A 24/7 stream takes more than a playlist: plan for power, network interruptions, monitoring and recovery—and keep a separate archive, because YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours.
What a 24/7 stream does—and does not do
A continuous stream plays existing recordings as a live broadcast. Viewers tune in while it is running; they are not choosing an individual lesson from an on-demand library. YouTube treats the broadcast event and the settings used to send its video as related but separate resources, a distinction described in its Live Streaming API documentation.

Use the live feed for continuous viewing, and publish individual lessons separately when viewers need dependable, searchable replay. A long live page is not a substitute for a complete lesson archive.

Check that the channel can go live
YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16 years old. Account or regional details may affect eligibility, so check YouTube’s Get started with live streaming page before scheduling the broadcast.

Prepare the recordings and playlist
Clear the rights first
Use recordings you own or are properly licensed to broadcast, including music, images and other third-party material. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions place responsibility for having the necessary rights on the provider. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a match can cause a temporary replacement feed, interruption or termination. Even a license may not prevent a Content ID interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. See Copyright issues with live streams.
Build a useful sequence
- Arrange experiments and lessons so a viewer arriving at any point can follow the subject without needing to have seen the previous item.
- Check that narration is audible, transitions are intentional, aspect ratios are consistent enough for viewing, and titles and captions accurately describe each lesson.
- Present demonstrations involving heat, electricity, projectiles, chemicals or pressure responsibly. Safety depends on the specific experiment; consult appropriate lab safety guidance rather than improvising instructions.
- Keep original master files separately. The playlist is the transmission source, not your only copy.
Connect an encoder and start the broadcast
YouTube does not require one particular encoder application for this workflow. Choose one that can play your playlist reliably and send video to YouTube, then test the exact sequence before launch. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to create or schedule a stream and enter its server URL and stream key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a live stream or schedule one if you want a start time and a chance to promote the event.
- Copy the stream connection details. In the stream setup, obtain the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in a screen recording. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure the encoder. Select the playlist or media sequence, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key, and configure video and audio to match the source and the current YouTube settings for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Send the feed and preview it. Start transmission from the encoder, then confirm that Live Control Room receives the signal and that picture and sound are correct. For a scheduled stream, use the preview before choosing to go live.
- Start the broadcast in Live Control Room. Sending an encoder feed and starting the public broadcast are separate actions; verify the broadcast status rather than assuming that an incoming signal is already public.
- Watch the stream after launch. Confirm that playback advances between lessons and that audio, captions and transitions remain as expected.
There is no single bitrate or encoder configuration established for every recording and frame rate. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the stream’s resolution and frame rate, and test under the actual upload connection. Do not choose a bitrate that the available upstream bandwidth cannot sustain.
Plan for continuity and recovery
A 24/7 feed depends on the whole chain: source files, playlist playback, encoder, power and internet connection. A local setup gives you direct control but means the playback machine and connection must remain available. Treat the following as operational requirements, not as guarantees of uninterrupted service:

- Run the full playlist before launch, including its end-to-start transition and any long files.
- Keep source recordings accessible if the playback application or machine needs restarting.
- Monitor the incoming signal and playback, and document how to restart the encoder and resume or restart the broadcast after a failure.
- Consider power, cooling and network reliability for any machine expected to run continuously.
- Check the broadcast after a restart: an encoder feed can resume without necessarily restoring the public broadcast in the way you intended.
YouTube’s API documentation describes a 24/7 broadcast use case, but the platform documentation does not make a specific consumer computer or encoder configuration an uptime guarantee. Test the actual production chain and decide how you will respond to failures.
Keep a reliable archive and set replay expectations
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but its archive guidance warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Keep a local recording and make separate uploads of complete lessons when replay matters; do not rely on the 24/7 live page to preserve every hour.

Viewers may be able to pause or rewind during a live stream using DVR, but availability and rewind range are limited for very long streams. Check the current stream settings if DVR is important to your audience, and provide individual lesson uploads for reliable access to specific experiments.

Understand monetization and educational value
YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams. Its channel monetization policies require original, authentic content with viewer value; highly repetitive or mass-produced programming may be ineligible. A playlist that simply repeats the same material should not be assumed to qualify. YouTube determines eligibility during its review, so monetization is not guaranteed.
