coupon no longer grants an unintended gift.
- Review shipping totals, tax treatment and the behavior of both the classic cart and Cart block if your store supports both.
- Test an expired, usage-limited or otherwise ineligible code to confirm the customer receives a clear rejection.
Common setup decisions
Should the coupon require a purchase?
For a gift-with-purchase offer, add the qualifying product to the coupon’s product restrictions. For a sample or standalone giveaway, leave that requirement out and use a dedicated free-gift coupon.
Can customers choose among several gifts?
In the Free Gift Coupons workflow, all products registered with the coupon are added when it is applied; shoppers do not choose one from that set. Use Smart Coupons’ documented gift-choice option when selection is required.

Can I hide the gift product?
Set catalog visibility to Hidden to keep the product out of normal catalog listings. The extension documentation cautions that hiding does not explicitly prevent purchase through every other route, so use additional store controls if exclusivity matters.
What if I only need a normal discount?
Use WooCommerce core coupons when a fixed-cart, fixed-product or percentage discount is sufficient. The gift-product workflows above require their respective extensions.
