Use Fitbit’s SDK Toolchain if your model is an officially supported Fitbit OS development target. It is a code-based workflow, not a visual watch-face generator: you create a clock-face project, compile it with npx fitbit-build, test it on a supported simulator or device, and then follow Fitbit’s distribution rules if you plan to share it. If you own a Versa 4 or Sense 2, stop before installing anything: the available community instructions describe an unofficial, version-sensitive workaround rather than an officially supported SDK or public third-party App Gallery route.
What “custom Fitbit watch face” can mean
Fitbit uses clock face in much of its documentation, while users often search for watch face. They mean the same thing here: the screen shown when you check the time. There are three different tasks that are easy to confuse:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Selecting an existing face: choosing one already listed in the Fitbit Gallery.
- Authoring a face: writing and packaging your own Fitbit OS clock-face application.
- Distributing a face: installing it privately or submitting it for public availability, where the product and Fitbit’s policies allow that.
The Fitbit Sense user manual documents the first task. The Fitbit SDK Toolchain documentation covers the second. Neither source establishes that the normal consumer gallery can accept a file you built yourself. Treat those as separate workflows.

| Path | Supported context | What you can do | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitbit OS SDK Toolchain | Fitbit OS development targets that Fitbit currently supports | Build a coded clock-face application; the official repository documents npx fitbit-build |
You still have to verify model compatibility, test behavior and satisfy any distribution requirements |
| Fitbit app Clock Faces gallery | Consumer flow documented for Fitbit Sense | Browse, select, save, switch and remove faces supplied in the gallery | It does not document creating or sideloading a user-built face |
| Community Versa 4/Sense 2 workaround | Unofficial guide and custom build configuration | Attempts to adapt projects, test against older targets and install or privately distribute a build | No official SDK or public third-party App Gallery support is established; instructions can become stale or fail |
First check your Fitbit model
Model support determines whether the official route is realistic. Do not assume that a face built for one generation will run on another.

Supported Fitbit OS development targets
For a supported target, start with the Fitbit Developer Portal and the current SDK documentation. The Google-Health-API Fitbit SDK Toolchain repository describes its purpose plainly: “The Fitbit SDK Toolchain is used to build Fitbit OS apps and clock faces.” That is evidence of a developer toolchain, not a no-code editor. The same repository documents compiling a project with npx fitbit-build and directs developers to Fitbit’s portal and SDK forums for setup and help.
Because target availability, package versions and account procedures can change, verify the model and current requirements in the portal before creating the project. A command that successfully compiles a project does not, by itself, prove that the resulting face can be installed on your watch or accepted into the gallery.
Fitbit Sense versus Sense 2
The original Fitbit Sense manual explains how to select gallery faces. That consumer documentation should not be read as a developer guide, and it should not be generalized to Sense 2. The community guide reviewed for Versa 4 and Sense 2 describes those newer models as lacking an officially released SDK and official public third-party App Gallery support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVersa 4 versus Versa 3
Versa 3 appears in the community workaround as a simulator or comparison target. That does not make Versa 3 and Versa 4 interchangeable. A project that runs in a Versa 3 or Sense simulator may still fail on a Versa 4, and simulator success is not proof of production-device compatibility.
What you need before writing code
- A computer and development environment: the cited workflow is software development. No special physical tool, replacement part or accessory is established as necessary.
- The Fitbit SDK Toolchain and a project: install the current toolchain according to Fitbit’s developer documentation rather than copying old package versions from an archived guide.
- A confirmed device target: record the exact model and check that it is listed as a supported development target before you invest time in the design.
- A testing route: use a supported simulator and, when available for your target, a compatible physical device for final checks.
- Distribution awareness: if you intend to share the face, read the current Fitbit Platform Terms of Service for Developers, App Gallery guidelines and Application Distribution Agreement.
The documentation reviewed does not establish one universal operating-system requirement, current SDK release number or mandatory hardware accessory. Those details should come from the current Fitbit Developer Portal for your computer and target model.

Build a custom clock face with the official SDK route
1. Confirm that your model is an eligible target
Open the Fitbit Developer Portal and compare your exact model with the current SDK support information. Keep the model name in your project notes. “Sense” is not a safe shorthand for “Sense 2,” and “Versa” does not identify a single compatible generation.
If the portal does not list the model as a supported development target, do not proceed as though a normal SDK project will install. Move to the model-specific support section below and treat any community method as experimental.
2. Create a clock-face project
Use the current Fitbit project template or project-creation instructions supplied in the developer documentation. Select the clock-face application type rather than an ordinary app. A clock face normally has a visual layout, resources such as images or fonts, and code that updates time or other permitted data. The exact file names and APIs depend on the SDK version, so use the version-matched reference instead of relying on an old tutorial.
Plan the face before implementation. Decide which elements are essential at a glance, how they will look in bright and dark conditions, and what happens when a value is unavailable. Keep text large enough to read on the target’s display and avoid placing critical information under system indicators or cutouts.
3. Add your design and behavior
Implement the layout and logic inside the project. Typical design decisions include an analog or digital time display, date, battery state and activity data that the platform makes available to that target. Use only APIs and permissions documented for the selected model and SDK release. A face that depends on a sensor, complication or permission unavailable on the target should fail gracefully rather than showing stale or blank data.

