To make a Minecraft banner, craft six wool blocks of one color with one stick. To decorate it, use a loom: place the banner in the first slot, a dye in the second, and—when required—a pattern item in the third. Every added layer consumes one dye. You can remove the last layer with a water-filled cauldron, reset the banner to plain white with bleach where that feature is available, or duplicate a finished design with another blank banner of the same base color.

What you need for a Minecraft banner
Banner work is easiest when you separate it into three jobs: making the blank banner, building a loom, and applying patterns. The crafting table makes the banner itself; the loom is the normal tool for adding colored layers.

Wool colors cannot be mixed when you make the base. Six white wool blocks make a white banner, six red wool blocks make a red banner, and so on; a row containing different wool colors will not produce a banner.

- Collect six wool blocks of one matching color.
- Collect one stick.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the six wool blocks in the top two rows of the 3×3 grid.
- Place the stick in the center slot of the bottom row.
- Take the banner from the result slot.
The wool determines the banner’s base color. That choice is permanent for normal crafting: later loom work can add colored layers, but it does not change the original base color.
How to craft and use a loom
Loom recipe
A loom requires two wooden planks and two strings. The planks may be from any wood type. Put the two strings side by side in one row of the crafting grid and the two planks directly beneath them.
Open the loom
- Place the loom and open it.
- Put your banner in the first slot.
- Put one dye in the second slot.
- If the design calls for a special pattern item, put that item in the third slot.
- Choose a pattern from the loom’s available previews.
- Move the result into your inventory.
The loom shows the selected layer before you take the result, so inspect the preview rather than committing a guess. Each layer costs exactly one dye. A design made from four layers therefore consumes four dyes, even if the same dye color is used repeatedly.

The pattern item in the third slot is not consumed. It unlocks its associated design while the dye pays for the layer.
Banner patterns and the items that unlock them
Most loom shapes use only a banner and a dye. Ten named patterns require a separate item in the loom’s third slot. The currently documented item associations are below; availability and acquisition can differ between Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, and game versions, so check the recipe book and your edition’s current in-game data when a pattern does not appear.

Third-party guides also describe six pattern items that can be crafted at a crafting table from one paper plus a particular material. Because the individual material recipes and their edition behavior are not established consistently here, use the recipe book or the current Minecraft Wiki entry for the exact combination rather than relying on an old guide.

Choosing dyes and planning layers
The dye in the loom controls the color of the new layer. The base banner and every subsequent layer remain separate: a later layer can cover part of an earlier one, but it does not recolor the wool underneath.
Commonly cited examples include dandelion for yellow dye, poppy for red dye, azure bluet for white dye, and lapis lazuli for blue dye. Dye recipes and item names can vary with updates or edition details, so confirm the current recipe in your recipe book before gathering a large supply.
Plan from the background forward
- Choose the wool color that will remain visible as the background.
- Add the broadest field or stripe first.
- Add narrower stripes, crosses, gradients, or corners over that field.
- Finish with a border, charge, or other small emblem.
- Stop when the preview is correct; every accepted layer permanently adds to the banner until you remove it.
Because the loom applies one layer at a time, the same ingredients can produce different results when the order changes. Keep a written sequence or screenshot if you are building a design that must be reproduced across several banners.
How many patterns can one banner hold?
Published guides disagree about the layer cap. One account describes six additional layers in Java Edition and 16 in Bedrock Edition; another gives six without specifying an edition. Treat the limit as version-dependent rather than universal. If the loom stops offering new layers, the banner has reached the cap for that edition or release, and the practical solution is to start with a fresh banner and simplify the sequence.

Since these figures conflict, do not promise a specific maximum for every platform. The loom’s available result and your edition’s documentation are the authoritative check for your world.

How to remove a banner pattern or start over
Remove one layer with a water-filled cauldron
- Fill a cauldron with water.
- Use the decorated banner on the water-filled cauldron.
- The most recently applied pattern layer is removed.
- Repeat the operation to remove additional layers one at a time.
This is the precise fix when the base color and most of the design are correct but the last layer is wrong. It does not let you select an older layer directly; remove layers in reverse order.
Reset the entire banner with bleach
Bleach strips the banner back to its white base and removes all pattern layers. This is a full reset, not an undo for one mistake. The bleach behavior is edition- or feature-dependent, so use it only when the bleach option is available in your game. A reset discards the original base color as well as every design layer.
If neither option is available, craft a new banner. Do not add more layers to hide a mistake unless you are certain the resulting order and layer count will still fit your design.

How to copy a finished banner
- Keep the completed banner intact.
- Craft or obtain a blank banner made with wool of the same base color.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the finished banner and the matching blank banner together.
- Take the duplicate from the result slot.
The copied banner keeps the design and does not require another dye for each layer. The blank banner must match the finished banner’s base color; a blank banner made from a different wool color will not duplicate it. Copying is the efficient way to outfit several shields, walls, maps, or rooms with one design.

Do not assume that a tutorial written for one edition describes the other exactly. The evidence available for banner mechanics contains three unresolved edition questions:
- The maximum number of additional layers is reported as six in Java and 16 in Bedrock by one source, while another source gives six without naming an edition.
- One reference labels Bordure Indented as Bedrock-only, while another says the pattern set is identical and that only crafting-station availability differs.
- Older versions and one Bedrock reference describe crafting-table pattern methods, whereas another guide says the loom replaced them.
For a current world, open the loom and recipe book in the edition you are actually playing. If a pattern, recipe, or layer is missing, treat that as an edition or version difference rather than a crafting error. Legacy tutorials may still be accurate for the release they describe but not for a current installation.

Troubleshooting banner crafting
The banner recipe produces nothing
- Check that all six wool blocks are present.
- Check that every wool block is the same color; mixed colors fail.
- Check that the stick is in the bottom-center position.
- Use a crafting table rather than attempting the recipe in a smaller grid.
The loom does not show the pattern you want
- Confirm that the banner is in the first slot and a dye is in the second.
- For one of the ten special patterns, put the correct non-consumed pattern item in the third slot.
- Check whether the pattern or item is available in your edition and current version.
- Make sure the banner has not reached your edition’s layer cap.
The finished color looks wrong
- Remember that each layer is painted over the existing design; the order matters.
- Use a water-filled cauldron to remove the most recent layer and try again.
- If the base wool color itself is wrong, use bleach where available or begin with a new banner; the loom cannot change the base color.
The banner will not copy
- Use exactly one finished banner and one blank banner.
- Verify that both banners have the same base wool color.
- Perform the copy in a crafting table.
A practical banner-building workflow
For a reliable build, gather duplicate materials before you start. Make the base banner and loom first, then assemble the dyes and any special pattern item. Apply layers from large shapes to small details, checking the preview after every click. Keep a spare blank banner of the same base color if you expect to copy the result, because the duplicate requires that matching blank. If a late layer spoils the design, remove it with the water-filled cauldron instead of rebuilding the entire banner.
When the design is finalized, copy it at the crafting table for additional banners. This concentrates dye and pattern-item costs in the original while giving every duplicate the same layered appearance.
