To create a 24/7 YouTube music radio stream with a live waveform, build a scene in OBS Studio, add your cleared music as an audio source, install the OBS Waveform visualizer and connect it to that source, then send the scene to YouTube Live using your stream key. A continuous broadcast also needs a computer and internet connection that stay available, plus someone or something able to respond to interruptions. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a single uninterrupted 24/7 session.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned launch. YouTube’s live streaming help explains eligibility and setup.
- OBS Studio. OBS is free, open-source software for composing scenes, mixing sources, applying audio filters and using plugins. Get it from the OBS project.
- Music and visuals you are authorized to broadcast. Prepare the music and any background image or video in advance. A static image works with an audio-reactive waveform; moving background footage is optional.
- A stable upload connection and an operating computer. OBS sends the stream from your machine, so the machine and its network connection must remain available for the broadcast to continue.
- The Waveform resource for OBS. Its resource page describes waveform, frequency-spectrum graphs and meters, and lists Windows, macOS and Linux support with OBS 27.0.0 as the minimum version on the page accessed in 2026. Check its current compatibility and installation notes before installing: OBS Waveform resource.
Build the music-radio scene in OBS
1. Add and arrange your program sources
Create a scene for the radio stream. Add the music as an audio source, then add a background image or looped video and any title or branding text. Arrange the visual sources so the waveform will be visible without covering essential text. If you use a video background, make sure it loops as intended and does not introduce audio you did not mean to broadcast.

2. Add the waveform visualizer
Install the Waveform resource by following the current instructions on its OBS resource page, then add its visualizer source to the scene. Set the visualizer to listen to the OBS audio source carrying your music. If it is attached to the wrong source, it may remain still or react to unrelated sound. Preview the scene and confirm that the waveform responds when the music plays.

3. Check the audio path
Play a representative section of the program and watch OBS’s audio meters. Confirm that the music reaches the intended output and that the waveform reacts to it. Keep monitoring for clipping, silence, or unwanted desktop and microphone audio; a visualizer moving on screen does not by itself prove that viewers can hear the program.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go live. Create a stream or schedule one, then use the Stream tab in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes entering the server URL and stream key in encoder software.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the YouTube service or configure the server manually, and enter the values shown in Live Control Room. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it in Studio if it is exposed.
- Set the output for your connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate encoding. Its encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use the codec and bitrate that your encoder and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations provide the current figures by resolution, frame rate and codec.
- Test the actual planned scene and audio. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the real stream. Start sending from OBS and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Verify that the music is audible, the waveform responds, motion is present if you plan to use it, and the visual layout is legible.
- Go live and monitor. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then choose Go live when ready. Keep a plan for checking stream health and restarting OBS or the broadcast if something fails.
Example YouTube-recommended video bitrates
The figures below are YouTube ingestion recommendations accessed in 2026. They are not a guarantee of the upload speed or quality available to an individual creator; leave headroom on the actual connection and test under realistic conditions.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps recommended by YouTube | 8 Mbps recommended by YouTube |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps recommended by YouTube | 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps recommended by YouTube | 17 Mbps recommended by YouTube |
Plan for a genuinely continuous 24/7 broadcast
“24/7” is an operating goal, not a continuity guarantee in the cited YouTube guidance. A local OBS setup depends on the computer, OBS, power and internet connection remaining available. Decide who will notice a failure and how they will restore the stream; test that recovery plan before relying on the broadcast.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single stream running continuously for 24 hours or longer will be archived in full. If an archive matters, plan around that limit rather than assuming a continuous 24/7 session will produce a complete recording. YouTube also documents limits of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key; check the current live streaming requirements and limits if you are operating several broadcasts.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including other live broadcasts. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder; if the matched content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A music subscription for personal listening does not automatically establish permission to rebroadcast tracks on a livestream.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

If you have a license for third-party music, YouTube says the rights holder should add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Without that allowlisting, a licensed stream can still be interrupted. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams, and confirm that your permission covers livestreaming and the intended use before you schedule the radio stream.
Choose between local OBS and a cloud service
OBS offers scene control, plugins and customization without a software license fee, but the local computer and connection have to keep doing the work. A dedicated hardware encoder is another option YouTube lists, but it is not required to get started, and no individual hardware model has been evaluated here. YouTube’s encoder guidance also names Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming; that listing alone does not establish whether any particular service fits a music-radio workflow. Compare operating responsibility, compatibility, monitoring and recovery arrangements, and verify a service’s current terms and rights handling before choosing it.
