If an AI search answer shows the wrong address, phone number, opening hours, service, ownership detail or business description, do not try to correct the generated sentence alone. Find the source record that supplied the fact, correct that record, then send a specific, evidence-backed report through the platform that still displays the error. The update may take time and one correction will not automatically synchronize every search system.
Why an AI search answer can be wrong
AI search systems assemble answers from several layers of information. A response may reflect your official website, an owner-managed business profile, a platform knowledge panel, licensed data, user reports or another page that the system considers authoritative. The generated wording is often the final layer, not the original record.

That distinction determines what you should do. If your website says the wrong thing, edit the website. If a local listing contains an old phone number, update the listing you control. If a knowledge panel repeats a description from a publisher, ask that publisher to correct its page and then report the remaining error to the platform. A report aimed at the wrong layer can leave the underlying fact unchanged.

Use this correction workflow
- Capture the exact error. Save the full answer, the date and time, the platform, the prompt, the location or market shown to the system, and every citation or link displayed with the answer.
- Trace the fact to its source. Open each cited page and search for the incorrect name, address, service, telephone number, hours, ownership statement or description. Check your own website and profiles even when the answer does not display a citation.
- Fix the source record first. Correct pages and profiles that your business controls, keeping the same current facts everywhere.
- Report the remaining platform error. Use the correction route for the specific product: Google Business Profile, Google Knowledge Panel feedback, Bing Places, Bing page feedback, or the appropriate personal-data process.
- Keep an evidence log. Record what you changed, when you changed it, which report you submitted and what supporting material you supplied. This prevents contradictory follow-up reports.
Platforms do not promise that a single edit will immediately change every generated answer. A crawler, index, profile system and answer generator can refresh on different schedules, and a platform may choose another source after reviewing your report.
Step 1: Document the wrong answer and its provenance
Save the answer exactly as displayed
Take a screenshot or export the result and copy the text into a dated record. Include the exact query because a system may answer differently when the searcher specifies a city, country, language or service. Note whether the result came from a conversational answer, a local result, a knowledge panel or a conventional search listing.
Record every source shown
AI answers often provide citations, source cards or expandable links. Open each one and identify the page that contains the disputed fact. A source may be your own page, a directory, a news article, a review, a licensing database or a platform-generated profile. Do not assume the first citation is the controlling source; compare all cited pages.
Separate a factual error from generated wording
An answer can paraphrase a correct page poorly. For example, a page might list a seasonal schedule while the answer presents it as year-round. In that case, preserve the page as evidence and report the misleading interpretation. If the page itself contains the outdated schedule, edit the page before reporting the answer.
Step 2: Correct information you control
Update the official website
Correct the visible text on the page that states the business fact. Update contact, location, service and hours information wherever it appears, including the contact page, location pages, footer, appointment page and downloadable documents. Remove conflicting old versions rather than leaving two different answers for crawlers to choose between.
Google recommends verifying website ownership in Search Console and using structured data as an explicit clue about what a page means. Structured data does not override visible text or guarantee an AI answer, so make the human-readable information accurate first and then keep the markup consistent with it.

Keep owned profiles consistent
Use one canonical spelling for the business name, the complete address format, the main telephone number, opening hours and service descriptions. Record effective dates for temporary closures or relocations. Consistency helps a reviewer distinguish a current owner statement from an obsolete third-party page, although no platform promises that matching records will produce an immediate answer change.

Google Business Profile is the owner-managed record for eligible local businesses. Claim and verify the profile, then edit the specific field that is wrong, such as the address, contact information, business type or photos. The profile interface may also expose other editable fields depending on the business category and region.
Review suggested edits promptly
Google can receive user reports and other source updates. When Google asks you to respond to a suggested edit, its documented window is four days to accept or reject it. Some suggested edits may be published without prior review, and Google says not all automatic updates can be managed through the profile. Check the profile for notifications after making your own change and document any alteration you did not submit.
When an edit is rejected or overwritten
Compare the profile with your official website and other authoritative records. Correct the conflicting source, then resubmit the precise field with evidence such as a current contact page, an official registration record or a clearly dated announcement. State exactly which value is wrong and which value should replace it; a general complaint about visibility gives the reviewer less to verify.
Google Knowledge Panel: a different correction route
A Knowledge Panel is not the same as a Business Profile. A verified local business can manage eligible profile fields, but Knowledge Panel descriptions and facts may be assembled from other data sources. The business cannot directly rewrite the panel’s description.

Correct a Knowledge Panel fact
- Sign in to the Google account used to verify the entity.
- Find the panel in Search.
- Select Suggest edits or Feedback.
- Identify the exact fact that is incorrect.
- Provide links or other evidence showing the correct value.
Google may decline a request it cannot verify. Keep the report narrow: identify the old value, the replacement value and the evidence for the replacement.

