Use the least aggressive correction that makes the important lines look straight. Start with a matching lens profile in Lightroom, lower its distortion amount if the composition bends too far, and switch to Photoshop’s Adaptive Wide Angle filter when you need to guide individual lines. Keep the original, inspect the corners at high magnification, and adjust scale or crop only enough to remove unusable edges. Stronger correction can produce straighter architecture but also changes more pixels and may force a tighter crop.
What fisheye correction changes
A fisheye lens projects a very wide view onto a flat sensor. Straight features near the edges can appear bowed, while objects at the margins may look stretched. Correction remaps those pixels toward a more rectilinear view. The remapping is why the corrected image may not occupy the same rectangle as the original: some corners can become empty, transparent, or optically unusable.

There is no universal correction percentage. A photograph of a room may need its door frames straight, while a landscape may benefit from retaining more of its curved horizon and wider composition. Treat correction as a composition decision: fix the lines that communicate the subject, then stop before additional straightening costs more of the picture than it improves.

Prepare the file so you can change course
- Preserve the original. Work on a duplicate file or a duplicate layer. This lets you compare the corrected geometry with the untouched framing and return to the source if a later crop becomes too severe.
- Identify the visual problem. Look for barrel-like curvature from the lens, converging verticals caused by camera tilt, or both. A fisheye profile addresses lens curvature; it does not automatically correct perspective.
- Mark the lines that matter. Choose a few structural references such as a door jamb, window mullion, horizon, or wall edge. Do not try to make every edge perfectly straight if doing so makes people or foreground objects look unnaturally stretched.
- Inspect the whole frame. Check faces, text, and objects close to the corners before deciding how much correction you can afford. Edge stretching can be more distracting than moderate residual curvature.
Lightroom: begin with a matching lens profile
Lightroom is usually the most efficient first pass when the camera and lens are recognized. Its lens-profile correction uses available camera and lens metadata, including focal length, aperture, and focus distance where those fields exist. The profile supplies a model for the lens rather than asking you to draw every correction manually.

Apply the profile
- Open the image in Lightroom’s Develop workspace.
- Open the Lens Corrections panel and enable Enable Lens Corrections. Lightroom attempts to select a profile from the image metadata.
- Confirm that the displayed make and model match the lens used for the photograph. If the match is wrong, choose a different available profile rather than accepting a correction for a similar-looking lens.
- View the entire frame, then zoom into each corner. Compare a distinctive straight feature near the edge with the center of the image.
A profile is a starting point, not a requirement to use 100 percent of its correction. Lightroom’s distortion correction amount can be reduced below its default 100 when the full profile bends the composition too much. Lowering the amount generally keeps more of the source framing while leaving some curvature, so judge the result against the lines you identified before editing.
Fine-tune without surrendering the edges
- Reduce the distortion amount gradually instead of switching abruptly between full correction and none.
- After each change, inspect the frame at fit-to-screen size. A line that looks perfect at high magnification may not justify a visibly tighter composition when viewed as a whole.
- Check the corners for stretching and empty boundary areas. If an edge contains content that is important to the story, retaining a small amount of curvature may be preferable to cropping it away.
- Once the lens curvature is acceptable, make any crop adjustment as a separate decision. Crop only the unusable boundary, not an arbitrary symmetrical amount.
When Lightroom’s profile is not enough
A profile may be unavailable for an older, adapted, or unusual lens, or it may produce a result that is technically straight but visually wrong for your composition. In those cases, move to a guided correction in Photoshop. Adaptive Wide Angle is designed for pronounced wide-angle and fisheye curvature where you need to identify which features should become straight.
Photoshop Adaptive Wide Angle: guide the lines that matter
Adaptive Wide Angle includes a Fisheye correction type, constraint lines, and controls for Scale and Crop Factor. It can also work from a specified focal length and crop factor when lens information is unavailable. The filter is useful when a few architectural or horizon lines define whether the image feels correct.

Set up the filter
- Open a duplicate of the image in Photoshop, or duplicate the background layer so the original pixels remain available.
- Choose Filter > Adaptive Wide Angle.
- Set Correction Type to Fisheye. If the lens data is not supplied automatically, enter the focal-length and crop-factor information you know; do not invent values for an unidentified lens.
- Draw a constraint line over a feature that should be straight. Add lines to other important references, such as a vertical frame and a horizontal sill, rather than covering every visible edge.
- Watch the entire preview while adding constraints. A line can be mathematically straight while the surrounding objects become too stretched, so remove or reposition constraints that create a less natural result.
Use Scale and Crop Factor as framing controls
Scale changes how large the corrected result appears in the output frame. Crop Factor changes the effective framing used by the correction. Adjust them while watching the corners, because a setting that removes a blank edge can also cut away a subject or make the image feel cramped.
- Start with the smallest scale change that keeps the corrected image inside the canvas.
- Adjust crop factor only as far as needed to hide unusable boundaries.
- Toggle your constraint lines or temporarily remove one to see whether it is responsible for an unnatural bend elsewhere.
- Apply the filter only after checking faces, text, and objects at the margins for uncomfortable stretching.
Adobe’s Photoshop documentation warns that straightening curved content can leave blank or transparent regions along the edges. Crop those regions, or use Content-Aware Fill when the surrounding texture is suitable for reconstruction. Content-Aware Fill is not a substitute for a real missing subject; it is most defensible for simple continuation of sky, walls, floors, or other repetitive surfaces.
Photoshop Lens Correction: automatic profile or manual control
Photoshop’s Lens Correction filter is another option when you want automatic profile matching or a manual distortion adjustment. Its automatic mode can use camera and lens information from the file. The custom controls let you change distortion directly when a profile is unavailable or does not match the look you need.

