A family safe word can help a child discreetly ask a trusted adult for help or confirm a pickup plan, but it is only one part of safety—not proof that an urgent caller is genuine. Choose a memorable word your family does not use routinely, agree exactly what it signals and what happens next, share it only with the adults who need it, and verify alarming calls through a separate, known contact method.
Choose a word your family can remember under stress
Pick a word that is easy for the child to say, spell, or text, and easy for the trusted adults to remember. Avoid a word that comes up regularly in family conversation. The Australian Government’s National Office for Child Safety offers “magenta,” “pineapple,” and “zebra” as examples of arbitrary choices; these are examples, not tested security recommendations.

The family can use one word with all trusted adults or choose different words for different people or situations. The important point is that everyone who is expected to respond knows the agreed word and its meaning. The National Office for Child Safety describes a safe word as something a young person can say or text to a trusted adult when feeling unsafe, scared, or uncomfortable: My safety team – teenagers.
Define the signal and the response
Before anyone needs the word, agree who may use it, when to use it, and what the recipient should do. “I need help,” “check this pickup,” and “I am safe” are different messages. A word with no agreed meaning can leave both the child and adult unsure what to do.

- For a distress signal: Decide how the child can use the word or text discreetly and what the adult will do next, such as calling, arranging a safe pickup, or contacting local help.
- For pickup verification: Agree which adults are authorized to collect the child and what the child should do if the person cannot provide the word or the arrangement feels wrong. Coordinate this with the school or childcare provider’s own release procedures.
- For reassurance: If you use a word to tell a trusted adult that the child is okay, make that meaning distinct from a request for help.
Fairfax County Family Services describes code words used either to signal a need for help or to let a child communicate that they are okay. It also emphasizes that a child is not responsible for intervening in violence or stopping it; a distress signal should bring adult help, not place the burden of resolving danger on the child. Share the word with the right adults and practice
Tell the child and the trusted adults who are expected to respond. The National Office for Child Safety recommends identifying a safety team that can include trusted adults inside and outside the home, and making sure those adults know how they may be asked to help. The South African Police Service also advises parents to use code words with people trusted to fetch children and to teach the words to the child: Children Safety | Parents.

Practice calmly so the child knows what to do if they cannot safely say the word aloud, the adult does not know it, or a pickup arrangement changes. Keep the exercise simple and age-appropriate; the reviewed guidance supports teaching and practicing safety skills but does not prescribe a universal rehearsal schedule or rotation rule. If you use separate words for separate situations, make the distinction clear to everyone who needs to act on them.

Ask the school or childcare provider how it authorizes pickups, notifies caregivers, and handles reunification during an emergency. A household safe word does not replace the provider’s release policy. Make sure the family’s instructions fit the institution’s process and that contact details are current.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends keeping children’s emergency plans and contact information up to date and reviewing the plan yearly. Its guidance is at Keeping Children Safe Away from Home.
Verify urgent family-emergency calls independently
If someone calls or messages claiming that a relative is in trouble and urgently needs money or information, pause before responding. A familiar voice, personal details, or knowledge of a family word is not enough to establish identity. The Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers may use pressure, secrecy, impersonation, and AI voice cloning to make an emergency sound convincing.

- Call the person who is supposedly in trouble using a number already saved or independently looked up—not a number supplied in the urgent message.
- If you cannot reach them, contact another trusted family member or friend to check the story.
- Do not send money or disclose sensitive information until you have verified the request through an independent route.
The FTC’s consumer guidance, dated September 27, 2023, explains these callback steps and cautions against trusting a voice just because it sounds familiar: Scammers Use Fake Emergencies To Steal Your Money. A safe word can support a family plan, but it cannot guarantee that a caller is genuine or replace independent verification.

If someone is in immediate danger, contact the emergency service for your location. The National Office for Child Safety’s Australian guidance identifies Triple Zero (000) for emergencies; that number is specific to Australia, not a universal emergency number. Families elsewhere should use their local emergency number.
