Each social network’s own API publishes it, and each network sets its own rules on who can post, what they can post, and whether your app is approved. Plan the app around the second system, because that is where projects stall.
The core design: two layers that don’t depend on each other
An AI text model has no permission to publish anywhere. A scheduler therefore needs:

- A drafting layer. A text-generation model that writes captions, rewrites them for each network’s tone and length, and suggests variants. A human reviews the output before it is queued.
- A delivery layer. Per-network integrations that handle user authorization, media rules, network-specific payloads, publish status and retries.
This split is an architectural recommendation rather than a platform rule. It follows from how OpenAI’s text-generation documentation (text in, text out) differs from TikTok’s network-specific publishing flow. A practical benefit is that you can swap the AI model without touching publishing, and add or remove a network without touching drafting.

What a minimal build includes
- Account connection. Each user authorizes your app on each network. You store the resulting tokens securely and track their state.
- Post composer. One master draft, with per-network variants that the AI can generate and the user can edit.
- Media handling. Upload and host images and video. Some networks require media URLs from a verified domain.
- Queue and scheduler. Store the target time, network and status for each post, and run a worker that fires at the right moment.
- Status tracking. Record whether each post was accepted, is processing, published or failed. Show failures to the user with a way to retry.
- Approval step. Require a person to approve AI-generated text before it goes into the queue.
TikTok: approval and audit come first
TikTok for Developers documents the path in its app-registration and Direct Post guides (pages marked updated August 4, 2026).

Registering and getting to production
- Register an app, select the products and scopes you need, and submit the production configuration for review.
- Web and desktop registrations require an official website URL. For apps created after September 9, 2024, the Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and web/desktop URLs must be verified.
- Content Posting API upload URLs require verification regardless of when the app was created.
- The review submission asks you to explain how each product and scope works and to provide at least one end-to-end demo video.
Direct posting requirements
- You need the Content Posting API product, approval for the
video.publishscope, and authorization from the target user. Your app then uses that user’s access token and open ID. - The documented flow queries creator information, initiates the post upload, then checks status asynchronously using a
publish_id. The guide currently covers video and photo posts. - For video URL pulls and photo URLs, the guide specifies using a verified domain or URL prefix.
The audit limit
This is the point most likely to surprise a builder. TikTok states: “All content posted by unaudited clients will be restricted to private viewing mode.” Public posts require your API client to pass TikTok’s audit, so build that time into your schedule. Approval timelines were not stated in the sources, so don’t promise users a launch date.
Instagram: be precise about who you support
Meta’s Instagram API documentation for the Facebook Login path sets these boundaries:

- The Instagram account must be linked to a Facebook Page.
- Consumer (personal) accounts are not accessible through this path.
- Publishing is available to professional accounts, except Stories, which are limited to business accounts.
Your onboarding should therefore detect or ask about account type and explain to personal-account users why they can’t connect. The documentation I reviewed is hosted as an official Meta collection and shows no exact update date, and Meta’s requirements change. Check the current Meta documentation before you write code, and don’t advertise support for every Instagram account or format.

Facebook, LinkedIn, X and others each have their own permissions, costs and review processes. Those were not verified for this article, so check each network’s developer documentation before committing to it. A reasonable approach is to launch with one or two networks whose requirements you’ve confirmed, and add others once the delivery layer is stable.

Direct integrations or a managed publishing API?
Some developers use a third-party publishing API instead of integrating each network. One public developer thread asks exactly this: which third-party API is best for posting images to Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X from a custom tool. That is a question, not evidence about any vendor, and I have not verified any provider’s current coverage, pricing or terms. A managed service may reduce integration work, while direct integrations give you more control over the user experience. That trade-off is a judgment, not a documented finding, and it depends on your situation.

Using AI well inside the scheduler
- Generate per-network variants from one master draft, and let the user edit each one.
- Keep a human approval step before scheduling, so nothing AI-written publishes unreviewed.
- Validate generated text against each network’s limits before queueing, not at publish time.
- Keep AI output separate from publish records so you can see what was generated, what was edited and what was posted.
Order of work
- Choose one or two launch networks and read their current developer terms.
- Build the composer and queue with a stub publisher.
- Add the AI drafting step with human approval.
- Implement one network’s authorization and publishing end to end.
- For TikTok, prepare your website, Terms, Privacy Policy, verified domains and demo video, then submit for review and audit.
- Add status polling, error display and retries before onboarding real users.
The Bottom Line
Build the AI drafting step quickly, because it is the easy part. The schedule depends on network approvals: TikTok’s review and audit, and Meta’s account-type and Page-linking rules. Support only the accounts and formats the current documentation allows.
