Convert the steam rate to kilograms per second, find the inlet-to-outlet enthalpy drop for the actual steam conditions, and multiply by turbine and generator efficiencies. In symbols, electrical power is mass flow in kg/s × enthalpy drop in kJ/kg × combined efficiency. Tonnes per day by itself cannot determine kW or MW because pressure, temperature (or quality), exhaust pressure and equipment losses determine how much of the steam’s energy is available.

The direct conversion from tonnes per day to kW

Steam flow must be expressed in kilograms per second before it is used with a specific enthalpy difference. One metric tonne is 1,000 kg and one day is 86,400 seconds, so:

m_dot (kg/s) = steam production (tonnes/day) × 1,000 ÷ 86,400

That gives the convenient factor:

1 tonne/day = 0.011574 kg/s.

Once the mass flow is known, obtain the inlet specific enthalpy, h_in, and outlet specific enthalpy, h_out, from validated steam tables or property software. The available specific work is:

Δh (kJ/kg) = h_in − h_out

Because a kilojoule per second is a kilowatt, the ideal enthalpy power is:

P_ideal (kW) = m_dot (kg/s) × Δh (kJ/kg)

Real equipment produces less than that ideal value. A practical shaft estimate is:

P_shaft (kW) = m_dot × Δh × η_turbine

Electrical output after the mechanical drive and generator is:

P_electric (kW) = P_shaft × η_mechanical × η_generator

If the turbine, mechanical and generator losses are represented by one combined efficiency, use:

P_electric (kW) = m_dot × Δh × η_combined

Divide kilowatts by 1,000 to express the result in megawatts. Keep the efficiency as a decimal: 75% is 0.75, not 75.

Why a tonnes-per-day figure is not enough

Two plants can process the same daily steam mass and produce very different electrical outputs. Steam entering at a high pressure and temperature may have a large usable enthalpy drop before it reaches the exhaust condition. Steam that must leave at a relatively high process pressure has less room to expand. Turbine size, load, internal efficiency, generator efficiency and auxiliary consumption then determine how much of the theoretical work reaches the electrical terminals.

The International Electrotechnical Commission defines steam rate as the ratio of initial steam flow to power output, while thermal efficiency relates power output to external heat input. Those definitions make clear that a mass rate is not itself a power rating. AIChE describes turbine power in the same way: mass flow is multiplied by the enthalpy difference between inlet and exhaust, then adjusted for isentropic and equipment losses.

  • Steam production basis: metric tonnes per day, and whether the value is an average, a design maximum or a short-term peak.
  • Inlet pressure and temperature, or pressure and steam quality where the inlet is wet.
  • Outlet pressure and temperature, or outlet pressure and quality. For a back-pressure turbine, this is normally the required process-steam pressure; for a condensing turbine, it is the condenser-side condition.
  • Turbine isentropic or overall turbine efficiency at the expected operating load.
  • Mechanical transmission efficiency and generator efficiency, unless a supplier provides a tested combined value.
  • Whether the requested result is gross generator output, net export after auxiliaries, or shaft power.

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Define the steam-flow number

Write the flow as a metric value in tonnes per day. If the plant reports tonnes per hour, convert it first: multiply tonnes per hour by 24 to obtain tonnes per day, or divide the hourly value by 3,600 after converting tonnes to kilograms. Do not mix metric tonnes with short tons or imperial tons.

  2. Convert daily mass to kg/s

Multiply tonnes per day by 1,000 and divide by 86,400. For a direct shortcut, multiply tonnes per day by 0.011574. Retain several decimal places during the calculation and round only the final power result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Identify the thermodynamic state at the inlet

Use the measured or specified pressure and temperature to locate the inlet state in a steam-property source. If the steam is wet, pressure and quality are needed rather than temperature alone. Record the resulting h_in in kJ/kg.

  4. Identify the expansion endpoint

Use the actual exhaust or process pressure and temperature (or quality) to obtain h_out. A process user may require a minimum pressure, so the outlet condition cannot be selected solely to maximize electricity. Record the enthalpy basis and whether it represents a design, rated or measured condition.

  5. Subtract enthalpies

Calculate Δh = h_in − h_out. A negative result indicates that the states have been entered in the wrong order or that the proposed outlet is not a lower-energy state.

  6. Calculate ideal enthalpy power

Multiply kg/s by kJ/kg. The units reduce to kJ/s, which is kW. This is the maximum energy-rate estimate before turbine and generator losses; it is not a guaranteed electrical rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  7. Apply turbine efficiency

Multiply ideal power by the turbine efficiency appropriate to the expected load. If a performance map gives efficiency at several loads, use the value at the actual steam flow rather than the peak value.

  8. Apply mechanical and generator efficiencies

Multiply shaft power by mechanical efficiency and generator efficiency. If the equipment documentation supplies one combined efficiency, apply that once and do not multiply by the individual values again.

