First identify the country, return and tax period, then determine the correct classification and rate from the transaction’s dates and facts. India, Canada and the UK use different correction routes: India may use GSTR-1A before GSTR-3B, Canada generally requires an adjustment request, and UK VAT errors may be adjusted on a later return only within prescribed limits.
Start with the jurisdiction and the exact error
“GST” is not a single worldwide filing system. India’s GST returns, Canada’s GST/HST returns and the UK’s VAT returns have different amendment mechanisms, deadlines and monetary thresholds. Do not apply one country’s procedure to another.

Before changing anything, write down:
- the country and tax registration concerned;
- the return form that was filed;
- the tax period and, where relevant, the financial year;
- the invoice numbers and supply dates affected;
- whether the problem is a rate, a product or service classification, or both;
- whether the filed return has already been followed by a later return or payment; and
- the tax, output, input-credit and customer details that would change.
A rate change does not automatically tell you which rate applies. The applicable treatment is a transaction-level question. Establish the classification and the time-of-supply result first, then select the correction route for the jurisdiction.

Determine the correct rate and classification before editing the return
Rate changes are governed by transaction timing
For India, section 14 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act applies time-of-supply rules that depend on facts such as the type of supply, the invoice date and the payment date. The rate in force on the day you correct a return is not necessarily the rate that applied to the original supply. A rate notification or a classification change must be read together with those timing facts.

Build a short calculation for each affected invoice. Record the supply date, invoice date, payment date, the rate you originally used, the rate you now believe applies, the taxable value and the tax difference. If the rate changed between two of those events, document why the applicable time-of-supply rule selects one rate rather than another.
Wrong HSN or SAC codes require a classification analysis
HSN codes identify goods and SAC codes identify services. A code should be corrected only after checking the product or service description, composition or function where relevant, the unit of supply and the classification law or notification applicable on the supply date. A different code can change the rate, reporting summary and the information visible to a customer, so do not treat it as a cosmetic data edit.
If the classification changed because an authority issued a new notification, preserve the notification’s effective date and any transition language with the invoice file. If the facts are genuinely ambiguous or the liability is material, obtain transaction-specific tax advice before amending the return.

India: correcting GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B
This is the leading interpretation of the question because the Indian GST Portal uses the terms GSTR-1, GSTR-1A, HSN/SAC summaries and amendments. Confirm the live portal instructions and the exact table for your supply before filing.
What GSTR-1 and GSTR-1A do
GSTR-1 is the statement of outward supplies. The GST Portal says it includes HSN/SAC-wise supply summaries and facilities to amend reported information. GSTR-1A is an optional facility for adding or amending details for the same tax period after GSTR-1 has been filed and before GSTR-3B for that period is filed. The corrected value is then auto-populated into that period’s GSTR-3B.

GSTR-1A is therefore a same-period correction window, not a general replacement for every earlier return. It cannot be filed after GSTR-3B for that period has been filed.
Procedure when GSTR-3B is still pending
- Reconcile the source documents. List every invoice, credit note and debit note affected by the rate or code change. Tie each line to the correct supply date and customer details.
- Recalculate the tax. Separate the taxable value from the tax difference. Show the original amount, corrected amount and the reason for the change.
- Check the classification and rate. Confirm the HSN/SAC and the applicable rate under the law and notifications effective on the relevant dates. Do not choose a rate merely because the return is being filed now.
- Open the GST Portal’s GSTR-1A facility. Select the same tax period in which GSTR-1 was filed. Use the amendment or addition option that matches the affected outward-supply record.
- Enter the corrected particulars. Update the invoice-level information and HSN/SAC summary as required by the portal. Review taxable value, integrated tax, central tax, state or union-territory tax and cess, where applicable, against your calculation.
- Submit and retain the acknowledgement. Save the filing reference, the submitted data and the working paper that explains why the change was made.
- File that period’s GSTR-3B using the corrected figures. The portal states that the amended value is auto-populated into the period’s GSTR-3B. Reconcile the auto-populated amount to your books before filing rather than assuming the result is correct.
When GSTR-3B has already been filed
The GST Portal says GSTR-1A cannot be filed after GSTR-3B for the period has been filed. The portal continues to provide amendment of records in a subsequent GSTR-1 as a separate facility. That means the next step depends on the record, the period and the currently available table or amendment function; it is not the same workflow as a pending GSTR-3B correction.
Do not create a second invoice merely to force the numbers to balance. Identify the original record, use the subsequent-return amendment facility that the portal permits, and assess the effect on the recipient’s reported purchase information and on the tax already paid. Verify the current instructions before submission because portal functionality and table labels can change.
Prior-financial-year invoice corrections
The GST Portal’s current GSTR-1 FAQ states a 30 November cut-off in the following financial year for rectifying prior-financial-year invoice details. For example, an invoice from one financial year may have a correction deadline of 30 November in the next financial year under that stated rule. Confirm that the invoice and amendment type fall within the rule and check the live portal before relying on the date.
Keep evidence of the original invoice, the amended entry, the filing acknowledgement and the reason for the correction. If the deadline has passed, do not assume that a later GSTR-1 entry is automatically valid; obtain advice on the available statutory route.

