To convert an OGG file with as little additional quality loss as possible, first identify the audio codec inside it, then choose the output your player or workflow actually requires. Making an MP3 usually means encoding the audio again with a lossy codec; making a WAV gives you an uncompressed PCM working copy, but cannot restore detail already discarded by a lossy source. If the destination supports the original codec, copying its audio stream into a compatible container avoids re-encoding.
Check what the OGG file contains
OGG names a container, not one specific audio codec. A file ending in .ogg may contain different encoded audio, including Vorbis or Opus. The extension alone is not enough to choose a conversion method.

Use FFprobe, included with FFmpeg, to inspect the input:
ffprobe -hide_banner input.ogg
Check the reported audio stream and codec before choosing an output. The official FFmpeg stream-selection documentation explains how to select streams; the Opus tools documentation describes Ogg Opus as a distinct encoded stream.

Choose the least damaging route for your goal
| Goal | Practical choice | What happens to the audio |
|---|---|---|
| Play the file in software that supports its existing codec | Keep the original OGG file. | No conversion is needed. |
| Change containers while retaining the existing codec | Use stream copy, if the target container supports that codec and the destination application can play it. | The encoded audio packets are copied; they are not decoded and encoded again. |
| Make an MP3 for compatibility | Encode an MP3, for example with FFmpeg’s libmp3lame encoder. |
The source audio is decoded and encoded again. If the OGG audio is already lossy, this adds another lossy generation. |
| Make a WAV for editing or a tool that requires PCM | Decode to the PCM format required by the next application. | The WAV contains a decoded representation, not information restored from the original lossy encoding. |
FFmpeg explains that transcoding decodes and re-encodes a stream, which commonly degrades quality, and recommends stream copying instead when the codec and destination allow it. See the stream-copy documentation and transcoding documentation.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
ffmpeg -i input.ogg -map 0:a:0 -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.mp3
This creates a new lossy encoding; it cannot preserve every detail of an already-lossy source. The -q:a 2 value is an encoder quality setting, not a universal promise of transparency or a fixed bitrate. The appropriate file-size and quality balance depends on the audio and encoder build. FFmpeg documents the encoder’s bitrate and VBR controls in its libmp3lame documentation; it does not establish one setting that is best for every recording or listener.

ffmpeg -i input.ogg -map 0:a:0 -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav
pcm_s16le is an example format, not a recommendation for every project. If the receiving editor or analysis tool specifies a sample rate, bit depth, or channel layout, follow those requirements. Otherwise, avoid adding sample-rate or channel conversions simply because you are creating a WAV: those operations do not recover information missing from the OGG source.
A WAV file is often much larger than its compressed source because it stores uncompressed PCM. That size increase represents a decoded working format, not restored audio detail. FFmpeg’s stream-selection documentation describes mapping streams and output handling.

Copy the stream only when the target supports it
If you need a different container but want to retain the encoded audio, try stream copy only when that container supports the detected codec:
ffmpeg -i input.ogg -map 0:a:0 -c:a copy output.ext
Replace output.ext with the extension for a compatible container. The extension does not make an incompatible codec playable: check the format support of the player or editor that will receive the file. With -c:a copy, FFmpeg copies the selected audio packets without decoding, filtering, or re-encoding them. That avoids another encode, but does not guarantee the resulting container will work in every application.
Check WAV size limits for long recordings
For long recordings, account for the destination application’s support for large WAV variants. FFmpeg documents that its default plain RIFF WAV mode has a 32-bit size-field limit and cannot correctly represent data beyond 4 GB. If a WAV may exceed that limit, check FFmpeg’s RF64 or WAV options and confirm that the application receiving the file supports the chosen format. See the FFmpeg WAV muxer documentation.
Quick Recap
Verify the result in its destination
- Open or play the converted file in the actual player, editor, or analysis tool you need to use.
- Check that the expected audio stream, duration, channels, and any required sample rate or bit depth are present.
- Keep the original OGG file. Neither an MP3 nor a WAV made from it is a way to recover information lost in an earlier lossy encode.
