Make sure the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to enable live streaming. Streamers must be at least 16 years old. Clear every track for a YouTube live broadcast
Do not assume that buying, downloading or adding a song to a playlist grants permission to broadcast it. Obtain the rights needed for live streaming from the relevant rights holders. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; when it identifies a match, it may replace the video with a placeholder and warn the creator. If the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream.

A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID. Choose how the stream will stay online
Self-host with an encoder
An encoder sends a prepared audio-and-video program to YouTube. This gives you control over the visual presentation and playlist setup, but the host must stay available: for a local setup, keep the computer powered on and connected to the internet. A power loss, computer failure or connection drop can stop the stream. YouTube identifies encoder-based streaming as an option for broadcasts with overlays and hardware; OBS is one supported encoder. YouTube’s documentation does not prescribe a particular OBS playlist-source configuration or guarantee an automatic restart method.
Use a cloud service
A hosted service can keep uploaded material running without leaving a computer at home switched on. Verify that any service you choose supports the continuous YouTube playlist workflow you need, including what happens after YouTube drops the stream. Build and start a self-hosted stream
- Prepare the program. Assemble audio you have permission to broadcast and decide what visual will accompany it. The encoder needs to send an audio/video program, so plan a suitable visual rather than expecting an audio-only playlist to provide one. The exact playlist-automation steps depend on the software and are not specified by YouTube’s cited creator guidance.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream and select the encoder workflow. Follow the stream details and key instructions displayed in Live Control Room.
- Configure your encoder. In OBS or another encoder, add the prepared audio and visual sources, then enter the connection details and stream key supplied by YouTube. Treat the stream key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives both picture and sound in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast. Check the audio level and that the intended playlist or program is playing.
- Keep the self-hosted setup available. Leave the computer, power and internet connection running for as long as the stream should remain live. The workflow depends on those resources; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.
Use HLS only if your encoder setup calls for it
YouTube supports both RTMP and HLS ingestion. HLS-specific settings below apply only when you choose HLS in Live Control Room and use an HLS-capable encoder; HLS has higher latency than RTMP. OBS is listed by YouTube among encoders that support HLS output.
- Use the HTTPS stream URL provided by Live Control Room.
- Send TS segments that are 1–4 seconds long, with no byte ranges.
- Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Use HTTPS POST/PUT and no encryption beyond HTTPS.
- For stereo audio, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate.

Troubleshoot interruptions and missing audio
- You cannot start a live stream: verify the channel and check for live-stream restrictions within the preceding 90 days. YouTube also requires channel verification and that streamers be at least 16.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast or shows a placeholder: a third-party-content match may have triggered the action. Review the rights for every track and contact the rights holder; licensed music may still require channel allowlisting through Content ID.
- The encoder stops sending: check whether the host computer is still on, has power and remains connected to the internet. A local encoder depends on all three.
- YouTube preview has no sound: check that the encoder is receiving the intended audio source and that its audio level is active before starting the public stream.
- An HLS stream is rejected or delayed: confirm that HLS was selected in Live Control Room and that the encoder follows YouTube’s HLS-specific segment, playlist and transport requirements. HLS latency is higher than RTMP.
