You’ll need music files stored on the Mac, a data-capable cable that fits both devices, and a file-transfer app that works with your Mac and phone.
Choose the right transfer route

Copy Mac music to your Galaxy phone over USB
- Find the files on your Mac. Use music files that are present in the Mac’s file system. A song listed in a streaming app—or downloaded only for offline playback inside that app—is not necessarily a file you can copy.
- Install and open Android File Transfer. This is the application named in Samsung’s Mac-to-Galaxy instructions.
- Connect the phone. Unlock the Galaxy and connect it to the Mac with a USB cable that fits both devices and supports data transfer. Samsung’s guide does not specify a connector that works for every model.
- Approve access. If the Mac asks for permission, approve it. When prompted on the phone, tap Allow. The file-transfer app needs access to browse the device.
- Copy the music. In the file-transfer window, open the phone’s music directory and drag the selected files into it.
- Finish and check playback. Wait for the copy to complete before disconnecting the cable. Then open a music player on the phone and check that the files appear and play.
If Android File Transfer is unavailable or does not work
There is a difference between Samsung’s current support instructions and the status described by a third-party project: Samsung’s Canada guide still names Android File Transfer, while the OpenMTP project describes Android File Transfer as discontinued and offers OpenMTP as a macOS alternative. That discontinuation claim comes from OpenMTP, not Samsung or Google. You can investigate OpenMTP if Samsung’s named app is unavailable or fails, but it is not established here as Samsung-approved or guaranteed to work with every Mac and Galaxy combination.

Google’s Android USB file-transfer help describes a general Android workflow, including selecting File Transfer, but its surfaced instructions are for Windows. They do not establish that a Mac will show the same menu or file-transfer window.

Check whether the music can be transferred and played
DRM-protected purchases and app downloads
Samsung warns that purchased music protected by digital rights management (DRM) may not be compatible with Galaxy devices. Its Smart Switch guidance also limits relevant music transfers to DRM-free content. File formats
Samsung’s Smart Switch backup guidance lists MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC, FLAC, MIDI, and AMR as music extensions. That list applies to the cited Smart Switch backup guidance; it does not guarantee that every format will play in every music app or apply to every transfer method. Samsung Smart Switch support
When the prompts or screens differ
Samsung says its transfer instructions apply to devices sold in Canada and that screens and settings can vary by region. Menu names and prompts may also differ by model or software version. If your phone does not show the expected approval prompt or the Mac does not display the phone, check Samsung support for your model rather than assuming every Galaxy uses the same screen or connector.
