Test the stream before launch and plan for the computer, internet connection, copyright checks, and archive limits that can interrupt or complicate an always-on channel.
What you need before you start
Check YouTube eligibility before building the broadcast. The channel must be verified, live streaming must be enabled, and it must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube currently says a person must be at least 16 to livestream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream.
- An animation and audio files in formats supported by your encoder.
- Rights covering the music recordings, compositions, animation, fonts, and any other material used.
- An encoder and an internet connection capable of maintaining the chosen stream settings.
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for obtaining necessary rights on the content provider. Keep permission records and verify that the license covers livestreaming, the territories where viewers may watch, and any recording or archive use you intend. If a music rights owner uses Content ID, ask whether the channel must be allowlisted before going live.

Do not assume a license alone prevents an interruption: YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches, and licensed music can still trigger a block if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. See YouTube’s livestream terms and live-stream copyright guidance.

Make a scene that loops cleanly
Create the pixel-art animation
Design a scene that reads well at the resolution you plan to stream: for example, a room, window, desk, or night landscape with subtle movement. Choose the dimensions, frame rate, and export settings to suit your project and encoder; the OBS documentation confirms supported formats and looping, but does not prescribe pixel-art dimensions or frame rate.
Make the animation’s ending blend naturally into its beginning. Check the loop locally for a visible jump, flash, or pause. If the scene includes text, keep it legible at the size it will appear in the YouTube player and avoid placing essential details where player controls may cover them.
Add the media in OBS
- Open OBS and create a scene for the radio broadcast.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, add a Media Source and select the local animation file.
- Enable the Media Source’s Loop option so playback restarts when the file ends.
- Add any title or status overlays as separate sources, then arrange and preview them.
- Confirm that the intended audio is audible in the OBS mixer and that no unwanted desktop or microphone audio is being sent.
OBS Media Source lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM as supported video formats, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio formats. Consult OBS Media Sources documentation for current behavior and settings.

Choose music that is cleared for a livestream
Use music you made yourself or music whose rights expressly allow the planned YouTube livestream. A lo-fi track may involve separate rights in the composition and the sound recording, so confirm that permission covers all relevant rights holders and your planned use. Keep license documents and any required attribution details accessible.
YouTube Creator Music is not a shortcut for licensing a live radio stream: its usage terms limit licensed and revenue-sharing tracks to long-form videos, not livestreams or Shorts. For other licensed music, confirm the rights owner’s Content ID and allowlisting requirements before launch. YouTube’s live copyright guidance explains that a match can replace the stream with a placeholder and continued use can interrupt or terminate it.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream and choose the YouTube streaming service or the applicable custom server option.
- Enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in the scene, share it, or publish a screen capture that reveals it.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview. Check that the picture, audio, and stream status are correct before making the broadcast public or telling viewers it is live.

Set encoder quality and test the stream
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for supported codecs and parameters. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then verify that your sustained upload capacity can support it with headroom; do not select a bitrate based only on a brief peak in a speed test.

- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health, OBS dropped frames, audio level, and whether the media source continues to loop.
- Open the watch page on the devices and connections your audience is likely to use; confirm playback and sound.
- Monitor the live broadcast continuously at launch and arrange a way to notice failures during later hours.
A successful test is a check of the setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. An OBS stream running locally still depends on the computer, power, internet connection, source files, and someone able to respond to faults.
Plan for 24/7 operation and replay archives
Keep the local setup running
For a do-it-yourself broadcast, keep the OBS computer awake, powered, connected to stable internet, and running the right scene and sources. Decide how you will detect a stopped encoder, a disconnected network, or a media source that has failed. A restart plan should include checking the YouTube preview again before relying on the stream being live.

Understand YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single continuous 24-hour broadcast is beyond that condition, so do not promise it will produce one complete replay. If preserving the programming matters, plan a separate recording or archive workflow and test it independently. See the archive note in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Copyright and monetization are separate questions. A channel may have permission to use a track and still need to demonstrate original, valuable work across its videos. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 policy update calls repetitive or mass-produced material “inauthentic content” and says it is ineligible for monetization; reused-content review is channel-wide and separate from copyright review. Make authorship and meaningful original production clear, but no checklist can guarantee approval for a particular channel.
Live-stream ads and fan-funding features also have their own eligibility and configuration conditions for channels in the YouTube Partner Program. Check YouTube’s current program rules rather than assuming that a continuous stream qualifies automatically.
