You can keep meditation music playing on YouTube Live with FFmpeg by looping a video file, pacing it in real time, and sending it to a YouTube Live ingest URL with a stream key. That makes a continuous stream possible, but it does not make one broadcast session or your computer fault-tolerant: plan for monitoring, recovery, copyright checks, and YouTube’s stream lifecycle.
What you need before starting
The simplest setup is one finished video file containing both the music and its visual. FFmpeg can loop that file and send it to YouTube. Separate audio and visual files offer more flexibility, but require explicit stream selection and careful synchronization.

- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- An audio-and-video file suitable for the stream, or separate audio and visual inputs.
- A working FFmpeg build with the encoders you intend to use.
- Music rights that cover the live stream and, if you plan to keep the replay, the archived recording.
- A computer and network connection that can stay available, plus a plan to monitor and restart the process if it stops.
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option repeats an input indefinitely; -re reads file input at its native rate so it is sent at a pace suitable for a live stream. These options handle looping and pacing, not process supervision, internet outages, or YouTube session restarts.

Check the license for the actual use
Use original music or obtain permission that explicitly covers YouTube live streaming, the territories where you expect the stream to be available, monetization if relevant, and the archived recording. Keep a copy of the license and the rights holder’s contact details. “Royalty-free” describes a licensing arrangement; it does not by itself guarantee that a track is free of claims or interruptions.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. Identified material can lead to interruption or termination, and a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID even when you have a license. An archived live stream can also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends.
Make the loop comfortable to listen to and watch
Listen to the join between the end and beginning of the audio. A clean crossfade or a naturally continuous passage can make repetition less distracting. Choose a visual that you have permission to use; a still or slowly changing scene can keep the visual simple, but test the full stream rather than assuming that an image alone proves the audio path works.

Enable YouTube Live and get the ingest details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room. If live streaming is not enabled on the channel, complete YouTube’s activation steps and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or schedule a stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and other metadata; choose whether the stream should be public, unlisted, or private based on your launch plan.
- In the encoder or stream settings shown in the Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key. Use the exact ingest details YouTube provides for that broadcast.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not share it, put it in a screenshot, or leave a real key in a command-history example. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted transport to its servers. Use the RTMPS server URL shown for your stream when it is available, rather than copying a destination from someone else’s setup.

FFmpeg options apply in order: input options must appear before the input they affect, and output options before the output they affect. In particular, put -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i. Use -re with file input that needs real-time pacing; FFmpeg cautions against applying a low read rate to actual capture devices or live inputs, where it can cause packet loss.

Use this illustrative FFmpeg command
This is a starting template, not a tested turnkey production command. Replace the input filename and the ingest placeholders with your own values. Do not publish a real stream key. Check the resolution, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, codecs, and endpoint against the current YouTube settings for your chosen stream profile and your local FFmpeg build.

Confirm your FFmpeg build includes the encoder and that the output matches your selected YouTube profile.-r 30requests 30 frames per second.-g 60requests a 60-frame GOP, which at 30 fps corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.-c:a aac -b:a 128kselects AAC audio at 128 Kbps. YouTube’s current settings guidance lists 128 Kbps stereo AAC and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate; check the full requirements for your selected format and stream type.-f flvspecifies the output container used in this RTMP-style ingest example. The destination must be YouTube’s server URL and your stream key, in the exact format YouTube provides.
YouTube’s current live encoding settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. The command uses H.264 and AAC as an example; do not assume every encoder, pixel format, resolution, or bitrate is right for every channel or FFmpeg build. Set a constant bitrate (CBR) as YouTube recommends, and consult YouTube’s current ingest settings for the bitrate appropriate to your resolution and stream type rather than guessing one.

Test the stream before making it public
- Start the broadcast in the Live Control Room and launch FFmpeg with the private or unlisted visibility you chose for testing.
- Wait for YouTube to show an incoming signal and inspect its stream-health status.
- Watch and listen to a representative section. Check that the image appears, the audio is audible without clipping, and the loop boundary does not create a disruptive silence, click, or visual jump.
- Check the stream at the resolution and frame rate you intend to use. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the eventual stream, so do not validate only a silent still if the actual broadcast includes music or motion.
- After a successful test, confirm the public metadata and visibility before launching the audience-facing stream.
Keep the stream running and plan for recovery
A looped input is not an always-recovering service. If FFmpeg exits, the computer sleeps, power fails, or the network drops, the stream can stop. For a local setup, disable sleep for the duration of operation, keep the machine and network available, monitor the FFmpeg process and YouTube stream health, and arrange an alert or human check if the feed disappears.

The exact service configuration depends on the operating system and host; a restart policy can relaunch a process, but it does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted delivery or resolve a YouTube-side session end. Test recovery deliberately before relying on it.

Do not treat a single broadcast as guaranteed to run forever. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance does not establish that one session can run indefinitely. Plan how you will notice a stopped broadcast, create or resume a session in the Live Control Room when needed, and reconnect FFmpeg using the current ingest details.
Common FFmpeg and YouTube Live problems