India checklist for a rate or HSN/SAC correction
- Identify whether the error affects one invoice, a group of invoices or an HSN/SAC summary.
- Separate errors in taxable value from errors in the rate or classification.
- Apply the time-of-supply rule to each rate-change date.
- Check whether the affected tax period’s GSTR-3B is filed.
- Use GSTR-1A only for the same period and only before that period’s GSTR-3B.
- If GSTR-3B is already filed, use the subsequent GSTR-1 amendment facility that the portal permits.
- Check the 30 November following-financial-year cut-off for prior-year invoice details.
- Reconcile the corrected outward-supply data to the tax paid and to customer records.
- Store invoices, calculations, notifications or classification support, acknowledgements and the explanation for the change together.
Canada: GST/HST returns use an adjustment request
Canada’s process is not an Indian-style replacement return. Canada Revenue Agency policy says that, in general, a registrant does not file another GST/HST return to change one already sent. The registrant requests an adjustment, and the Minister may refuse the request in whole or in part.

- Confirm that the issue is a GST/HST return error. Separate a reporting mistake from a new transaction, a credit note or a change that belongs in a later period.
- Recalculate the corrected amount. Preserve the invoice, the tax calculation and the reason for the adjustment. If a rate or tax status changed, tie the result to the transaction date and applicable rule.
- Use the CRA adjustment request process. Do not submit a second return as a substitute unless CRA instructions for your case expressly require it.
- Retain the request and CRA response. An adjustment is not guaranteed merely because the arithmetic is correct; CRA may accept, reduce or refuse it.
Canadian time limit
CRA policy describes a general four-year reassessment limitation calculated from the later of the return’s due date and filing date, subject to legal exceptions. Treat that as a planning limit, not as permission to delay. Check the specific return, exception and current CRA instructions before submitting an adjustment.
United Kingdom: VAT errors are corrected under a threshold system
UK VAT rules are included only as a comparison. They are not generic GST instructions and should not be applied to India or Canada.
When a net error can be put on a later VAT return
HM Revenue & Customs permits qualifying net errors on previous VAT returns to be adjusted on a later VAT return. Its current guidance describes a £10,000 threshold. It also describes a £10,000 to £50,000 band that is subject to a 1% of box 6 sales or output threshold. The figures govern the described UK VAT method for qualifying errors; they do not establish a route for deliberate errors or for another country’s GST.
Errors above the applicable limits, and deliberate errors, require separate notification rather than simply being folded into a later return. Keep a calculation showing how the net error was measured and how the relevant sales or output threshold was tested.

Records and the correction period
HMRC requires records of the error. Its guidance gives a general four-year correction period for the specified categories, with exceptions. Check the category and exception before relying on that period.
HMRC’s online guidance also says form VAT652 can no longer be used for corrections. Follow the current online notification route instead of using an obsolete form.

Working papers that make a correction defensible
Keep one file for each correction project, even when several invoices are involved. Include:
- the original return and filing acknowledgement;
- the affected invoices, credit notes and debit notes;
- the product or service description and the original and corrected HSN/SAC or other classification;
- the rate notifications, classification references and effective dates used;
- a transaction-by-transaction time-of-supply analysis where a rate changed;
- the original and corrected taxable values and tax amounts;
- the portal submission, adjustment request or notification acknowledgement;
- the customer or recipient communication, where the correction changes an invoice or reported supply; and
- a short statement of who approved the correction and why.
This file prevents a common failure: correcting the return but losing the evidence that explains why the new rate or classification was used.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the correction date to choose the tax rate
The return-correction date is an administrative event. The taxable rate is determined by the law and transaction facts for the supply. Reperform the time-of-supply analysis instead of copying the current rate into an old invoice.
Best Value
Changing an HSN/SAC code without checking the tax effect
A code change can alter the rate, tax amount and HSN/SAC summary. Recalculate the invoice and the affected return fields together.
Filing an India GSTR-1A after GSTR-3B
GSTR-1A is unavailable after GSTR-3B for that period. Check the return status before opening the correction screen; if GSTR-3B is already filed, assess the subsequent GSTR-1 amendment route.
Applying UK thresholds to another country
The £10,000, £50,000 and 1% figures belong to the described UK VAT method. They do not create a Canadian or Indian GST threshold.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Submitting a Canadian replacement return
CRA’s general policy is an adjustment request for a filed GST/HST return. A second return can create a new error instead of correcting the old one.
Ignoring the cut-off
India’s stated 30 November following-financial-year date, Canada’s general four-year limitation and the UK’s general four-year period are not interchangeable. Identify the jurisdiction and the exact error category before relying on any date.
A decision path you can use before filing
- Country: Is this India, Canada or the UK, or another jurisdiction with its own rules?
- Return status: Has the relevant return been filed, and has India’s GSTR-3B already been filed?
- Transaction result: What classification and rate apply to each affected supply under the dates and facts?
- Correction route: Does the authority provide a same-period amendment, a later-return adjustment, an adjustment request or a separate notification?
- Deadline: Is the correction inside the applicable statutory or portal window?
- Evidence: Can the invoice, calculation, legal basis and acknowledgement be produced together?
- Review: Do the amended return, tax payment, customer data and accounting records agree?
If any answer is uncertain, pause the filing and confirm the current tax-authority instructions. A classification that is unclear or a material tax liability warrants professional advice specific to the transaction.