Optimize images and update frequency. Redrawing every element unnecessarily can increase power use and make transitions look rough. Separate static artwork from values that change each minute or second, following the performance guidance for the SDK version you installed.
4. Compile the project
From the project directory, run the documented build command:
npx fitbit-build
The command compiles the Fitbit OS project; it does not complete account setup, sign the application for every distribution scenario, test every device, or submit the face to the App Gallery. Treat a successful build as a checkpoint. If it fails, read the first error rather than repeatedly rerunning the command: dependency mismatches, unsupported APIs, malformed resources and target configuration errors require different fixes.
5. Test in the simulator and on hardware when supported
Start with the simulator associated with your target. Check the face at each supported orientation and state, including:
- normal time display and the first launch after installation;
- minute and date changes, including midnight and month boundaries;
- empty, delayed or unavailable data;
- low-battery and reduced-power behavior where applicable;
- long labels, unusual numbers and localization settings;
- screen wake, dimming and return from another app.
Then test on a supported physical watch if Fitbit permits that workflow for your target. Compare rendering, touch behavior and battery impact with the simulator. A simulator is useful for finding layout and logic errors, but it cannot establish that an unsupported model accepts the package.

6. Prepare distribution only after compatibility testing
If the face is for your own development use, follow the current developer instructions for installing a test build. If you want other people to use it, review Fitbit’s publication process before promising a download or gallery listing. Fitbit’s developer terms define “Application(s)” or “Developer Applications” to include applications or clock faces, including companion software, that interact with the Fitbit Platform or are intended for a Fitbit Product.
The same terms state that distribution on supported Fitbit products is conditional on complying with App Gallery guidelines and agreeing to the Application Distribution Agreement. Read the current terms rather than assuming that a privately installed test build can be published unchanged.
If you only want to change the face on a Fitbit Sense
Use the gallery workflow instead of the SDK when your goal is simply to choose a different available design. The Fitbit Sense manual describes this sequence; labels can vary slightly with app updates:
- Open the Fitbit mobile app.
- Open the device tile for your Sense.
- Choose Clock Faces, then All Clocks.
- Browse or search the available gallery faces.
- Open a face and select it to apply it to the watch.
- Return to the saved-face area when you want to switch or remove a face.
The manual says that Sense can save up to five clock faces. That is a Sense-specific documented limit, not a universal limit for every Fitbit model. Gallery selection gives you an existing face; it does not show how to author a new one or sideload a package produced by your own code.

What the unofficial Versa 4 and Sense 2 workaround involves
For Versa 4 and Sense 2, the available community guide is not an official Fitbit support document. It says those models lack an officially released SDK and official public third-party App Gallery support, then describes adapting projects with pre-release dependencies and custom build targets.
Best Value
The general sequence described by the guide
- Start with an existing Fitbit OS project rather than assuming a standard current target will work.
- Modify dependencies and build configuration to use the guide’s target aliases and pre-release components.
- Build the project and test it against Versa 3 or Sense simulator targets, as the guide describes.
- Attempt installation or private distribution using the methods available to that build and account.
This is a description of the guide’s approach, not a guaranteed recipe. Its version examples are framed as time-specific and should not be presented as current recommendations without checking package releases and Fitbit’s present policies. Target identifiers can change, private installation can be blocked, and a build that installs may still display incorrectly or lose connectivity after a firmware update.
When not to use the workaround
- Do not use it for a work or safety-critical watch where reliable updates are required.
- Do not treat simulator success on Versa 3 or Sense as proof of Versa 4 or Sense 2 support.
- Do not assume that private distribution creates a path to the public App Gallery.
- Do not install unknown binaries when you cannot inspect their source or verify their origin.
If you still experiment, keep the original project backed up, document every dependency and target change, and be prepared to remove the test build and restore the official watch software.
Distribution, permissions and branding
A custom face is software, not merely an image. Your code, fonts, photographs and icons must be yours or licensed for this use. Fitbit’s developer terms also contain restrictions concerning Fitbit logos and marks. Avoid presenting an unofficial face as Fitbit-made, and check the current brand guidance before using Fitbit names or visual assets in a listing.
Publication is a separate decision from creation. A locally compiled package may be suitable for development while failing review requirements, lacking required metadata or targeting a product that Fitbit does not accept for third-party publication. Check the current App Gallery guidelines and Application Distribution Agreement for eligibility, testing, privacy and content obligations.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| The project will not compile | Dependency, resource, API or target configuration error | Read the first compiler error, compare the project with the SDK version’s template and remove unsupported APIs before changing multiple settings |
| The build succeeds but the watch will not install it | The model may not be a supported target, or the installation path may require additional developer setup | Verify the exact model in the Fitbit Developer Portal; do not infer support from a successful build |
| The face installs but shows blank values | The target does not expose the requested data, permission is missing, or the update logic is not handling unavailable values | Test with empty-data states and use only APIs documented for that model |
| The layout works in the simulator but not on the watch | Display metrics, rendering behavior or firmware differ | Check the physical device at multiple power and wake states, then adjust assets and redraw logic |
| A Versa 4 or Sense 2 build stops working after an update | An unofficial target or pre-release dependency changed | Remove the experimental build, restore the supported configuration and re-check current Fitbit documentation |
| The face is not visible in the gallery | Building or privately installing does not equal public publication | Review eligibility, submission and approval requirements in the current App Gallery documentation |
How to decide which route is right
- You want a different look today: use the Fitbit app’s gallery on a model whose manual documents that flow.
- You want to learn development or create a maintainable face: choose an officially supported Fitbit OS target and use the SDK Toolchain.
- You own Versa 4 or Sense 2 and want to experiment: understand that the community method is unofficial, version-sensitive and not a promise of App Gallery access.
- You want to publish for other users: verify target eligibility and distribution agreements before writing the final release build.
Bottom line
There is a documented way to create a custom Fitbit clock face without relying on a visual generator: code it with the Fitbit SDK Toolchain and compile the project with npx fitbit-build. That route applies only where Fitbit currently supports the device and development workflow. The Fitbit Sense gallery lets you select existing faces, not create your own. Versa 4 and Sense 2 require particular caution because the available build instructions are an unofficial community workaround, not an endorsed SDK or guaranteed publication path.
