For a straightforward video job, open the file in HandBrake and choose an MP4 preset. Use FFmpeg when you need batch processing, stream selection or exact codec control. For audio conversion or extracting sound from a non-DRM-protected video, use Audacity with its optional FFmpeg library.
What an unsupported-format error actually means
A media file has more than an extension. The container is the outer file structure, such as MP4, MKV, MOV or AVI. Inside it are one or more streams: video, audio, subtitles, chapters and metadata. Each stream uses its own codec or data format. A television may accept an MKV container but reject the video codec inside it; a phone may decode H.264 video but reject an audio track, subtitle format or unusual pixel format.

Renaming movie.mkv to movie.mp4 changes only the label. It does not convert any stream and will not make an incompatible codec playable. Digital-rights management can also prevent import or playback even when the container and codecs are otherwise supported.

Choose the free tool that matches the job

Inspect the file before changing it
Start with the source application’s media-information panel if it has one. Record the container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, channel layout, subtitle tracks and whether the source is protected. The extension alone is not enough.

With FFmpeg installed, ffprobe -hide_banner input.mkv prints the container and stream details. For a machine-readable summary, use ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=format_name,duration:stream=index,codec_type,codec_name,width,height,pix_fmt,sample_rate,channels -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.mkv. Replace the filename with the actual source. The stream indexes shown by this command matter when you later select only a particular audio or subtitle track.
Questions to answer from the inspection
- Does the destination support the existing container?
- Does it decode the video codec, pixel format and frame characteristics?
- Does it decode the audio codec, sample rate and channel layout?
- Do you need every audio, subtitle and chapter stream, or only one?
- Is the source DRM-protected or otherwise restricted?
Remux or re-encode: the decision that controls quality and speed
A remux changes the container while copying the compressed streams unchanged. It is fast and lossless, but it works only when the destination accepts those codecs and stream types. A re-encode decodes and compresses the streams again into new codecs. It is required when the target cannot decode the source, takes longer and can reduce quality.

A remux can still fail: an MP4 container may not accept every subtitle type, attachment or unusual audio stream. If the command reports that a stream cannot be written, select compatible streams or re-encode the problem stream.
Convert video with HandBrake
HandBrake is the simplest graphical route when you want a playable video without writing commands. Its FFmpeg-based input support means it can open many containers and codecs, but the output still has to match the destination.

- Open the source. Launch HandBrake, choose File and select the video. Wait for the scan to finish so the title, duration and available tracks appear.
- Choose an output container. Select an MP4 preset when compatibility is the priority. MP4 is a container, not a codec guarantee, so continue checking the video and audio settings.
- Set video encoding. Choose H.264 when the target is an ordinary television, phone or general media player and you have no more specific compatibility requirement. Keep the original frame rate unless the destination requires another value. Use the quality control rather than repeatedly converting the same file; each re-encode can add loss.
- Choose the audio track. Keep the needed language and remove unwanted tracks to reduce size and avoid a device selecting an unsupported stream. AAC is a practical companion for H.264 in an MP4 compatibility output.
- Handle subtitles deliberately. Add the required subtitle track. Copying a subtitle may preserve it as a selectable track when the container and player support it. Burning subtitles into the picture makes them visible on players that cannot render the subtitle format, but they cannot then be turned off.
- Review the destination and name. Save to a location with enough free space and use a new filename so the original remains intact.
- Start the encode. Add the job to the queue if you have several files, then begin encoding. Re-encoding is slower than remuxing because every selected stream is decoded and compressed again.
- Test the result. Play the new file in the application or device that rejected the source. Check picture, sound, subtitles, language selection and seeking before deleting the original.
Convert video with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is the flexible choice when you need repeatable commands, batch processing or exact control. The examples below use the FFmpeg command-line program; ffprobe is included with FFmpeg distributions.
Make a broadly compatible MP4
ffmpeg -i input.ext -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4This decodes the source and creates H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4 container. The +faststart option places MP4 indexing information near the beginning of the file, which is useful when playback begins before the entire file has been read. Adjust quality or bitrate for the source and destination; there is no single setting that is optimal for every resolution, motion level or storage limit.
Try a lossless remux first
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4-map 0 asks FFmpeg to include all input streams. Use it only when the selected video, audio, subtitle and attachment streams are valid in MP4. If it fails or the output remains unsupported, inspect the streams and switch to selective mapping or re-encoding.

Select specific streams
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4This selects the first video stream and first audio stream. Stream numbers start at zero. Add another -map option for a second language, and use the inspection output to identify the indexes. Deliberately mapping streams prevents an unwanted commentary track or incompatible attachment from entering the output.
Extract audio without making a video
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:a:0 -c:a flac audio.flacFLAC is suitable when you want lossless audio in a file that supports it. For a WAV file commonly used in editing, use ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:a:0 -c:a pcm_s16le audio.wav. For a compressed delivery file, use an AAC or MP3 encoder available in your FFmpeg build and choose the bitrate appropriate for the destination. Converting a lossy source to another lossy format cannot restore detail that was already discarded.
Batch conversion
On systems with a POSIX-compatible shell, this pattern converts every MKV in the current directory to an MP4 with the same base name:

Shell quoting matters when filenames contain spaces or punctuation, and the output extension in the pattern must match the actual source extension. On Windows, use an equivalent batch or PowerShell loop and verify the quoting rules for that shell.