  9. Subtract auxiliaries when net export is required

Fans, pumps, lubrication systems, controls and other plant loads consume part of the generated electricity. Net electrical output is gross generator output minus those auxiliary loads. If auxiliary consumption is not known, label the result gross or state that net output is not established.

Finding enthalpy values correctly

Steam tables report specific enthalpy in kJ/kg, the same energy-per-mass unit required by the power equation. Use a consistent reference and state definition for both inlet and outlet values. Validated software is acceptable when it uses a recognized steam formulation and allows pressure, temperature and quality inputs; a table or calculator should not be treated as authoritative if its pressure units, temperature scale or wet-steam conventions are unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For superheated steam, pressure and temperature normally identify the state. For saturated steam, pressure (or saturation temperature) identifies the saturated-liquid and saturated-vapor properties. For a wet mixture, quality indicates the vapor mass fraction and allows the mixture enthalpy to be determined between the saturated-liquid and saturated-vapor values. The outlet of a condensing expansion can become wet, so using a superheated-steam enthalpy there would overstate the available work.

Keep gauge and absolute pressure distinct. Property tables generally require absolute pressure; a gauge reading must be converted using the local atmospheric-pressure basis before lookup. Also keep Celsius and Fahrenheit conversions separate from pressure conversion. A unit error at this stage can change the enthalpy drop by far more than a rounding difference in the mass-flow conversion.

Worked example: 100 tonnes per day

Assume 100 tonnes/day of steam, an inlet-to-outlet enthalpy drop of 800 kJ/kg, and a combined turbine, mechanical and generator efficiency of 75%. The enthalpy drop and efficiency are illustrative assumptions; they must be replaced with values from the actual steam conditions and equipment data.

  1. Mass flow: 100 × 1,000 ÷ 86,400 = 1.1574 kg/s.

  2. Ideal enthalpy power: 1.1574 × 800 = 925.9 kW.

  3. Electrical estimate: 925.9 × 0.75 = 694.4 kW.

  4. In megawatts: 694.4 ÷ 1,000 = 0.694 MW.

Thus, under those stated assumptions, 100 tonnes/day would produce about 694 kW gross before any separately identified auxiliary load. It is not a universal output for 100 tonnes/day; changing the enthalpy drop or efficiency changes the result proportionally.

What one tonne per day produces under different assumptions

The table shows the sensitivity for exactly 1 tonne/day. Each cell is electrical power after the listed combined efficiency. These are calculation cases, not measured turbine guarantees.

Enthalpy drop (kJ/kg) 60% combined efficiency 75% combined efficiency 90% combined efficiency
500 3.472 kW 4.340 kW 5.208 kW
800 5.555 kW 6.944 kW 8.333 kW
1,200 8.333 kW 10.417 kW 12.500 kW

To scale the table, multiply a cell by the tonnes-per-day rate. For example, the 800 kJ/kg and 75% case gives 6.944 kW per tonne/day; 100 tonnes/day gives approximately 694.4 kW, the same as the worked example. A plant with a smaller enthalpy drop, such as one that must retain high-pressure process steam, will fall toward the lower rows even if its daily mass is unchanged.

Efficiency: what to use and what not to double-count

The U.S. Department of Energy handbook DOE-HDBK-1012/1-92 gives broad indicative turbine figures: small turbines are generally 60% to 80% efficient, while large turbines are generally about 90% efficient. Those ranges are not a guarantee for a particular machine, operating point or definition of efficiency. A supplier’s test data or performance curve is preferable.

Several efficiencies may appear in a specification:

  • Isentropic turbine efficiency compares actual turbine work with the ideal isentropic expansion work. It is used to adjust the enthalpy drop for internal aerodynamic and thermodynamic losses.
  • Mechanical efficiency accounts for bearings, seals, couplings and the transmission between turbine and generator.
  • Generator efficiency converts mechanical shaft power to electrical output.
  • Combined efficiency may already include two or all three categories. Confirm the definition before multiplying.

Do not apply a turbine efficiency to an enthalpy drop that has already been reduced using a vendor’s actual expansion result, and do not apply a combined efficiency after separately applying its component efficiencies. Those practices count the same losses twice.

Back-pressure and condensing turbines

The choice of outlet condition is often the largest practical decision in a steam-to-power calculation.

Comparison point Back-pressure turbine Condensing turbine
Exhaust condition Discharges at a pressure needed by a process or heating network. Expands toward a condenser pressure below the useful process-steam pressure.
Available enthalpy drop Usually limited by the required process pressure. Can be larger because expansion continues to a lower pressure.
Electrical potential Lower than a comparable deep expansion when inlet conditions are identical, but it can recover useful heat. Potentially higher electrical output, subject to condenser and turbine losses.
Heat service Preserves high-temperature exhaust steam for process use. Rejects more heat to the condenser and may not supply the required process steam.
Correct calculation Use the enthalpy at the required process outlet pressure and state. Use the enthalpy at the condenser-side outlet pressure and state.

