Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse a conversion method that does not resample the raster. For a single PNG, ImageMagick’s magick input.png output.pdf writes the image to a PDF without a resize operation. Keep the original width and height in pixels, and treat page size, DPI (density), and printer scaling as separate settings. A PDF page can be larger or smaller physically while the embedded PNG still contains exactly the same pixels.
What “image size” means in a PDF
“Size” can describe three different things:
- Pixel dimensions: the raster width and height, such as 4,000 × 3,000 pixels. This is the image data you want to preserve.
- Physical placement: the width and height on a PDF page, usually expressed in points, inches or millimetres.
- Print output: the size produced by a printer after its scaling rules are applied.
Resampling, resizing, thumbnail generation and cropping change pixel dimensions. Density (often called DPI or PPI) changes how many pixels are assigned to a physical inch; it does not add or remove pixels. A page or canvas setting changes the PDF’s boundaries and placement, not the source raster, unless the export process also downsamples or resizes it.
Therefore, verify pixel width and height in the embedded image, then check the PDF page dimensions separately. A different page size is not evidence that pixels were lost.
Fastest reliable method: ImageMagick
Convert one PNG
magick input.png output.pdf
This is the safest default for one file because it does not request -resize, -thumbnail, crop or another geometry operation. Replace the filenames with paths appropriate to your operating system. If the source is in another directory, quote paths containing spaces:

magick "photos/original scan.png" "exports/original scan.pdf"
Before running the command, record the source dimensions. ImageMagick can report width and height with the %w and %h format escapes:
magick identify -format "%w x %h pixelsn" input.png
Create a multi-page PDF from PNG files
Pass files in the intended page order. Shell glob ordering can surprise you when numbers are not zero-padded, so names such as page-001.png, page-002.png and page-010.png are safer than page-1.png, page-2.png and page-10.png.
magick image-*.png output.pdf
For separate output files, the ImageMagick sequence pattern uses +adjoin; adapted for PNG input, it can look like this:
magick image-*.png +adjoin page-%d.pdf
Inspect the resulting page count and ordering before distributing the document. Do not add a geometry option merely to force every page onto Letter or A4: that can rescale the raster.
Set a physical print size without changing pixels
Use density for intended inches or millimetres
If a print specification requires a particular physical size, choose a density deliberately. For example, a 3,000-pixel-wide image interpreted at 300 DPI is placed at 10 inches wide (3,000 ÷ 300). At 150 DPI, the same pixels are placed at 20 inches. The file still has 3,000 pixels in both cases.
magick -density 300 input.png output.pdf
Density controls the physical interpretation of the raster. It is not a command to “make” the image 300 DPI by inventing detail.
Define a page or canvas when required
ImageMagick’s -page option defines the PDF canvas and can be combined with -density when you need a known page geometry. This is useful for a form, label or press specification, but tight page bounds may cause an oversized image to be reduced to fit. After conversion, inspect the embedded dimensions rather than assuming the command preserved them.

magick -density 300 input.png -page 2550x3300 output.pdf
The numbers in this example describe canvas pixels at the selected density; choose values that match your actual page requirement. If preserving the source raster is more important than fitting a fixed page, omit the fixed page geometry and let the image define the page.
Adobe Acrobat: turn off downsampling
Conversion settings
In Acrobat’s image-to-PDF or PDF creation settings, disable downsampling or resampling. Downsampling combines samples to reduce resolution; leaving it enabled can lower the effective raster resolution even when the PDF looks acceptable at a glance. Keep compression choices consistent with your quality needs, and avoid any setting described as reducing pixels per inch.
Print the PDF at its native physical size
When sending the finished PDF to a printer, choose Actual Size or 100%. Do not choose Fit, Shrink oversized pages or a custom percentage if the paper output must match the PDF page. Print scaling changes the physical output; it does not prove that the embedded image was resized.
LibreOffice PDF export
LibreOffice’s PDF export dialog includes an option to resample or down-size images to a lower pixels-per-inch value. Leave that reduction disabled when the source pixel dimensions must survive unchanged. If you place the PNG in a Writer or Draw document, avoid dragging it to a new size unless you intentionally want different placement; document layout and image resampling are separate decisions.
Reopen the exported PDF and inspect the embedded image. Visual sharpness alone is not a sufficient test because a viewer may zoom, smooth or cache the display.

