To move an ordinary emoji between Android apps, select the emoji (or the surrounding text), tap Copy, open the other app, tap its text field, and choose Paste. If you are creating a message from scratch, your keyboard’s emoji panel is usually faster. The important distinction is that a standard emoji is text, while an Emoji Kitchen creation is a sticker or image with different sharing rules.
First, identify what you are sharing
Android can carry an emoji in more than one form. The method you need depends on whether the item is a Unicode character, a sticker, or an image.

| What you have | How Android handles it | Best way to share | What the recipient gets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard emoji such as 😀 or ❤️ | A text character in the clipboard | Copy and paste into another text field | Editable text rendered by the recipient’s device and app |
| Several standard emoji in a sequence | A text string, including each character and any modifiers | Select the complete sequence, then copy and paste | Editable text, subject to the recipient’s emoji support |
| Emoji Kitchen combination | A sticker or image rather than ordinary text | Use the app’s sticker, share, or image controls | Artwork as a sticker or image; it is not normally editable emoji text |
| Screenshot or other emoji image | Image data | Use the app’s image-sharing or attachment command | The image itself, if the destination accepts that format |
Copying works only when the source app exposes the item as selectable text and the destination app accepts pasted text. A graphic that merely looks like an emoji may not be selectable as a character.

- Select it in the source app. Touch and hold the emoji or the text around it. If the app selects a larger passage, drag the selection handles until the emoji or desired sequence is included.
- Copy the selection. Tap Copy in the contextual toolbar. If no selection handles or Copy command appear, that app may be displaying the emoji as an image, restricting selection, or using a custom viewer.
- Open the destination app. Switch to the messaging, email, notes, social, or other app where you want to use the emoji.
- Place the cursor. Tap the destination text-entry field. For a precise insertion point, tap between existing characters.
- Paste. Touch and hold inside the field and tap Paste. On keyboards that expose a clipboard button, open the keyboard’s Clipboard panel and tap the copied item instead.
- Check before sending. Make sure the emoji or sequence is present, then use the destination app’s Send, Submit, or Save control.
Android’s clipboard carries text strings between apps that implement the standard copy-and-paste framework. An app can still disable selection or paste, so a missing command does not necessarily indicate a phone problem.
Copying more than one emoji
When emoji are next to words or punctuation, select the complete range you need. Emoji sequences can contain multiple Unicode characters—for example, a base character plus a skin-tone modifier or a joined sequence—so selecting only part of the range can produce a different result. If exact selection is difficult, copy the whole short phrase and remove unwanted characters after pasting.
A 30-second example
Suppose a Keep note contains “Great job! 🎉👏”. Touch and hold the sentence, adjust the handles so both emoji are included, and tap Copy. Open Gmail, tap the message body, touch and hold at the insertion point, and choose Paste. The characters remain editable, so you can delete the words, add another emoji, or move the cursor before sending. If the note instead contains a decorative sticker, use the note or destination app’s image-sharing controls; there may be no text range to select.

If you are composing a new message, opening the keyboard’s emoji panel avoids the copy-and-paste step. Google’s Gboard instructions use this sequence in any app with a writable field:
- Open an app where you can write, such as a messaging app, Gmail, or Keep.
- Tap the text-entry field to display Gboard.
- Tap the Emoji key.
- Tap one or more emoji. They are inserted at the cursor in the text field.
- Use the app’s Send, Submit, or Save control.
To return to the letter keyboard, tap ABC. The exact position or appearance of the Emoji key varies with keyboard layout, phone maker, screen size, and settings. Some Gboard instructions apply only to Android 7.0 and later; a current phone may label the key or panel slightly differently.
If the Emoji key is not visible
- Tap a text field first; the key is not available when the keyboard is closed.
- Look for a smiley-face icon, a comma or symbol key that opens alternate layouts, or a toolbar button that contains emoji.
- Open the keyboard’s settings and check that the emoji or symbols key is enabled. Menus differ by Gboard version.
- If another keyboard is active, follow that keyboard’s emoji-panel control instead; the insertion principle is the same.
You can insert one emoji, several in succession, or a mixture of words and emoji. They appear at the cursor, not necessarily at the end of the draft. If you tapped the wrong location, move the cursor and choose the emoji again rather than copying the entire message to a new app.
Use Gboard Clipboard for a frequently reused emoji
Gboard’s Clipboard panel can keep recently copied text available without returning to the original app. This is useful for an emoji sequence, a short greeting containing emoji, or another small text fragment.

