How to Create a 24/7 Lo-Fi Radio Station on YouTube From Local Audio Files

You can turn audio files on your computer into a continuous YouTube Live radio stream by playing them through an encoder alongside a static image or looping visual. First confirm you have livestream and archive rights for every track; then create a YouTube stream, configure the encoder, test the feed, and plan how you will keep the computer and connection running. For a setup that does not depend on a computer staying on at home, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube.

Before you build the station: confirm eligibility and music rights

Check that your channel can go live

YouTube says livestreaming requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Its general getting-started guidance also says creators must be at least 16. Check access in YouTube Studio before preparing a long-running setup, because eligibility and restrictions can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance.

Make a track-by-track rights inventory

A file being stored locally—or having purchased or downloaded it—does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. Before adding music, record each track’s rights holder, permitted territories, livestream and archive permissions, attribution requirements, and whether the owner must allowlist your channel through Content ID. A general “royalty-free” label is not enough unless its terms cover this use.

YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” The exact permissions needed depend on your tracks, agreements, territories, and intended use.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party-content matches. A placeholder can replace a stream, and unresolved matches can interrupt or terminate it. Even if you have a license, YouTube advises asking the owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID; a license alone does not ensure uninterrupted streaming. Archived broadcasts may also receive Content ID claims. An active copyright strike or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast can lead to live-streaming restrictions. Read YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions and its live-stream copyright guidance.

Choose a local playback and encoder setup

For a radio-style broadcast built from local files, use an encoder workflow rather than a webcam-only route. The encoder sends the audio and video feed to YouTube; your playback application supplies the playlist, while an image, animation, or scene supplies the visual layer. YouTube describes encoder software and professional hardware encoders but does not prescribe a specific local music player or scene design. Choose software or hardware you can operate and monitor reliably.

Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen USB-C Audio Interface | 1 XLR Mic Preamp, 1 Hi-Z Instrument Input, 24-Bit/192kHz, 120dB Dynamic Range, Air Modes, PC/Mac/iPad Compatible
  • The new generation of the songwriter's interface: Plug in your mic and guitar and let Scarlett Solo 4th Gen bring big studio sound to wherever you make music
  • Studio-quality sound: With a huge 120dB dynamic range, the newest generation of Scarlett uses the same converters as Focusrite’s flagship interfaces, found in the world's biggest studios

  • Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools

Prepare a playback queue or playlist that can repeat without stopping. Add a static cover image or a simple visual loop as the video source. Route the playback application’s sound to the encoder’s audio input, and check that the visual source stays active. These are setup choices rather than a YouTube-prescribed scene configuration.

Create a YouTube Live event and connect the encoder

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and choose the visibility appropriate for your test or public launch.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube supplies these in the encoder connection details. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream.
  3. Enter the connection details in the encoder. Select the YouTube/RTMPS destination if your encoder offers it, then paste the stream URL and key into the matching fields.
  4. Set the scene and sources. Add the visual source and the audio routed from your local playlist. Start playback and confirm the encoder’s audio meter responds.
  5. Start sending the feed, then check the preview. YouTube creates the watch page when the encoder starts sending content. Confirm that the Live Control Room preview shows the intended visual and audio before sharing the page.

Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Live Control Room interface and connection workflow; labels can change.

Set audio, video, and network settings

For stereo audio, YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance lists AAC or MP3, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps audio bitrate. Use a tested profile and verify the result in the preview and on another device. The video bitrate is chiefly a bandwidth and encoding-load choice; a static image does not by itself require a high resolution.

H.264 video profile YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube Help’s encoder-settings page, accessed in 2026; they are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection or encoder can sustain a stream. Start with 720p30 if that is sufficient for your visual, then test before increasing resolution. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, no greater than four seconds. Its streaming tips recommend keeping 20% upload headroom. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.

Test the station before announcing it

  1. Run a private or unlisted test stream.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators for errors.
  3. Listen from a separate device, preferably on a different connection, and confirm the audio is clear and synchronized with the visual.
  4. Check playback on mobile as well as desktop, and make sure the playlist advances and loops as intended.
  5. Watch the encoder and network for instability over a meaningful test period; a short successful preview does not establish that a setup will run indefinitely.

YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. Its guidance is at YouTube’s streaming tips.

Keep a home-run stream operating around the clock

A local-file stream is only as continuous as the whole chain: computer, playback application, encoder, power, and internet upload. A sleep setting, crash, lost connection, or stopped playlist can interrupt the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance recommends monitoring quality but does not promise failover for a home setup.

  • Leave upload headroom and use a stable network connection. A speed test is only a snapshot; monitor the live encoder’s health.

Understand the replay limit for a 24-hour broadcast

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise a complete archive for one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. If a durable replay matters, check YouTube’s current archive behavior before launch and plan recordings or shorter sessions only after confirming how they affect the continuous public watch experience. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Instead of leaving your computer and home connection running, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home while the cloud stream runs.
  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use local audio files in a YouTube livestream?

Yes, if you have the rights required for livestreaming and any resulting archive, and meet any Content ID allowlisting requirements.

Does YouTube automatically save a full 24-hour livestream?

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish that a single 24-hour stream will be archived in full.
