How to Create a 24/7 YouTube Livestream of a Music Playlist

You can run a music playlist as a continuous YouTube livestream by sending a looping feed from an encoder to the stream key that YouTube Studio gives you. The setup itself is short. What usually stops a 24/7 channel is one of two things: music rights that do not cover live use, or a computer and home connection that cannot stay on for days. This guide covers the full do-it-yourself setup with OBS Studio, the encoder settings that matter, the YouTube rules that can interrupt a broadcast, and how to fix the common failures.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. If this is the channel’s first livestream, enablement can take up to 24 hours, so start this step before the day you plan to broadcast.
  • An encoder. YouTube accepts streaming software, and this guide uses OBS Studio, which is free. YouTube also accepts standalone hardware encoders, but a hardware unit is optional for a music-only broadcast.
  • A computer that can run the encoder continuously, with sleep and automatic restarts turned off (see the section on keeping it running).
  • A steady upload connection. Upload speed matters more than download speed for a livestream.
  • Music, and any artwork you show behind it, whose rights cover live use. This is covered in the next section and is the step most likely to cost you the broadcast.

Get the music rights right first

YouTube’s Live Stream Terms and Conditions make the creator responsible for rights. The exact wording is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

“You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practice, that means four things:

  • A consumer music subscription is not a livestream licence. Being able to play a song in a personal app does not give you the right to broadcast it to an audience.
  • A licence can still fail in practice. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it finds a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image. If the content remains, the live stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. YouTube also says a stream can be interrupted even with a licence if your channel is not on the content owner’s allowlist. Its advice is to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
  • Creator Music tracks cannot be used in livestreams. YouTube’s guidance limits those tracks to long-form videos, not live streams or Shorts.
  • Artwork counts as content. If you put a still image behind the playlist and did not create it yourself, the image needs the same clearance. Work through the copyright safety checklist before you go live.

No specific music licensing provider can be recommended here. Provider terms for continuous livestreams, the territories they cover, the rights types included, and the allowlisting process all have to be checked directly with the provider before you rely on them.

Set up the broadcast

Enable livestreaming on the channel

In YouTube Studio, confirm that livestreaming is enabled for the channel. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so this is the step to finish first.

Create the stream in Live Control Room

In YouTube Studio, open Create, then choose Go live. In Live Control Room, create a new stream or select an existing one. Reusing a saved stream setting keeps the same stream key for future broadcasts, so you do not have to paste a new key every time.

Build the playlist in OBS Studio

  1. Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, click + and add a Media Source. In its properties, tick Local File, add your tracks to the playlist, and tick Loop so the list starts again after the last track. Also tick Restart playback when source becomes active so the playlist starts cleanly after a scene change.
  3. If you want visuals, add an Image source with your artwork and place it under or behind the Media Source. Use a 1920 by 1080 image to match the canvas.
  4. Play the scene in OBS for a few minutes before going live to check that the tracks advance and the audio is audible in the mixer.

Set the encoder values

These values are YouTube’s published recommended ranges at the time of writing. Check YouTube Help’s encoder settings page before a long run, because the recommendations can change.

Setting Where in OBS Value to use Why it matters
Canvas and output resolution Settings, Video 1920 by 1080 (1080p) A steady 1080p feed is the common default; a 720p output needs less upload.
Frame rate Settings, Video 30 FPS A music playlist with a still or slow visual gains little from 60 FPS and needs more upload.
Video encoder Settings, Output, Streaming x264 (software) or a hardware encoder your graphics card supports Hardware encoding lowers CPU load for a machine that runs all day.
Rate control Settings, Output, Streaming CBR (constant bitrate) A constant bitrate keeps the upload steady, which matters more than peak quality for an unattended stream.
Video bitrate Settings, Output, Streaming 4,500 to 9,000 kbps for 1080p at 30 FPS; start near the bottom Above your steady upload speed, the feed buffers and drops frames. Keep a margin below your measured upload.
Keyframe interval Settings, Output, Streaming 2 seconds Keyframes let YouTube recover the picture quickly after a dropout.
Audio Settings, Audio (sample rate); Settings, Output, Streaming (audio bitrate) 48 kHz sample rate; AAC at 128 to 320 kbps, stereo Music is the main content, so audio bitrate deserves more than a default.

Connect the stream key

  1. In OBS, open Settings, then Stream.
  2. Either set Service to YouTube, choose the primary YouTube ingest server, and paste the stream key; or set the service to Custom and paste the server URL and stream key exactly as shown in Live Control Room.
  3. Treat the stream key as a password. Anyone with it can send a feed to your channel. Do not paste it into screenshots or shared documents. If it leaks, reset the key in YouTube Studio (channel owners and managers can do this), then paste the new key into OBS.

Start the broadcast and go live

  1. In the OBS main window, click Start Streaming.
  2. Watch the stream preview in Live Control Room until the feed appears.
  3. Complete the go-live step in Live Control Room when prompted.
  4. Check sound and picture on a second device, not only in OBS.

To end the broadcast, click Stop Streaming in OBS, then end the stream in YouTube Studio.

Keeping it running for days

Stop the computer from sleeping

On Windows, open Settings, then System, then Power and battery. Set screen and sleep timers to Never while plugged in. Turn off or schedule automatic restarts for updates, and keep OBS from closing when you log out or lock the session.

Watch the connection and the machine

The broadcast is only as available as the computer, the encoder and your home connection. Enable OBS’s automatic reconnect option, check the stream at intervals, and expect a manual restart after a power cut or a router reboot. A livestream run from your own machine has no automatic recovery built in, so the only protection is your own monitoring.

The 24-hour archive question

YouTube documents automatic archiving for encoder streams under 12 hours. Its guidance does not promise that a stream running 24 hours will be archived as one video. If you need a permanent copy, keep the tracks and artwork you used on disk and treat any replay from YouTube as a bonus, not a guarantee.

Cost notes

A home computer that runs around the clock draws power all day and ties the broadcast to your home internet and hardware. Those running costs and the wear on the machine should go into any comparison. The cloud vs PC cost calculator on StreamNeo’s site lets you compare those costs against a cloud setup with your own figures.