- Open the Clipboard section from the keyboard toolbar. If Clipboard is not visible, use the toolbar’s edit or overflow control to add it.
- Tap a saved item to paste it at the cursor.
- To retain an item, touch and hold it in Clipboard and tap Pin.
Google says clipboard history clears shortly after its last use, except for pinned text. Treat a pinned item as persistent data: do not pin passwords, private messages, authentication codes, or other sensitive content merely for convenience.
Clipboard is a convenience for text, not a guarantee that every app will accept every item. A destination can still reject pasted content, and an item that was copied as an image needs an image-capable destination. If a frequently used sequence disappears, copy it again from the source or pin it only after checking that it contains nothing confidential.
Share an emoji between two Galaxy devices
Copying between apps on one phone is an Android clipboard operation. Samsung also documents a separate cross-device clipboard feature for eligible Galaxy devices running One UI 3.1 or later.
Requirements
- Both Galaxy devices must support the feature and run One UI 3.1 or later.
- Both devices must be signed in to the same Samsung account.
- Both devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Bluetooth must be turned on on both devices.
- Continue on other devices must be enabled in the relevant Samsung settings.
Copy and paste across the devices
- On the first Galaxy device, select the emoji or surrounding text and tap Copy.
- Move to the second Galaxy device.
- Open the destination app and tap its text-entry field.
- Touch and hold in the field, then tap Paste.
If the second device cannot paste the item, verify the account, Wi-Fi network, Bluetooth state, One UI version, and Continue on other devices setting. This feature is not required for ordinary app-to-app copying on a single phone.

Same-phone copying normally needs only a selectable source, a text field, and the Android clipboard. Galaxy-to-Galaxy copying adds account, network, Bluetooth, software-version, and Samsung-setting requirements. Do not troubleshoot a simple copy between Gmail and Messages by changing cross-device settings; those settings matter only when the clipboard must travel to another device.
Standard emoji versus Emoji Kitchen stickers
Google describes Emoji Kitchen as a way to browse, create, save, and share combinations as stickers. Its combinations work with compatible emoji and may require a download. A Kitchen result should therefore be treated as a sticker or image, not as a normal Unicode character.
| Question | Standard emoji text | Emoji Kitchen result |
|---|---|---|
| Can I select it with normal text handles? | Usually, when the source app permits text selection | Not necessarily; it may be an image or sticker object |
| Can I edit individual characters after pasting? | Yes, it remains text | No; the combination is normally one graphic |
| Where should I share it? | Any destination text field that accepts pasted text | An app’s sticker, image attachment, or share control |
| Will every recipient see it? | Only if the recipient’s system and app support the character or sequence | Only if the destination supports that sticker or image format |
If you need one exact piece of artwork, use the source app’s sticker or image-sharing command and confirm what the recipient sees. Pasting a standard emoji cannot guarantee the same drawing.

How to tell which form you have
Place the cursor beside the item and try normal text selection. If handles can encompass it as part of a sentence and Copy appears, it is probably text. If the item behaves like a movable object, opens an image menu, or offers sticker actions instead, use those controls. A screenshot is always image data even if it shows a familiar Unicode emoji.
Why an emoji looks different on another phone
Copying a standard emoji copies the underlying character, not a fixed bitmap. Each operating system, app, and font can render that character with its own artwork. Unicode explains that the Unicode Consortium does not control which emoji platform vendors support or how those emoji appear on their platforms.
Differences can include facial expression, color, hand position, object shape, or the way a sequence is combined. A newer character may also appear as an empty box, a missing-glyph symbol, or separate components on a device that does not support it. That is a rendering-compatibility issue, not proof that copying failed.
When exact appearance matters
- Send an image or sticker through the destination app rather than a text character.
- Use the app’s built-in sticker picker if both people use the same service.
- For a design, announcement, or screenshot, attach the original image so the artwork does not depend on the recipient’s emoji font.
Text is preferable when the recipient should be able to search, edit, select, or combine the emoji with words. An image is preferable when the visual design itself is the message. Neither choice changes the other person’s app requirements: a destination must accept pasted text for a character and the relevant image or sticker format for artwork.
Android clipboard notices and privacy behavior
Android 13 and later display a standard visual confirmation when content is added to the clipboard. Android 12 and later usually show a notice when an app reads clipboard data. These messages are system privacy indicators; they do not prevent normal copying and pasting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A clipboard can contain more than the emoji you intended to move. Before copying a long selection, check that it does not include a phone number, address, private conversation, password, or other confidential text. After pasting sensitive material, remove it from the destination and avoid pinning it in Gboard Clipboard.
When a confirmation or read notice appears, it does not mean that the emoji was converted into an image or that the destination has received it. It simply reports a clipboard write or read. Continue by checking the actual text field, then use the app’s own send or save control.

