You can keep a YouTube channel live with children’s stories by preparing rights-cleared story material, sending a continuous program through a software or hardware encoder, and monitoring the stream. YouTube requires an eligible channel and a stable connection; keeping the stream live is separate from keeping a complete replay. For a genuinely unattended 24/7 broadcast, a cloud service can run the uploaded program without leaving a home computer on.
1. Confirm the rights to every part of each story
“Public domain” applies to particular works, editions, and jurisdictions—not automatically to every item associated with an old story. Check the precise text and any translation, illustrations, narration recording, music, sound effects, and title artwork you plan to use. A story’s age, availability online, or presence in a digital library does not by itself establish that every version is free to reuse.

- Keep an asset-by-asset record. Note the creator, edition or recording, source, applicable license or public-domain basis, jurisdiction, and any conditions. Keep copies of the relevant evidence.
- Check the law where the work was published and where you distribute it. For U.S. framing, the U.S. Copyright Office says works published in the United States before January 1, 1931 are in the public domain because their copyright has expired. Project Gutenberg’s guidance says qualifying works published in 1930 or earlier have no U.S. copyright restrictions as of 2026, subject to its conditions. Neither statement makes a version automatically free of restrictions worldwide.
- Check added material separately. A public-domain story can be paired with a modern translation, illustration, recording, or music track that is still protected. YouTube puts the responsibility for verifying public-domain status on the uploader.

2. Build a continuous program
Prepare the story presentation as a sequence that can play continuously: for example, page images or cleared illustrations paired with narration whose recording rights you have verified. You can assemble one long video or arrange several prepared videos in a playlist, depending on your encoder or hosting method. This is a practical production choice, not a format YouTube requires.

- Use only visuals, narration, music, and other elements you are entitled to stream. Avoid adding modern illustrations or background music unless the license allows this use.
- Check that the order, transitions, audio levels, and ending-to-beginning transition work as intended. A playlist or repeated video should not leave a gap if your goal is continuous programming.
- Retain the source files and rights notes. They make it easier to investigate a claim or replace an item if YouTube identifies it.
3. Make sure the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so set it up and confirm eligibility before scheduling a launch.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s streaming settings.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the broadcast; reset it if it is exposed.
YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. A dedicated hardware encoder is optional; software on a computer can do the encoding. 4. Configure and test the encoder
Choose settings that your encoder and internet connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, supported codecs, constant bitrate, and keyframe intervals. It recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its listed recommended bitrate for 720p at 30 fps is 2 Mbps; that is an example for that output, not a universal setting for every resolution or frame rate.

- In the encoder, select a supported video and audio codec and use a constant bitrate if available.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, within YouTube’s recommendation not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose a resolution and bitrate appropriate to the program and the sustained upload capacity of the connection. Consult YouTube’s current settings table for the exact output you intend to send.
- Start a private or otherwise limited test if appropriate for your channel, then check YouTube Studio’s stream health and the picture and sound from a viewer’s perspective.
- Leave the test running long enough to expose connection drops, overheating, playlist gaps, or other problems before relying on an unattended setup.
Do not set bitrate based only on a short speed test: a connection that fluctuates or is shared with other devices may not sustain the chosen rate. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to send a stable feed. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
5. Decide how the 24/7 stream will stay online
A 24/7 broadcast needs a source and an encoder that remain available, plus a connection that stays up. The main practical choices differ in where the encoding runs and what happens when equipment or connectivity fails.

No single approach is best for every channel: weigh cost, unattended recovery, local backup needs, supported inputs and settings, and how interruptions or session boundaries appear to viewers.

6. Plan for the replay separately
A live stream that remains online is not necessarily preserved as a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining the full program matters, make a local recording or preserve the source videos independently rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive. Check how your channel will present session changes if you choose shorter live sessions instead of one continuous session.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. If it identifies material and that material continues in the broadcast, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed third-party content can require the rights holder to allowlist your channel in Content ID. If a stream is interrupted, check YouTube Studio and review the affected content against your asset-by-asset rights record.
- Keep proof of the source and rights basis for every text, image, recording, and music track.
- If you use licensed material, confirm that the permission covers live streaming and address any Content ID allowlisting requirement with the rights holder.
- Check stream health during initial operation and after any change to the playlist, connection, encoder, or stream key.

8. Troubleshoot common failures

A local setup may involve existing or new computer or encoder equipment, electricity, and a connection capable of sustaining the chosen bitrate. A cloud service changes that trade-off: the uploaded program runs remotely, while pricing, storage limits, supported workflows, and recovery behavior vary by provider. YouTube’s documentation does not establish a universal best choice, so compare the actual operating costs and failure handling for your setup before committing.
