First confirm your channel is allowed to stream, then test the video and audio before announcing the broadcast. Plan separately for replays: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Before you build the stream: confirm access and prepare lessons
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check access well before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Prepare recordings and any supporting visuals, captions, or on-screen prompts. Arrange them in a sequence that still makes sense to someone who joins midway through the day. Use lessons and other material you created or have the rights to use; that includes readings, worksheets, music, sound effects, and visuals.
Choose how to keep the lessons playing
Local encoder: OBS on a computer
OBS is a no-charge software encoder listed in YouTube’s encoder directory. It gives you direct control over scenes and sources, but the computer, power, and internet connection must remain available while it is streaming. You will also need a plan to notice and address interruptions.

Hosted continuous playout
YouTube’s verified-encoder directory also lists hosted services described for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. This option avoids relying on a local computer for playback. Before choosing a service, compare its price, supported media formats, recovery behavior, monitoring, and handling of your stream key. The directory establishes that these services exist; it does not establish that one is more reliable or better value than another.
Set up a local 24/7 stream with OBS
- Install and configure OBS. Add the lesson video and any other sources you need to a scene. Set up the audio path so the lesson’s spoken track reaches the stream. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends using the Auto-Configuration Wizard, checking the audio meters, and confirming output settings.
- Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live and create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup steps.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Start and confirm the broadcast. Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, check the Live Control Room preview and follow its prompts to go live.
- Test before promoting it. Watch the stream on YouTube and check that video plays, speech is intelligible, the intended audio source is active, and on-screen text is readable. OBS recommends a few-minute test before a first broadcast rather than starting untested.
- Plan for interruptions. Decide who will notice a stopped broadcast and how it will be restarted. A local setup depends on the computer and connection staying available; documentation alone cannot guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
Choose how viewers will get replays
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For more predictable replay access, schedule separate sessions shorter than 12 hours or record the lessons locally as a backup. Splitting the broadcast creates separate sessions and watch pages, so tell viewers how the schedule works. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Make a lesson stream useful and eligible for monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. Build a distinctive lesson sequence with original educational value rather than repeatedly looping generic or mass-produced material. YouTube says reused content must add significant original commentary, modification, or educational or entertainment value; permission to use material alone does not guarantee that it qualifies for monetization. Its policy page’s July 15, 2025 clarification says repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its inauthentic-content policy. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Copyright and monetization are separate considerations: having permission to use a recording does not by itself resolve whether a repetitive stream meets monetization requirements. Check rights for every component of your lessons, and make the teaching, sequence, and presentation meaningfully your own.