Troubleshooting: when copy and paste does not work
No Copy command appears
- Touch and hold slightly longer or on the text next to the emoji.
- Try selecting the entire message or sentence, then narrow the handles.
- Check whether the item is a sticker, GIF, or image. Use the source app’s Share, Save, or sticker controls instead of text selection.
- Some protected viewers and fields intentionally block selection.
Paste is missing or disabled
- Tap inside an editable field rather than a label, preview, or read-only area.
- Confirm that the destination app accepts text at that location.
- Open Gboard’s Clipboard panel and select the item there.
- Copy the item again, then switch apps immediately; clipboard history may expire after a period of inactivity unless the item is pinned.
The pasted result is a box or the wrong symbol
The recipient’s system or app may not support the character or sequence. Try a simpler, widely supported emoji, update the relevant software when an update is available, or send an image/sticker when the exact visual matters.
Only part of a family, profession, or skin-tone sequence appears
These are often multi-character sequences. Return to the source, select the entire displayed sequence, and copy it as one range. If the destination still separates the components, it may not support that sequence as a combined glyph.
Galaxy-to-Galaxy sharing fails
Recheck that both phones meet the One UI 3.1-or-later requirement, use the same Samsung account and Wi-Fi network, have Bluetooth enabled, and have Continue on other devices turned on. Without those conditions, use ordinary copy and paste separately on each device.
The item pastes, but it cannot be edited
That usually indicates a sticker or image rather than a standard character. Use the destination’s image tools if you want to resize, forward, or save it. If editable text is required, return to a source that contains the Unicode emoji and copy that character instead.

| Your situation | Recommended method | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You are writing a new message | Keyboard Emoji panel | It avoids leaving the text field and is quickest for ordinary emoji. |
| An emoji already appears as selectable text | Copy, switch apps, paste | It preserves the character or sequence as editable text. |
| You reuse the same emoji phrase often | Gboard Clipboard, with Pin only for non-sensitive content | The item can be retrieved without reopening the source app. |
| You need to move text between eligible Galaxy phones | Samsung cross-device clipboard | It extends clipboard use across devices when its account, network, Bluetooth, and settings requirements are met. |
| The item is an Emoji Kitchen creation | Sticker or image sharing | Kitchen combinations are graphics, not ordinary text characters. |
| The recipient must see identical artwork | Image or sticker | Text emoji are rendered by the recipient’s platform and may look different. |
Quick checklist
- Is the item ordinary selectable text, or a sticker/image?
- For text, select it, tap Copy, open the other app, tap its field, and tap Paste.
- For new writing, open the keyboard’s Emoji panel instead.
- Use Gboard Clipboard for repeat use; pin only content that is safe to retain.
- For Galaxy-to-Galaxy clipboard sharing, verify One UI 3.1 or later, the same Samsung account and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Continue on other devices.
- If the appearance changes, remember that the copied character is rendered by the recipient’s device. Send an image or sticker when exact artwork is required.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I copy and paste emojis on Android?
Touch and hold the emoji or nearby text, adjust the selection handles, and tap Copy. Open the other app, tap an editable text field, touch and hold at the insertion point, and tap Paste. This works when the source exposes the emoji as text and the destination accepts pasted text.
How do I share an emoji from one app to another?
For a standard emoji, select it in the source app, copy it, switch apps, and paste it into the destination field. If it is an Emoji Kitchen result, sticker, GIF, or image, use the source app’s Share, sticker, or image-attachment control instead.
Why does my emoji look different on someone else’s phone?
Copying transfers the Unicode character, not a guaranteed image. The recipient’s operating system, app, font, and emoji support determine the artwork. Send a sticker or image when everyone must see the same design.

How do I keep an emoji in my clipboard?
Copy the emoji, open Gboard in any text field, open Clipboard, touch and hold the item, and tap Pin. Clipboard history clears shortly after its last use except for pinned text, so pin only harmless content and never sensitive information.
Can I copy an Emoji Kitchen combination as text?
Usually not. Google describes Emoji Kitchen combinations as stickers that work with compatible emoji and may require a download. Share them through the app’s sticker or image controls; they are not normally editable Unicode text.
Why can’t I select the emoji in a message?
The app may be showing a sticker or image, may use a protected viewer, or may restrict text selection. Try selecting the surrounding sentence. If no Copy command appears, use the app’s Share, Save, or sticker controls.

Can I paste emoji between two Samsung Galaxy phones?
Samsung’s cross-device clipboard supports eligible Galaxy devices on One UI 3.1 or later when both use the same Samsung account and Wi-Fi network, Bluetooth is on, and Continue on other devices is enabled. Copy on one phone and paste into a text field on the other.
What should I do if a pasted emoji is an empty box?
The destination device or app may not support that character or sequence. Copy the complete sequence again, try a more widely supported emoji, or send an image or sticker if the exact visual is important.
The Bottom Line
Use Gboard’s Emoji panel for new text. To move an existing standard emoji, select it, copy it, switch apps, and paste into an editable field. Keep repeat-use text in Gboard Clipboard only when it is safe to pin. Treat Emoji Kitchen results as stickers, and send an image or sticker whenever the recipient must see identical artwork.
