That is not the same as a verified, gap-free 4K 60fps broadcast to YouTube Live: VideoLAN’s documented playlist example sends MPEG-TS over HTTP, while YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingest. Treat those as separate steps, and validate the exact VLC build and ingest setup before relying on it for a public stream.
What VLC can—and cannot—guarantee
VideoLAN’s VLM example queues multiple input entries on one broadcast channel. VLM starts the next input when the preceding media ends, and the example uses sout-keep so the outgoing stream does not break at the end of an item. This documents successive playback and output continuity; it does not establish a measured zero-gap transition on YouTube.

The example’s destination is a local HTTP MPEG-TS stream. VideoLAN’s separate HTTP guide describes HTTP as a pull protocol: a receiving client requests the stream from the publishing device. YouTube’s live encoder guidance, by contrast, specifies RTMP or RTMPS. The official examples do not show how to connect VLM’s playlist output directly to YouTube’s ingest while retaining the playlist, nor do they confirm that the example’s HTTP output is accepted by YouTube. Do not substitute a LAN address for YouTube’s ingest URL.
Build the documented local VLM playlist
This is the VideoLAN-documented playlist pattern for a local HTTP broadcast. Replace the sample media paths with files available to the machine running VLC. The configuration demonstrates the playlist and local output only; it is not a complete YouTube publishing command.

sout-keep, andfile-caching=1000. In outline, the configuration has this shape:new channel broadcast enabled setup channel input "path/to/first-video" setup channel input "path/to/second-video" setup channel input "path/to/third-video" setup channel output #duplicate{dst=std{access=http,mux=ts,dst=:8090/stream}} setup channel option sout-keep setup channel option file-caching=1000 control channel playUse the precise syntax and quoting from VideoLAN’s VLM playlist example for your installed VLC version. Paths, spaces, and platform-specific file locations must be handled correctly. The outline above is not a verified YouTube output configuration.

Test the local stream through every file boundary. Confirm that the next item starts, audio is present, and the output remains available. The
sout-keepoption is intended to keep streaming from breaking at the end of an item; it does not prove that picture and audio transitions are gap-free.
VideoLAN also documents GUI streaming through Media > Stream, where you choose an output destination such as HTTP and a transcoding profile. That is a graphical alternative for a local stream, not a documented, tested YouTube destination. Its transcoding guides describe pipeline capabilities, but do not supply a YouTube-ready 4K/60 RTMPS VLM recipe.
What YouTube requires for 4K at 60fps
YouTube’s current encoder settings page (accessed 2026) recommends the following ingest settings for 4K/2160p at 60fps. These are encoder targets; they do not establish that a particular VLC configuration can produce or deliver them.

| Setting | YouTube guidance for 4K/2160p at 60fps |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 |
| Bitrate | H.264: 50 Mbps recommended, 14 Mbps minimum. AV1 or H.265: 35 Mbps recommended, 10 Mbps minimum. |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS |
| Frame rate | Up to 60fps |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| Latency | Low-latency optimization is unavailable for 4K; YouTube sets the stream to normal latency. |
Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance as the authority for ingest targets. A 50 Mbps recommendation is not a promise about your internet connection: test that your upload can sustain the configured bitrate reliably, with headroom for normal variation.

Connect an encoder to YouTube Live safely
-
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and use the displayed stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. YouTube explains this process in its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
-
Treat the stream key as a credential: it functions like the stream’s password and address. Do not paste it into a public post, screenshot, or shared VLM file. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers selecting or creating keys and changing stream options in Live Control Room.

Configure the encoder for YouTube’s required destination protocol and the 4K/60 settings above. Do not assume the VLM HTTP/MPEG-TS output is interchangeable with YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
-
If you use VLC as the playlist source and a separate compatible encoder or relay for YouTube ingest, treat that as a workflow to verify—not as a VideoLAN-documented end-to-end recipe. Confirm the relay accepts VLC’s output, preserves the required codec, bitrate, CBR and keyframe behavior, and carries audio continuously.

Validate the whole broadcast before going public
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. Test the complete playlist, not only its first clip: file boundaries are where timing, audio, or output continuity can change.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC plays locally, but YouTube does not receive the broadcast. | The local HTTP/MPEG-TS playlist output is not the same as YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS ingest. | Verify the destination protocol and encoder or relay path. Do not enter the sample LAN URL where YouTube’s stream URL is required. |
| A file does not start or the playlist stops early. | A media path, filename, quoting, or VLM configuration entry may be wrong. | Check each input path and compare the file’s syntax with VideoLAN’s VLM example; test the playlist locally. |
| The output drops at a file boundary. | The VLM output configuration may not preserve the stream, or the next item may fail to load. | Check the sout-keep option and the next input’s path. It is intended to prevent the output from breaking at an item’s end, but is not a guarantee of gap-free YouTube transitions. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health. | The configured bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain, or encoder settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. | Monitor the connection and stream health; verify CBR, codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval. |
| The stream is not 4K/60 even though the files are. | Source-file properties alone do not establish the delivered stream’s resolution and frame rate; an encoding or relay stage may change them. | Inspect the received stream and each stage’s output settings. The available official VLC examples do not establish a direct 4K/60 YouTube configuration. |
| Video appears but audio is missing or interrupted. | The audio codec or handoff between media items may be incompatible or discontinuous. | Use a YouTube-supported AAC or MP3 audio output and test representative audio across each transition. |