Correct a Knowledge Panel description
Google says description text comes from various sources and cannot be directly edited or custom-written by the business. First contact the publisher or other source that supplied the description and ask it to correct its page. If the panel remains wrong, submit feedback and explain which source you contacted, what it published, and why the supplied evidence shows the description is inaccurate.
Google may remove an inaccurate description when strong evidence is supplied, but it may select a different description from another source or show no description at all. Your request is therefore a correction request, not an instruction to display wording of your choice.
Bing: choose the route that matches the error
Bing Places for business listing data
For the business information shown in a Bing listing, Microsoft directs businesses to Bing Places. Claim or manage the listing there and correct the affected field. Check that the website, phone number, address and hours agree with the information on your owned pages.
Bing page feedback for factual search errors
For a factual error in a Bing Search result, use the page’s Feedback link. Identify the result, quote the incorrect statement and provide evidence for the correction. Microsoft cautions that reporting a concern does not necessarily remove a URL from search results, so describe the factual problem rather than demanding removal when the page is otherwise legitimate.
Bing Webmaster Toolbox for site-owner questions
Use Bing Webmaster Toolbox for questions about your own site’s presence, crawling or indexing. It is a site-owner channel, not a substitute for correcting a business listing or a third-party page.
ChatGPT Search: understand what you can and cannot change
OpenAI’s documented website-owner control is to allow OAI-Searchbot to access the site and to ensure that the host or content delivery network permits traffic from OpenAI’s published searchbot IP addresses. This can make pages eligible for inclusion in ChatGPT Search. OpenAI explicitly says placement is not guaranteed.

That setting is not an editor for an individual business fact. If a ChatGPT answer contains an old phone number, first correct the page or profile that carries the number. Allowing the crawler to visit a corrected page may help the system retrieve the new information later, but the documentation does not promise a particular answer, ranking or refresh time. Do not describe crawler access as a guaranteed correction mechanism.
There is also no basis for assuming that every ChatGPT Search answer uses one fixed index or that a Bing correction will automatically change a ChatGPT response. Treat each platform’s displayed source and reporting route separately.
When the error is personal information about an individual
If an answer exposes inaccurate, excessive, irrelevant or no-longer-appropriate personal information about a person, OpenAI provides a Privacy Portal process to request that the information be prevented from appearing in ChatGPT responses. Submit specific examples, explain why the information is inaccurate or why removal is necessary, and provide reliable supporting evidence.
This is a personal-data process with contextual review. OpenAI says it cannot independently investigate disputed facts. Do not present it as a general form for editing a company profile, correcting a business description or changing ordinary commercial listing data.

Build an evidence package a reviewer can verify
A concise evidence package is more useful than a long narrative. Include:
- The exact incorrect sentence or field, copied verbatim.
- The correct value, written in the format you want displayed.
- The page or profile where the error appears.
- A current official page or other reliable record supporting the correction.
- The date the correct information became effective, when timing matters.
- Your relationship to the business, such as verified owner or authorized representative, when the platform requests it.
- A screenshot showing the platform context, including the market or location.
Avoid sending several different replacement values. If a phone number has a temporary forwarding line, state which number is the permanent public contact and explain the effective date. If the issue is a description, identify the unsupported sentence instead of asking the platform to promote a preferred marketing message.
Common situations and the correct response
The AI answer cites your own outdated page
Update the page and any duplicate location pages, PDFs or old announcements that repeat the obsolete fact. Check that your structured data and visible text agree. Keep the dated capture of the old answer, but do not report the answer as a platform error until the source page is corrected.
Your website is correct but Google shows an old local phone number
Open the verified Business Profile, edit the phone field and inspect notifications for suggested or automatic updates. If another source continues to supply the old number, correct that source as well and submit evidence through the profile’s available feedback route.
A Knowledge Panel repeats a description from a publication
Ask the publication to amend its page, retain the correspondence or ticket number, then use Knowledge Panel feedback to identify the description, the source you contacted and the evidence supporting the correction. You cannot replace the text with a custom description directly.

If the address is in your listing, correct it through Bing Places. If it is in a third-party page, request a correction from that publisher and use Bing page Feedback to report the factual error. A feedback report does not by itself guarantee that the page will disappear.
ChatGPT gives different answers on different days
Capture each materially different answer with its date, prompt and citations. Compare the cited sources before filing a report. If one answer uses an outdated page, correct that page; if the sources are current but the generated wording is wrong, report the specific answer with the current evidence. Do not assume that repeated prompting is a durable correction.
No source or citation is displayed
Record the platform, exact prompt, account or location context and the complete answer. Check your owned pages and major profiles for the disputed fact, then use the platform’s available feedback mechanism to describe the statement and attach authoritative evidence. Without a displayed source, you may not be able to identify which underlying record caused the error, so make the report as specific as the interface allows.
What to expect after submitting a correction
Correction systems are separate from answer generation. A profile edit may be reviewed before publication; a suggested edit may appear without prior review; a crawler may revisit a page later; and an answer system may select another source even after the original page is fixed. Official guidance does not establish a universal processing time or success rate.

Recheck the profile or page for the corrected value, preserve confirmation messages, and run occasional searches using the affected market and wording. If the source is correct but the generated answer remains wrong, submit a focused follow-up that references the original report and supplies the current evidence.
Prevent future factual drift
- Maintain a single internal record of the canonical business name, address, phone number, hours, services and ownership wording.
- Assign an owner for each platform account and review access after staff changes.
- Use the same effective date and formatting across your website, business profiles and public announcements.
- Check seasonal hours, relocations, temporary closures and service changes promptly on every controlled profile.
- Keep an evidence folder with screenshots, dated source pages and platform case numbers.
- Review pages that commonly supply descriptions, such as official biographies or organization profiles, when a major change occurs.
These controls reduce conflicting signals, but they cannot force an AI system to use one particular source or guarantee a particular generated answer.