Profile-based correction
- Choose Filter > Lens Correction.
- Use the automatic correction area to see whether Photoshop identifies a suitable camera and lens profile.
- Inspect the preview at the edges before accepting it. A technically matched profile can still remove more of your preferred framing than you want.
- Use the filter’s edge and scale handling to keep the corrected result inside the canvas, then crop only the remaining empty boundary.
Manual distortion and edge handling
Manual distortion control is useful for a partial correction: you can reduce the bowing without forcing the entire frame into a fully rectilinear projection. Photoshop’s edge settings and scale controls address the regions exposed when the correction changes the image shape. Keep the adjustment modest, because a large manual value can make the center look correct while exaggerating the corners.
Do not confuse lens curvature with perspective
Fisheye distortion and perspective distortion can appear together but require different tools. Lens curvature bends a line that should be straight even when the camera is level. Perspective makes parallel lines converge because the camera is tilted or the subject recedes in depth.
After correcting the lens, use Lightroom’s Geometry, Upright, or manual geometry controls when the remaining problem is converging verticals or a tilted horizon. Applying a strong fisheye correction to solve a perspective problem can waste frame area and produce stretched edges without fixing the underlying convergence. Correct the optical curvature first, then make a restrained perspective adjustment.

Which workflow fits your image?
| Situation | Best starting tool | Controls documented for the workflow | Frame considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| A recognized camera and lens with ordinary fisheye curvature | Lightroom lens profile | Enable Lens Corrections; profile-based distortion amount that can be reduced below the default 100 | Lower the amount when full correction bends the composition too far; inspect corners before cropping |
| Strong curvature or a few specific lines must be straight | Photoshop Adaptive Wide Angle | Fisheye correction type, constraint lines, Scale, Crop Factor | Guided lines can improve a key feature, but scale and crop changes may remove margins or expose blank boundaries |
| No reliable profile or a need for direct distortion control | Photoshop Lens Correction | Automatic profile matching, manual distortion, edge handling, scale | Manual values allow partial correction; edge and scale settings help manage areas exposed by remapping |
| Lines converge because the camera was tilted | Lightroom Geometry/Upright or manual geometry controls | Perspective and geometry adjustments | Perspective correction is separate from fisheye correction and can require its own framing decision |
A frame-saving editing sequence
The following order keeps irreversible cropping until you understand what the correction is doing.
- Duplicate or preserve the source. Keep an untouched version available for direct comparison.
- Apply a matching profile first. In Lightroom, enable lens corrections and verify the selected camera and lens.
- Evaluate at two scales. Fit the whole image to judge composition, then zoom into corners to identify stretching, curvature, and empty boundaries.
- Reduce correction strength if needed. Lower Lightroom’s distortion amount rather than accepting a full correction that sacrifices important margins.
- Switch to guided correction when a profile cannot deliver the desired shape. In Adaptive Wide Angle, choose Fisheye and constrain only the lines that define the subject.
- Use the smallest scale or crop-factor change that produces a usable frame. Recheck the subject after every change; the mathematically cleanest rectangle is not always the strongest composition.
- Handle boundary gaps last. Crop transparent or blank areas, or try Content-Aware Fill only where the neighboring image provides a credible pattern.
- Correct perspective separately. If verticals still converge after lens correction, use Geometry or Upright controls instead of increasing fisheye strength.
- Compare before and after at normal viewing size. Keep the version that preserves the most meaningful content while making the selected lines read naturally.
Troubleshooting common results
The profile list does not contain your lens
Do not substitute a profile for a merely similar lens without checking the corners. Use Photoshop’s manual Lens Correction controls for a restrained adjustment, or use Adaptive Wide Angle with known focal-length and crop-factor data. If those data are unavailable, rely on visible straight references and make smaller changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe center looks right but the corners look stretched
Reduce the correction amount or remove constraints that force too many lines simultaneously. A fisheye image contains more angular coverage near the edges, so demanding a perfectly rectilinear result can enlarge marginal objects. Preserve a little curvature if it keeps people, signs, or foreground objects natural.
Best Value
Constraint lines improve one wall and damage another
Use fewer, more authoritative constraints. Start with the lines that carry the viewer’s sense of level and verticality, then reassess the rest. If two constraints conflict because the scene itself is not planar, prioritize the subject rather than forcing every edge into one geometric model.
Transparent or blank corners appear after correction
Use Scale or Crop Factor to bring the corrected image inside the canvas, then trim only the remaining blank boundary. Content-Aware Fill can help on uncomplicated surfaces, but do not use it to fabricate a missing person, sign, or architectural detail.
Verticals still lean after fisheye correction
That is usually a perspective issue rather than residual lens curvature. Stop increasing fisheye strength and make a separate Geometry or Upright adjustment. Recheck the crop afterward because perspective changes can alter the usable margins.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The correction looks technically straight but visually wrong
Return to the uncorrected and partially corrected versions. Choose the setting that makes the important feature believable at normal viewing size, not the one that maximizes the number of perfectly straight pixels. The goal is a convincing photograph with useful framing, not a geometric demonstration.
How to decide when to stop
Stop when the lines that explain the scene read as straight, the corners do not draw attention through stretching, and the remaining frame contains the subject you intended to keep. If the next increment of correction requires a noticeably tighter crop or introduces obvious edge distortion, retain the wider version and accept some curvature. This stopping rule is especially important for action, interiors, and landscapes where the outer frame carries meaningful context.
Software labels can change between releases. Adobe’s Photoshop help pages for Adaptive Wide Angle and Lens Correction were updated October 4, 2026, and September 30, 2026, respectively; Lightroom’s profile and Geometry controls may be presented differently in future versions. The control names above are the documented labels associated with these workflows, so use the closest current equivalent if your interface has moved them.
