You can create a continuous YouTube live stream by feeding local video files, in sequence or on repeat, through an encoder to YouTube Live. YouTube does not provide a native control that turns videos already uploaded to your channel into a looping live broadcast: a playlist of public uploads is not the same as a live stream. You need eligible channel access, a continuous playback setup, and a reliable connection—or a cloud service that runs the feed for you.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check YouTube Studio and its live-streaming eligibility guidance before planning a long broadcast: YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Video and audio files you own or are authorized to stream continuously. An existing upload’s availability, or a general music subscription, does not by itself establish permission for a live broadcast.
- An encoder that can play files continuously and send the resulting audio-video feed to YouTube. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started; a suitable computer may be enough. See YouTube’s encoder overview.
- A stable internet connection with sustained upload capacity above your stream’s total bitrate.
In YouTube’s terminology, a broadcast is the viewer-facing live event; a stream is the audio-video feed sent to YouTube. The encoder workflow is documented by YouTube, while arranging local files into a repeating playlist is an implementation choice you make in your playback or encoding setup.

Set up a continuous file playlist
Choose and prepare the files
Use local source files in your encoder or playlist software. Arrange them in the desired order, then enable repeat or loop playback so the sequence continues after the final file. If you want a rotating program, periodically review the playlist rather than assuming that uploaded videos will automatically rotate into a live broadcast.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck transitions in advance. A file ending before the next begins can produce a black screen, silence, or a visible interruption. Verify that each file has an appropriate audio level and that the output format you intend to send is supported by the encoder.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Keep the playback process alive
For a do-it-yourself stream, the device running the encoder and its network connection must remain available throughout the broadcast. Prevent sleep or automatic shutdown, keep the encoder open, and plan how you will notice a failed playback process or dropped connection. A restart plan matters because a playlist set to repeat cannot recover if the computer or encoder itself stops.
Create the YouTube live event and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the live event you want viewers to watch. Confirm that the channel is eligible before scheduling a long run.
- Choose a stream protocol and copy the connection details. For ordinary live content, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the stream key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube documents stream URL/key setup and optional auto-start and auto-stop settings at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Set the encoder output. Match the resolution and frame rate to your material and connection, and use a supported codec and bitrate. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe interval is 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds. Check the current details at YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Start the playlist and send the feed. Start playback in the encoder, then start streaming to YouTube. Depending on the event settings, auto-start can allow the encoder to start the broadcast; it does not make the playlist continuous or supervise the computer.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before sharing widely. Confirm that video and audio arrive, the correct event is live, and playback transitions work. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality. Keep the Live Control Room open or arrange another way to notice stream-health warnings.
Choose bitrate and connection headroom
The encoder’s total stream bitrate must fit within the connection’s sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream bitrate, because upload performance can vary and network disruption can break a live stream. Test upload capacity and choose a quality setting your connection can sustain rather than selecting the highest possible output by default. Guidance is at YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

For example, if your chosen stream output totals 5 Mbps, the 20% headroom recommendation means planning for at least 6 Mbps of sustained upload capacity. This is a planning calculation, not a guarantee that a connection with that measured speed will remain stable. If quality fluctuates, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again.

| Choice | When it makes sense | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Typical encoder-to-YouTube live streams | YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary content; configure compatible output settings and verify the connection in Live Control Room. |
| HLS | When the encoder or stream format specifically calls for HLS | YouTube’s HLS guidance describes higher latency and additional format requirements. Do not select it merely as a substitute for RTMPS without checking encoder compatibility. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance. |
| Existing computer with software encoder | A practical starting point if you already have a suitable machine | The computer, encoder, playlist, and home internet must remain running; YouTube says costly equipment is not necessary to start. |
| Dedicated computer or hardware encoder | When you want a separate device for the stream or have a format-specific production need | It still needs power, internet, setup, and monitoring. No special computer model is required by YouTube. |
Rights, policies, and content planning
Only stream material for which you have the necessary rights, including music, spoken recordings, images, and video footage. A license may have limits on live or continuous streaming; check its terms rather than assuming that permission for a download, personal listening, or an ordinary upload covers a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance also reminds creators to consider audio and video rights: YouTube encoder settings.

A continuous stream also needs editorial planning: decide how often the playlist changes, whether talk segments should repeat, and how you will avoid long silent stretches. A continuous technical feed does not itself establish that a channel complies with YouTube’s rules or that the content qualifies for monetization. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content.
Monitor the stream and recover from failures
YouTube recommends ongoing monitoring. For a long-running stream, decide who or what will notice a problem and what action follows. If the feed stops, check whether the cause is the source file, encoder, computer, network, or YouTube event before restarting. YouTube’s guidance notes that network disruption can interrupt streams; its monitoring and troubleshooting tips are at YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

- Check the Live Control Room for stream health and confirm that the event is still receiving a feed.
- Check local playback and audio if the feed is black, silent, or frozen.
- Check the encoder’s connection and key configuration if it cannot reach YouTube; never post the stream key publicly.
- Check sustained upload performance if the connection is unstable, then reduce output bitrate or resolution if necessary.
- After a restart, verify that the playlist resumes and that the viewer-facing event is live again.
If you record an archive locally, YouTube advises checking the local recording as part of stream quality monitoring. For creators managing streams programmatically, YouTube’s API distinguishes broadcast resources from stream resources and documents a 24/7 feed use case: YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
