To run a true crime podcast archive as a continuous YouTube Live feed, prepare a rights-cleared episode playlist, create a YouTube broadcast, connect an encoder with the broadcast’s stream key, and monitor the stream in YouTube Studio. Plan the archive separately: a long-running live broadcast is not a reliable substitute for individual episode videos, and YouTube’s published guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived while longer streams should be recorded separately for manual upload.
Choose how the archive should work
YouTube treats a broadcast as a distinct video resource bound to a stream. The stream is the audio/video signal supplied by your encoder; the broadcast is the event viewers watch. Google’s API overview describes both a continuing 24/7 broadcast and separate broadcasts that can use the same stream. An omitted scheduled end time is treated as continuing indefinitely, but that is a scheduling behavior—not a promise that the encoder, network, or platform will stay uninterrupted. Google’s LiveBroadcasts API reference and broadcasts-and-streams overview explain the model.

| Format | Best fit | Archive and operating trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One continuous broadcast | A radio-like channel where episodes play in rotation and a single live destination is the priority. | Episode boundaries are less discoverable as separate videos. Plan independent recordings and uploads; a very long broadcast should not be treated as a complete, convenient archive. |
| Separate scheduled broadcasts | Episodes should have their own titles, descriptions, and live destinations. | Requires more scheduling and handoffs. Google documents that multiple broadcasts can be bound to one stream; ending a separate broadcast need not end an ongoing 24/7 broadcast. |
Neither format is established by YouTube’s API documentation as better for search, audience growth, or revenue. Choose based on whether you value uninterrupted listening or separate, navigable episode pages more.
Clear rights for every part of the feed
Before scheduling, check more than ownership of the podcast recording. Confirm permission for theme music, beds, clips, artwork, guest contributions, and any other material in each episode. Keep written licenses or permissions accessible to the people operating the channel.

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. It may replace a live stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license alone may not prevent interruption: ask a third-party rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before launch. Archived streams can also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Copyright claims, live interruptions, and monetization review are separate issues. A stream being made from your own podcast does not establish that it will be monetized. YouTube’s surfaced monetization-policy guidance applies reused-content rules to live streams, while compliance with that policy does not remove separate copyright requirements. Review YouTube channel monetization policies and your channel’s eligibility before relying on ad revenue.

Prepare the episodes and archive workflow
Build a playback-ready rotation
- Arrange episodes in a deliberate order and decide whether to repeat the full rotation or update it on a schedule.
- Use a legible visual that identifies the show and, where practical, the current episode or rotation. Use artwork you have permission to display. These are listener-friendly choices, not a YouTube-mandated podcast format.
- Test the complete playback sequence, including transitions and the point where the playlist loops, before announcing the feed.
Keep separate episode masters
Maintain local recordings or exported masters of the episodes and preserve a clean copy of any continuous production if useful. YouTube’s official production guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and advises recording streams longer than that separately for manual upload. Because the publication date of that guide is not displayed, recheck current behavior in YouTube Studio rather than relying on a long broadcast to produce a complete archive. YouTube’s live production guidance covers live-stream recording and archiving.
The LiveBroadcasts API reference says both enableDvr and enableArchive must be true for immediate playback after the broadcast ends; without DVR, archived playback may be delayed by around a day. Check the available settings for the broadcast you create and confirm what viewers can replay after a test ends. The API settings are documented at LiveBroadcasts.

Set up and start the YouTube Live feed
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a live stream or schedule one. Set a clear title and description, choose visibility, and decide whether you are setting up one continuous broadcast or separate episode broadcasts. YouTube’s live-stream settings guide explains the controls.
- Copy the stream key into your encoder. The encoder sends the prepared episode audio/video signal to YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the feed. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Load the playlist or prepared feed. Confirm that the episodes, visual, audio levels, and loop behavior are correct. Start the encoder and wait for YouTube to receive a preview.
- Check the preview and stream health. Verify that both picture and sound arrive as expected, and check the title, visibility, and selected broadcast before going live.
- Start the broadcast from YouTube Studio. Starting the encoder sends the signal; the YouTube broadcast is the viewer-facing event. Confirm it is live in the Live Control Room rather than assuming an encoder connection alone has made the video public.
- Monitor the operation. Check stream health, copyright notices, and interruptions. Keep a restart procedure and a separate source recording available. Test recovery before treating the setup as an always-on channel.
Keep the feed running and recover cleanly
A 24/7 format is an operating goal, not a guarantee of zero downtime. The encoder, internet connection, YouTube account, or platform may fail or require attention. Decide who checks the Live Control Room, how quickly the source can be restarted, and how the operator will verify that the broadcast has resumed. If YouTube flags third-party material, address the rights issue rather than repeatedly restarting the same un-cleared feed.
- No preview reaches YouTube: Confirm the encoder is using the correct stream key and is sending the intended source. If the key may have been exposed or changed, reset or recopy it and update the encoder.
- The encoder is connected but viewers cannot watch: Check that the broadcast itself has been started in YouTube Studio, and verify visibility and the selected broadcast.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: Check Studio for a copyright warning or other restriction. Review the affected episode and any third-party material; if it is licensed, ask the rightsholder about Content ID allowlisting.
- The ended stream is not immediately replayable: Check the broadcast’s DVR and archive settings. Immediate playback after ending requires both settings according to the API reference; without DVR, playback may be delayed around a day.
- The long-running stream does not provide a usable full archive: Use your separately recorded masters or production recording to upload a complete archive, and verify current Studio behavior instead of assuming a broadcast exceeding 12 hours will be automatically archived in full.