- Record the source: run
magick identify -format "%w x %h pixelsn" input.pngand save the result with the conversion notes. - Inspect the PDF’s embedded raster: use a PDF/image inspection utility that reports the image object’s width and height. Compare both numbers with the source, not just the aspect ratio.
- Inspect page bounds separately: ImageMagick’s
%Pformat escape reports page dimensions. A changed page size is acceptable when the embedded width and height match. - Check print settings: in Acrobat’s print dialog, confirm Actual Size or 100% and ensure no fit-to-page rule is active.
- Check appearance: compare transparency, color profile and compression. Matching dimensions do not guarantee identical color or alpha handling.
For a quick post-conversion check, render the PDF at a known scale and compare edges, fine text and transparent areas with the PNG. Use the embedded-object report as the authoritative pixel test.
Why PNG-to-PDF conversions appear resized
A Letter or A4 template was applied
A layout or print dialog may fit the image to a standard page. That changes placement and may trigger resampling, depending on the exporter. Check the embedded object dimensions and turn off automatic fit or downsampling.

A resize command was added
Options such as -resize, -thumbnail, a forced geometry, or a crop directly alter raster dimensions. Preserving aspect ratio is not enough: a proportional resize still changes both width and height in pixels.
DPI was mistaken for pixel dimensions
Changing DPI can make a PDF report a different physical width while retaining every pixel. Decide whether your requirement concerns pixels, printed inches, or both, and verify each property with the appropriate test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The viewer or printer scaled the display
PDF viewers commonly zoom to page width, and printers commonly fit pages to their printable area. These behaviors affect what you see or what comes out of the printer, not necessarily the embedded image.
Transparency, color and compression considerations
PNG can contain an alpha channel, indexed colors and metadata that a PDF workflow handles differently. A conversion can preserve width and height while changing transparent pixels to a page background, converting color profiles or applying lossless or lossy compression. If transparency matters, inspect transparent edges against both a light and dark background. If color is critical, compare a color-managed PDF viewer and keep the intended profile in the workflow.
Do not judge quality solely by the PDF file size. A smaller file may reflect compression or metadata removal rather than a reduction in pixel dimensions, while a large file can still contain a resampled image.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is designed for capturing a URL as a clean PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF—not for converting a local PNG file directly. If your source image is presented on a web page and you need a PDF capture of that page, its API avoids configuring a headless browser:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/image-page -o shot.pdf
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for response and PDF options. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
It also provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools. Free accounts include 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. The service supports PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF output, but for strict pixel-for-pixel conversion of a local PNG, ImageMagick or a desktop PDF exporter remains the appropriate workflow.

The PDF is one page, but the image looks smaller
Check page dimensions and density first. The image may be unchanged but placed at a lower physical scale. Set the intended density or page geometry, then verify the embedded pixel dimensions.
The embedded dimensions are lower than the PNG
Find and remove every resize, thumbnail, crop, fit, downsample or lower-PPI setting in the command or exporter. Reconvert from the original PNG rather than from an already exported PDF.
Pages are in the wrong order
Inspect shell glob expansion and rename files with zero-padded numbers. For a batch, list the exact input filenames explicitly when ordering is important.
The image is clipped
The page canvas may be smaller than the image, or an offset may place part of the raster outside the page. Remove the forced -page geometry or enlarge the canvas, then check page bounds and embedded dimensions.
Transparency or colors changed
Inspect alpha and color-profile handling in the exporter. Test a representative transparent image and compare it in a color-managed viewer; matching dimensions alone cannot correct a changed background or profile.

Printed output does not match the PDF
Set Actual Size or 100% in the print dialog and disable fit or shrink options. Also account for the printer’s unprintable margins: a printer may be unable to place a full-bleed page even when the PDF itself is correct.

Choosing the right workflow
| Workflow | Pixel-preservation control | Physical sizing | Batch or multi-page support | Verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ImageMagick | Explicit; omit geometry and downsampling operators | -density and -page |
Strong command-line control | ImageMagick and PDF inspection tools |
| Adobe Acrobat | Disable downsampling/resampling | Conversion and print controls | Convenient GUI workflows | Reopen PDF and inspect image object |
| LibreOffice | Disable lower-PPI resampling | Document page layout | Useful when images are part of a document | Reopen PDF and compare embedded dimensions |
Use ImageMagick for repeatable scripts and batches, Acrobat when a GUI and print-oriented controls are preferable, and LibreOffice when the PNG is part of a composed document. In every case, the deciding test is the embedded image’s width and height, not the apparent size on screen.
FAQ
Can a PDF have the same pixels but a different page size?
Yes. Pixel dimensions belong to the embedded raster; page dimensions describe the PDF canvas. Verify both independently.
Does converting PNG to PDF always keep transparency?
No. Alpha handling depends on the exporter and PDF workflow. Test transparent edges and the chosen background before relying on it.
Will changing DPI improve image quality?
No. Density changes physical placement. It cannot create detail that is absent from the PNG.
Is a smaller PDF proof that the image was resized?
No. Compression, color conversion and metadata removal can change file size without changing pixel dimensions. Inspect the embedded image object.
