To rotate cartoon episodes on a YouTube livestream, put authorized video files in an OBS Studio VLC Video source, choose ordered or shuffled playback, and turn on Loop Playlist. Then schedule a YouTube live event and connect OBS with the event’s server URL and stream key. The playlist controls what OBS plays; YouTube scheduling and the encoder connection make it a live broadcast. A local setup depends on the computer, OBS, VLC, power, and internet connection staying available.
1. Confirm you have rights to livestream every episode
Before making a rotation, confirm that your rights cover the specific cartoon episodes, livestreaming, YouTube, and the territories where viewers may watch. Finding an episode online or owning a personal copy does not establish broadcast rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights, including relevant music rights. Read YouTube’s live-stream terms.

Keep only files covered by those rights in the playlist. If a license covers only certain territories, dates, or uses, make the schedule conform to it rather than assuming that a YouTube stream is covered automatically.
2. Prepare the daily episode rotation
Choose a repeatable structure
Decide whether each day should follow a fixed sequence or use a randomized order. A fixed sequence is useful when you want episodes to play in a planned progression; shuffle is useful when order is less important. Give files clear names so you can identify episodes when building and checking the playlist.

OBS’s VLC Video source accepts multiple media items and provides playlist controls. Supported local video formats and source behavior are documented by the OBS Project; check its Media Sources documentation if a file does not appear or play as expected.
Install the required software
Install OBS Studio and VLC on the computer that will run the stream. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source. If you use 64-bit OBS, the OBS documentation specifies matching 64-bit VLC. Keep the video files accessible on that computer while the broadcast is running.

3. Build and loop the playlist in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene you intend to use for the cartoon stream.
- Add the playlist source: in the Sources panel, select +, choose VLC Video, and create or select the source.
- Add the authorized episode files to the source’s playlist. Arrange them in the intended order if you are not shuffling.
- Set playback behavior: enable Loop Playlist to repeat the playlist after its last item. Enable shuffle if you want OBS to vary the order rather than follow the listed sequence. Leave shuffle off for a predictable sequence.
- Check the scene to make sure the video fits the canvas and that the audio is present at a suitable level. Inspect transitions between files, not just the first episode.
A VLC Video source is the multi-item playlist control described here. OBS’s Media Source can loop a single file, but it is not the documented multi-file playlist option.

- In YouTube Studio, schedule a live stream if you want a watch page in advance and the option for viewers to receive reminders. YouTube’s live encoder help explains scheduling and encoder setup.
- Copy the event’s stream URL (also called the server URL) and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or the applicable YouTube connection option, and enter or connect the server URL and stream key as required by your setup.
- Start the stream output in OBS, then check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream status before making the event public or relying on it as a continuous channel.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance is not a guarantee that a single broadcast can run indefinitely or that a long stream will be uninterrupted. Plan and monitor the broadcast accordingly.

5. Verify playback before relying on the rotation
- Confirm the live preview shows the intended scene and that both picture and sound are working.
- Check that the playlist advances at file boundaries and returns to the beginning when it reaches the end.
- If shuffle is on, verify that the source plays from the intended set of files; if order matters, turn shuffle off and review the list.
- Watch the stream status in YouTube Studio and keep the computer, OBS, VLC, media files, power, and network available for the duration of a local broadcast.
These checks help catch configuration problems; they do not establish a particular uptime or guarantee against a computer, connection, or platform interruption.

A license may not prevent a live interruption by itself
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder, warn the creator, temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream, or take further action after a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. For licensed third-party content, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an automated interruption. Permission and monetization eligibility are separate
Having permission to stream cartoons does not by itself establish that a channel qualifies for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies also apply to livestreams and assess whether content is original and authentic. In a clarification dated July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed its “repetitious content” policy “inauthentic content” and described repetitive or mass-produced material as potentially ineligible. Reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement. Do not assume that a licensed episode rotation will earn ad revenue. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
7. Choose between a local playlist and hosted playout
OBS documents local playlist playback controls; a hosted playout calendar is a different workflow. The provider playout.video documents playlists, looping, and recurring calendar entries. Its documentation establishes that this workflow exists, not its uptime or comparative performance. Review a provider’s current terms, capabilities, and recovery arrangements before relying on it.