A lower exhaust pressure does not automatically make a condensing turbine the better project. If the site needs the exhaust steam for a process, the value of that heat and the required pressure must be retained in the design. Calculate both cases with their own outlet enthalpies, then compare electrical output, net auxiliary demand and the heat service that remains available.

Gross power, net power and the UK efficiency relationship

The UK Energy Technology List gives the dimensional relationship for a back-pressure turbine as: “Net Electrical Efficiency (%) = Net Electrical Output (kWe) / (Inlet Enthalpy (kJ/kg) * Inlet Mass Flow Rate (kg/s)).” The mass-flow unit is essential: multiplying inlet enthalpy in kJ/kg by flow in kg/s produces kJ/s, which is kW. When using this relationship, follow the list’s stated efficiency definition and distinguish net electrical output from gross generator output.

In practical reporting, label every result explicitly:

  • Ideal enthalpy power: no turbine, generator or auxiliary losses applied.
  • Shaft power: turbine work after the stated turbine efficiency, before generator conversion.
  • Gross electrical output: generator terminals before plant auxiliaries.
  • Net electrical output: gross output less the defined auxiliary consumption and other deductions required by the reporting standard.

Useful reverse calculations

Steam required for a target electrical output

Rearrange the combined-efficiency equation:

m_dot (kg/s) = target power (kW) ÷ (Δh × η_combined)

Then convert kg/s to tonnes/day by multiplying by 86,400 and dividing by 1,000. Under the illustrative 800 kJ/kg and 75% assumptions, each tonne/day yields 6.944 kW, so 1 MW would require approximately 144 tonnes/day. That result changes directly if either the enthalpy drop or efficiency changes.

Power from an hourly steam rate

If the only available figure is tonnes per hour, convert it directly to mass flow with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

m_dot (kg/s) = tonnes/hour × 1,000 ÷ 3,600

Alternatively, multiply the hourly rate by 24 to obtain tonnes/day and use the daily factor. Both routes must produce the same kg/s value.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using tonnes per day as if it were kg/s

Multiplying an enthalpy drop by 100 tonnes/day without the 1,000/86,400 conversion creates a massive unit error. Write the units beside every number and verify that the intermediate result is in kg/s.

Assuming a fixed kW per tonne of steam

A single rule of thumb hides the inlet and outlet conditions. Use a fixed factor only when the enthalpy drop and efficiency are explicitly fixed for the same equipment and operating range.

Using boiler heat input instead of turbine enthalpy drop

Boiler duty describes external heat supplied to create steam; turbine work depends on the enthalpy difference between the turbine inlet and outlet. Substituting boiler heat input for Δh does not calculate turbine power.

Ignoring the required exhaust pressure

Selecting an unrealistically low outlet pressure exaggerates the enthalpy drop and may eliminate the process heat the plant needs. Set the outlet state from the process or condenser requirement.

Mixing gross and net results

A generator-terminal estimate is not the same as export to the grid. State whether auxiliaries are included and subtract them when a net figure is requested.

Applying an efficiency twice

Check whether the quoted percentage is turbine-only, generator-only or combined. Apply each loss once.

Rounding the mass flow too early

Rounding 0.011574 kg/s to 0.01 kg/s before multiplying can materially distort small systems. Keep at least four significant figures through the intermediate calculations.

Minimum data checklist for a plant estimate

  • Metric steam rate and its time basis.
  • Inlet absolute pressure.
  • Inlet temperature or quality.
  • Outlet absolute pressure.
  • Outlet temperature or quality.
  • Inlet and outlet enthalpies from a recognized property source.
  • Turbine efficiency at the expected load.
  • Mechanical and generator efficiencies, or a documented combined efficiency.
  • Auxiliary electrical demand if net output is required.
  • Whether the turbine is back-pressure or condensing and what process-heat obligation applies.

With those inputs, the calculation is transparent and auditable: show the mass-flow conversion, both enthalpies, the enthalpy drop, each efficiency, and the gross-to-net deductions. If any of those data are missing, report a range or an illustrative scenario rather than presenting one number as the plant’s guaranteed output.

Key takeaway

The reliable conversion is not a tonnes-per-day shortcut. Convert the steam to 0.011574 kg/s for every tonne/day, obtain the real enthalpy drop from the inlet and outlet states, and apply clearly defined turbine, mechanical, generator and auxiliary factors. For the illustrative case of 100 tonnes/day, an 800 kJ/kg drop and 75% combined efficiency produce 694.4 kW, but the actual result can only be established from the plant’s steam conditions and equipment performance.
