How to Convert Podcast Audio Files for an FFmpeg YouTube Live Playlist

Convert each podcast episode to a compatible audio format, build an FFmpeg workflow that adds a video layer, and test the result in YouTube Live before relying on it. YouTube lists AAC and MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo. A playlist of multiple episodes is not guaranteed to work with one universal FFmpeg command: file formats, stream layouts and timestamps matter.

What you need for a podcast audio livestream

  • FFmpeg installed on the computer or server that will send the stream.
  • Podcast episode files you have permission to use and stream.
  • A visual layer: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists a video codec as well as audio, so an audio-only source needs accompanying video, such as a static image encoded as video.
  • A YouTube Live stream key and server address, available through YouTube Studio when you set up a live stream.
  • A stable internet connection for the duration of the broadcast, unless you use a cloud service to run it.

FFmpeg reads, filters or transcodes media according to the options supplied; changing a filename extension alone does not convert its codec. Its command structure is ffmpeg [global options] {[input options] -i input} ... {[output options] output}. Options placed before an input apply to that input; output options belong before the output destination. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Choose audio settings and convert an episode

Use a YouTube-compatible audio codec

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For stereo, it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. These are recommended settings, not a guarantee that every file or encoder command will work without a test. You can keep an existing file if it already has compatible audio and behaves correctly in a test stream; conversion is useful when you need to standardize a collection.

FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder is documented, but the encoders enabled in a particular installed build can differ. Check the build before choosing AAC:

ffmpeg -encoders

Example: convert one episode to AAC

This example assumes the input file is readable by your FFmpeg build and you want stereo AAC in an M4A output. Adjust the input and output paths to your files:

ffmpeg -i "episode-01.mp3" -c:a aac -ar 44100 -ac 2 -b:a 128k "episode-01.m4a"

The output options select the audio encoder, sample rate, channel count and bitrate; the .m4a extension identifies the intended output container. If the command reports that the AAC encoder is unavailable, use an available encoder shown by ffmpeg -encoders, or choose MP3 if supported and suitable. FFmpeg documents its audio options and AAC encoder in its all-options reference.

Zoom H4 Essential Handheld Recorder for Musicians, Podcasters & Filmmakers
  • CAPTURE BIGGER PROJECTS WITH CONFIDENCE – Record music, interviews, podcasts, video audio, and live performances with a 4-track recorder that helps you capture more of the moment without worrying about distorted takes.
  • PLUG IN THE MICS AND GEAR YOU NEED – Use the built-in stereo microphones, connect external mics or instruments, or plug into a mixer or soundboard with two XLR/TRS inputs.
  • CLEAR SOUND FOR CREATIVE WORK – Capture detailed audio for songs, videos, podcasts, interviews, and field recordings, whether you’re recording quiet dialogue, loud performances, or anything in between.
  • RECORD TO YOUR DEVICE AND YOUR SD CARD – Connect to your phone, tablet, or computer with USB-C for recording or streaming, while also saving a backup directly to SD card.
  • EASIER TO USE FOR MORE CREATORS – Spoken menu guidance helps make recording more accessible for visually impaired users and easier to navigate for anyone who wants a more guided experience.

Do not assume a stereo source can be made meaningfully stereo by setting -ac 2; that setting requests two output channels, but it cannot restore information absent from the source. Listen to the converted file and verify that the beginning, ending and channel balance are as expected.

Prepare files for a multi-episode playlist

Check consistency before combining episodes

Before building a continuous playlist, inspect the files for differences that can complicate concatenation or playback: audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, container and duration. Standardizing files to the same audio format can reduce incompatibilities, but it does not prove that timestamps or playlist transitions will work in every FFmpeg build.

  • Use descriptive filenames and keep the intended play order clear.
  • Confirm every file opens and plays through its full duration.
  • Listen at episode boundaries for abrupt cuts, silence or unexpected level changes.
  • Keep original recordings so you can redo conversion without quality loss from repeatedly transcoding the same file.

Do not rely on a universal concat or loop command

FFmpeg supports many input and output workflows, but the official reference does not establish one playlist-and-indefinite-loop command that works for every collection. Whether a concat-list or looping approach behaves correctly depends on details such as matching codecs, stream layouts, containers and timestamps. Treat any command you find as specific to its assumptions and installed build; test it with your own episode files rather than scheduling a long broadcast immediately.

Send the stream to YouTube Live

Use RTMPS for the basic workflow

YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder setup includes a video codec—H.264, H.265 or AV1—as well as audio. An audio podcast therefore needs an encoded visual stream too. A still-image video can be a practical visual layer, but the precise FFmpeg image-input recipe depends on the files and build you use and is not a universal playlist solution.

