How to Cook Frozen Pizza in an Air Fryer Oven Without a Soggy Crust

For a crisper base, remove all packaging, follow the frozen pizza’s package directions and your air fryer oven’s manual, and check the pizza before the stated cook time ends. There is no dependable one-size-fits-all temperature or time: pizza thickness, oven design and rack position all matter.

Start with the pizza and oven instructions

Use the directions on the specific pizza package together with your air fryer oven manual. KitchenAid, for example, recommends following the frozen-pizza package directions; its countertop oven’s Pizza preset is 400°F (204°C) for 17 minutes, but that is a model-specific preset, not a universal air fryer setting. Its guidance also notes that thick-crust, self-rising and deep-dish pizzas may need longer. KitchenAid’s frozen-pizza guidance

  1. Remove plastic wrap, cardboard and every other piece of packaging before cooking. JACK’S says to remove the overwrap and cardboard; Dr. Oetker also instructs users to remove all packaging.
  2. Choose the rack position specified by your oven manual and the pizza maker’s directions. Air fryer ovens differ, so do not assume the highest or lowest rack is best.
  3. Use the cooking mode and temperature specified for your model and pizza. If the instructions give a conventional-oven method but no air-fryer method, consult the oven manual rather than treating another brand’s recipe as a conversion formula.

Why cook times differ

A thin hand-tossed pizza and a stuffed or rising-crust pizza do not cook at the same rate. The oven’s heat pattern and settings matter too: a pizza mode, convection setting or finishing broil can produce different results. Official examples illustrate the variation, but apply only to the named products and oven.

Dr. Oetker Canada Preheat to 425°F (218°C); cook for 9 minutes on the middle rack (rack 3 in its tested guidance), checking early. Its tested ranges vary by pizza and wattage. Dr. Oetker Ristorante pizza in an air fryer or toaster oven, as described for Canada. It also says the pizza must reach 160°F (71°C). Dr. Oetker Canada air-fryer instructions
KitchenAid countertop oven Pizza preset: 400°F (204°C) for 17 minutes. The specified KitchenAid oven preset; KitchenAid advises following the pizza package directions and says thicker crusts may need more time. KitchenAid frozen-pizza guidance

These examples are not interchangeable recipes. In particular, the Breville instructions include a finishing broil, while the Dr. Oetker directions specify a middle rack and differ by pizza and wattage. Use them to understand why crust style and appliance instructions matter, not as general conversions.

How to avoid a soft or soggy base

  • Keep the cooking setup consistent with the manual. Use the recommended rack and mode so hot air can circulate as the appliance is designed to circulate it.
  • Do not add foil by default. Dr. Oetker cautions that aluminum foil may lower crust quality in its guidance. Do not assume foil, a solid tray, a stone or a different rack will improve the result in every oven.
  • Check before the timer ends. For first-time use with a particular pizza and oven combination, Dr. Oetker recommends checking 1–2 minutes before the designated time. Air fryer ovens vary in size, design and wattage.
  • Look at the crust and toppings. A browned crust and melted cheese are useful visual cues, but follow the package’s doneness and food-safety directions as well.
  • Allow for thicker crusts. Rising, stuffed and deep-dish styles can take longer than thinner pizzas; do not extend cooking time automatically if the package or oven instructions indicate otherwise.

Doneness and safety

Follow the safety directions for the exact pizza you are cooking. Published targets are not uniform: Dr. Oetker Canada specifies 160°F (71°C) for its Ristorante air-fryer guidance, while JACK’S provides product-specific cooking information. Do not treat one brand’s temperature target as a universal rule for every frozen pizza. JACK’S product FAQ

Should you use a pizza stone or tray?

Only use an accessory if your oven manual and pizza directions support it. KitchenAid describes preheating a stone for its own countertop oven, while Dr. Oetker’s air-fryer directions use the oven rack and warn that foil may reduce crust quality. Those instructions do not establish that a stone, tray or accessory is necessary—or suitable—for other air fryer ovens.