Convert or extract audio with Audacity
Audacity is useful when the destination is an audio file or when you need to trim, normalize or edit the soundtrack. Its optional FFmpeg library adds support for importing and exporting formats such as M4A and WMA. The manual specifically describes importing audio from most non-DRM-protected video files or DVDs; protected material may not import.
- Install the optional FFmpeg library. In Audacity, open the preferences or settings area and locate the Libraries section. Use the installation or locate option shown for your version, then confirm that FFmpeg is detected.
- Import the source. Use File → Import → Audio and select the video or audio file. If the file contains several audio streams, choose the required one when Audacity presents the import options.
- Edit only if needed. Trim unwanted sections, remove silence or make other changes before export. Editing does not change the original file unless you explicitly overwrite it.
- Export to the needed format. Use File → Export Audio. Choose WAV or AIFF for lossless editing interchange, FLAC for lossless storage, or AAC/MP3 when the destination specifically requires a compressed file.
- Check the export. Reopen the exported file or play it in the target application. Confirm that the sample rate, channels, start and end points and metadata are as expected.
If Audacity cannot import the source, check that the FFmpeg library is installed and recognized, then verify that the file is not DRM-protected. FFmpeg itself may be a better choice for a simple extraction with no editing.
Use a practical compatibility target
NASA PDS guidance documents MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio as a practical compatibility target. It is not a promise that every television or phone accepts every H.264 profile, frame size, audio channel layout or subtitle type. Check the target’s manual when it specifies limits, and keep the output conservative when no details are available.

Subtitles, metadata and multiple tracks
Conversion can silently discard more than the picture and main soundtrack. A file may contain several language tracks, commentary, closed captions, chapters, cover art or font attachments. Inspect these streams before encoding and decide what the destination can use.

-mapoptions to include only the desired video and audio streams or to retain multiple languages intentionally. - Copy subtitles only when the destination container and player support their format. If the player cannot render them, burn them into the video during a HandBrake encode or export a compatible subtitle file.
- Check chapter and metadata options after conversion. Some container changes cannot carry every source item unchanged.
- Keep the original beside the converted copy until playback and track selection have been verified.
Troubleshoot a converted file that still will not play
- Confirm that the output is really new. Open its media-information panel or run
ffprobe -hide_banner output.mp4. If it still reports the original incompatible codec, only the extension may have changed or the wrong file may have been tested. - Check the container and codecs separately. An MP4 label does not guarantee H.264 video or AAC audio. Verify both streams and compare them with the target’s requirements.
- Remove extra streams. Test a file containing one video and one audio stream. An unsupported subtitle, attachment or second audio stream can prevent some players from opening the complete file.
- Check pixel format and audio characteristics. A target may reject an otherwise familiar codec because of its pixel format, channel layout or sample rate. Re-encode the affected stream with conservative settings or follow the device’s published limits.
- Test subtitles separately. First play the video without subtitles. Then add a compatible selectable subtitle or burn it in if the player cannot render the original.
- Rule out DRM and corruption. If neither HandBrake nor FFmpeg can read the source, verify that it is not protected and that it plays correctly in the application that created or supplied it.
- Test locally and on the real target. A desktop player may support more codecs than a television, game console or phone. Copy the final file to the device that originally rejected it and test seeking, audio, subtitles and resume playback.
Quality, time and storage trade-offs
Remuxing is usually the quickest path because compressed streams are copied rather than decoded and recompressed. It does not reduce quality, but it cannot solve a codec problem. Re-encoding is slower, consumes processing time and can produce a larger or smaller file depending on the settings. Repeatedly converting the same source compounds generation loss, so return to the original whenever you need another output.
Keep enough free storage for the original and the new file at the same time. A conversion can fail near the end if the destination volume fills, leaving an incomplete output. For important recordings, create a short test encode first, verify it on the target and then process the full file or batch.
A repeatable conversion checklist
- Identify the real container and every stream with media information or
ffprobe. - Confirm whether the target needs a remux or a codec-changing re-encode.
- Keep the original file and work under a new output name.
- Use HandBrake for a guided video workflow, FFmpeg for control and batches, or Audacity plus FFmpeg for audio work.
- For a general compatibility attempt, use MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, while checking the target’s own limits.
- Select audio languages and subtitles deliberately instead of accepting every stream blindly.
- Do not expect a renamed extension to perform conversion or DRM removal.
- Play the result on the device or application that rejected the source before archiving or deleting anything.
Bottom line
Begin by identifying the container and codecs, then choose the least destructive operation that solves the problem. Remux when the destination already supports the streams; re-encode only what the target cannot decode. HandBrake provides the easiest free video interface, FFmpeg offers the broadest control and automation, and Audacity with FFmpeg handles practical audio import, extraction and export from non-DRM-protected sources.
