Use the JPEG XL reference decoder djxl: run djxl input.jxl output.png to preserve decoded pixel values in PNG, or djxl input.jxl output.jpg when you need a JPEG. The distinction matters: PNG can preserve the decoded pixels, while ordinary JPG output may encode a new, lossy JPEG. Exact recovery is possible only when the JXL contains recompressed JPEG data.
Convert a JXL file to PNG or JPG with djxl
The libjxl project’s documented command-line tool chooses the output format from the filename extension. Replace the example names with your own input and desired output paths:

- For PNG:
djxl input.jxl output.png - For JPG:
djxl input.jxl output.jpg
These commands use the JPEG XL reference implementation’s decoder. The libjxl project documents installing cjxl and djxl on Debian-based Linux with apt install libjxl-tools, installing through Homebrew on macOS, and obtaining Windows binaries from its releases. Can you convert JPEG XL without losing quality?
JXL to PNG: preserve decoded pixels
PNG is the better choice when your priority is preserving the decoded pixel values. Decoding to PNG can be pixel-lossless: the resulting PNG can contain the same pixel values produced by decoding the JXL. This preserves the image pixels, not the original JXL file or its bitstream. The djxl manual documents a round-trip example using cjxl -d 0.0 and djxl that reports zero maximum pixel error.

JXL to JPG: usually a new lossy encode
In the ordinary conversion path, JPG output is encoded again and can lose quality because JPEG is lossy. The documented default JPEG quality for djxl is 95; that setting is not a promise of lossless conversion. Avoid describing ordinary JXL-to-JPG conversion as lossless.
Exception: recover the original JPEG from some JXL files
If a JXL was made by recompressing a JPEG, djxl can reconstruct the exact original JPEG by default. This exception applies only to JXL files that contain recompressed JPEG data, not to every JXL. The --pixels_to_jpeg option takes a different route: it decodes pixels and creates a new, lossy JPEG. The libjxl README and manual describe these decoder behaviors.

Choose the output format for your needs

Check animation, color profiles, and metadata
Animated JXL files
An animated JXL input produces multiple output files, with one file per frame and frame-number suffixes. Check the output directory after conversion rather than assuming a single image was created.

djxl provides options to export ICC profiles and decoded metadata, but their transfer should not be assumed to be identical in every conversion. The manual notes that the decoded color profile can differ when color-space overrides are used or when a conversion is unsupported. If color appearance or metadata matters, consult the djxl manual and verify the resulting file in the software or workflow that will use it.

What a lossless setting does—and does not—mean
When encoding images with the libjxl API, its actual lossless setting overrides a set of encoding options to enable bit-for-bit lossless encoding. A distance value of zero on its own does not always ensure that lossless mode is applied. This concerns JXL encoding settings, not a guarantee that converting every JXL to JPG will be lossless. Quality numbers also are not directly comparable across codecs: the same quality value does not guarantee the same visual quality or file size. See the libjxl encoder API documentation for the lossless setting.
