What conversion does—and what it does not
Converting a phone recording produces a video file. It does not, by itself, start a YouTube Live broadcast: going live requires a separate live path that sends a real-time feed to YouTube. YouTube’s standard aspect ratio on a computer is 16:9, but its player adapts to other aspect ratios, so landscape is useful for a conventional widescreen presentation rather than a universal upload requirement. Choose the landscape layout and resolution
Use a 16:9 canvas. YouTube identifies 1920×1080 as a standard 1080p size and 1280×720 as a standard 720p size. Pick 1080p when the source has enough detail; 720p can be a better fit for lower-detail footage or a live workflow with less available upload capacity. A separate live encoder’s bitrate should suit the chosen resolution, frame rate, and actual connection. YouTube resolution guidance and its live encoder settings provide platform recommendations.

Place it on the 16:9 canvas without changing its proportions. If its aspect ratio differs from 16:9, choose whether to crop a little or leave a designed background around it; do not stretch the picture to fill the frame.

If the phone recording is vertical

Choose based on where the subject moves and whether the full frame matters. YouTube advises against embedding padding bars in the video because the player adapts to the video’s aspect ratio; a designed background is different from simply adding black bars. Convert and check the MP4
- Inspect the original. Note its orientation, dimensions, frame rate, and whether it has audio. Keep an untouched copy before editing.
- Create a 16:9 project. Choose 1920×1080 or 1280×720, then set the framing: crop-to-fill or full-frame-on-background for vertical footage. Do not stretch the image.
- Set export format. Choose an MP4 container with H.264 video, progressive scan, and compatible audio. YouTube’s general upload recommendations include AAC-LC audio and a 48 kHz sample rate. Keep the original frame rate where practical instead of converting unnecessarily. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings list the general recommendations.
- Export and review the whole file. Confirm that it plays in landscape, the crop does not lose important content, audio is present and synchronized, and no overlays are cut off. Check for accidental black bars or other unwanted framing.
- For an actual live broadcast, configure the live path separately. A prepared MP4 is not a real-time encoder feed. Set up a live encoder or service, then test with representative movement and audio before relying on the broadcast.
Separate YouTube Live settings from MP4 export settings
The export choices above describe the file. Live ingestion has its own settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoder connections; its guidance also covers RTMP/RTMPS video options, constant bitrate, and compatible audio. For live video, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and advises not exceeding four seconds. Select a bitrate appropriate to the live resolution, frame rate, and the upload connection’s sustained capacity; use YouTube’s resolution-specific bitrate guidance rather than assuming the export file’s settings automatically govern the live feed.

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to go live. The guidance cited here is general YouTube Help information; additional India-specific eligibility conditions are not established here. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Common problems and fixes
- The vertical video looks stretched. The canvas was filled by changing image proportions. Restore the original proportions, then crop or place the complete frame on a background.
- Important content disappears at the sides or top. The crop-to-fill layout removes part of the original image. Reposition the crop if possible, or use a full-frame background layout.
- The finished file is landscape, but the channel is not live. Conversion only creates a video file. Configure a separate live encoder or cloud service to send a live feed to YouTube.
- The stream buffers or disconnects. The live quality may exceed what the connection can sustain. Reduce the live resolution or bitrate using YouTube’s encoder guidance, and test the connection under realistic conditions.
- The stream has compatibility or playback issues. Check the export for MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, compatible audio, and the source frame rate. Review the whole file before using it live.