Keep the stream key private. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream, copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder, then enter them in the streaming application or command you have configured. Do not publish a key in a command example, screenshot, public playlist file or support post; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.

Test and monitor before you depend on it

  1. Start a short test using the same episode files, visual layer, encoder settings and network you intend to use.
  2. Check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming stream and its stream-health status.
  3. Listen to the stream as a viewer: confirm the audio is present, intelligible and synchronized with the visual.
  4. Check episode transitions and let the test run long enough to reveal interruptions or unexpected stops.
  5. Only schedule or rely on the playlist after the test passes; monitor stream health during the live session.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event and monitoring stream health. Settings that are listed as recommendations still need validation with your actual files and encoder. See YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS live encoder settings.

RTMP/RTMPS versus HLS

For a straightforward FFmpeg-to-YouTube workflow, keep the protocol and its requirements clear. HLS is an alternative ingest route, not a drop-in switch for an RTMP output command.

Route Audio guidance Packaging and delivery Latency
RTMP/RTMPS YouTube lists AAC or MP3; it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo. Encoder setup includes a video codec as well as audio; YouTube recommends RTMPS. YouTube’s HLS guidance describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP.
HLS YouTube lists AAC, AC3 and EAC3; it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo. Requires TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no byte ranges, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS. Higher than RTMP, according to YouTube’s HLS guidance.

See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance for its separate packaging requirements. Do not apply these HLS requirements to a basic RTMP/RTMPS command.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Only stream podcast recordings, music, artwork and other material you have the rights or permissions to use. A file being available online or included in a podcast does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it on YouTube. Review YouTube’s live-streaming and copyright requirements for your channel and territory before going live; this guide does not establish that any particular episode is cleared.

Zoom H1 Essential Recorder for Musicians, Podcasters & Content Creators
  • CREATE CONTENT WITH BETTER SOUND – Capture clear stereo audio for videos, reels, tutorials, voiceovers, behind-the-scenes clips, and other content that needs more polished sound than your camera or phone alone.
  • READY WHEN INSPIRATION HITS – Record songwriting sessions, rehearsals, acoustic performances, lessons, jam sessions, and live music with detailed sound that is easy to capture in the moment.
  • CLEAR VOICES FOR PODCASTS AND INTERVIEWS – Record conversations, podcast episodes, lectures, meetings, notes, and interviews with natural stereo sound that helps voices come through clearly.
  • CAPTURE REAL-WORLD SOUND – Record ambience, nature, room tone, sound effects, travel audio, and everyday environments for video, music production, creative projects, and documentation.
  • PLUG IN FOR STREAMING AND CALLS – Connect via USB-C and use it as a microphone for livestreams, remote meetings, video calls, voiceovers, podcasts, and desktop or mobile recording.

Also consider whether a continuous rebroadcast made primarily from prerecorded material fits YouTube’s current channel and monetization policies. Eligibility and enforcement depend on YouTube’s rules and the specifics of a channel; do not assume that converting or looping content makes it original or monetizable. Check YouTube’s current policy pages in Studio before planning around monetization.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • FFmpeg says the encoder is unavailable: Run ffmpeg -encoders and choose an audio codec the installed build supports, or use a build that includes the required encoder.
  • YouTube receives video but no sound: Verify that the output includes an audio stream, that its codec is AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, and that the selected input actually contains audio. Test by listening in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • The stream is rejected or unhealthy: Recheck the server URL and stream key, confirm the output uses the intended protocol, and verify the video and audio encoders and settings. Use YouTube’s stream-health information rather than assuming a successful FFmpeg process means viewers receive a healthy stream.
  • Episodes fail at transitions or stop unexpectedly: Check for mismatched codec, channel layout, sample rate, container or timestamps. Try a short test with a smaller subset, then standardize the files and test again. No single concat/loop pattern is guaranteed for arbitrary collections.
  • Audio levels change between episodes: Compare and listen to the source and converted files. The conversion example changes encoding parameters; it does not normalize perceived loudness. Prepare levels with an appropriate audio workflow before streaming if episodes are inconsistent.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Reset or replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration that uses it.
  • HLS output is not accepted as RTMP: Confirm which ingest protocol you selected. HLS needs its own segmented TS playlist and HTTPS delivery behavior; changing only an RTMP command’s URL is not enough.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs prerecorded video playing continuously, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded video, not a camera feed, and supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
