Use a headless browser to render HTML, CSS, images, web fonts, and JavaScript, then capture the rendered page as a PNG. In Node.js, Puppeteer and Playwright both support saving a screenshot to a file or returning image bytes. Use a fixed viewport and wait for the content your page needs before capturing it.
Convert a URL to a full-page PNG with Puppeteer
This example opens a URL, waits for network activity to settle, captures the complete scrollable page, and saves it as output.png. Install Puppeteer first with npm install puppeteer; its package includes a compatible browser setup.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'output.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Save this as capture.mjs and run node capture.mjs. Puppeteer documents Page.screenshot() as capturing a screenshot of the page. Its screenshot API uses PNG by default, so the .png extension matches the output. See the Puppeteer screenshot API and Puppeteer screenshot guide.
Choose when the page is ready
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' waits for network activity to become quiet, but that alone does not guarantee every page is visually ready. A site may load data after navigation, use lazy-loaded images, animate content, or finish applying web fonts later. If you own the page, wait for an application-specific selector or readiness signal before capturing. A fixed delay can help with a known transition, but it is less reliable than waiting for the actual state you need.

Render an HTML string instead of a URL
For HTML held in a Node.js string, set the page content, wait for fonts and any required images, and capture the rendered result. This runnable example writes a PNG file. The embedded page has no remote assets, so it does not need a network wait.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const html = `
<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<style>
body { font: 16px Arial, sans-serif; padding: 32px; }
.card { border: 1px solid #ccc; border-radius: 12px; padding: 24px; }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<main class="card"><h1>Rendered in Node.js</h1><p>This page becomes a PNG.</p></main>
</body>
</html>
`;
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 900, height: 600, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.setContent(html, { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'html.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
If the HTML references external fonts or images, make those resources reachable from the rendering environment and wait for them to load. For example, before the screenshot, you can await document.fonts.ready and check that the page’s images have completed loading. Those checks depend on your content: a failed external asset or a lazy image outside the viewport can otherwise yield an incomplete image.
Return PNG bytes instead of writing a file
Omit path when you need the image in memory for an upload, response, or image-processing pipeline. Puppeteer returns image data when no path is supplied. This example writes the returned bytes to a file to demonstrate the result; replace the write with your storage or upload code as needed.

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {

const png = await page.screenshot({ fullPage: true });
await writeFile('memory.png', png);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Keep the browser lifecycle in a try/finally block in scripts and services. Closing it after a capture releases the browser process even when navigation or screenshot creation throws an error.

Use Playwright for the same job
Playwright provides a similar page screenshot flow. Install its package and browser binaries with npm install -D playwright and npx playwright install chromium. The example below saves a full-page PNG from a URL:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'output.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Playwright’s page.screenshot() returns a Buffer if you omit path, making it convenient for in-memory handling. Its screenshot options also support full-page capture. See the Playwright screenshots guide and Page screenshot API.

Choose based on the browser engine and tooling your project needs, not an assumed speed advantage: the cited API documentation establishes capture behavior, not a performance comparison. Both libraries need a browser executable available in the environment where the Node.js code runs.
Choose the capture scope and output
| Need | What to do |
|---|---|
| Visible viewport only | Capture without fullPage: true. Set the viewport to the desired dimensions before navigation or capture. |
| Entire scrollable page | Use fullPage: true in Puppeteer or Playwright. Be aware that some content only loads when scrolled into view; ensure it is present before capture. |
| One component or card | In Puppeteer, capture an ElementHandle with its screenshot method; in Playwright, capture a locator. Select the element after it appears, and ensure it is not clipped or hidden. |
| Image file | Set path: 'output.png' on the screenshot call. |
| Bytes for an upload or response | Omit path and use the returned data. Playwright documents this return value as a buffer; Puppeteer returns image data as well. |
| Transparent background | Puppeteer offers omitBackground: true; use it when the page background should be transparent rather than the default page color. |
| Specific region | Puppeteer supports a clip rectangle. Define its dimensions and position in page coordinates for the area to capture. |
PNG is the default format in both APIs. JPEG quality settings do not apply to PNG; use a JPEG capture instead only when a lossy format is acceptable. Puppeteer’s available screenshot controls are listed in its screenshot options reference.
Make captures more predictable
A screenshot records a rendered browser state, not an abstract HTML document. Results can vary if viewport, device scale, fonts, remote assets, animations, or application data vary. For repeatable output, control the conditions that affect the page:

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
- Set a known viewport and device scale factor before capture.
- Wait for the specific element or application state that indicates content is ready; network idle is not a universal readiness signal.
- Wait for web fonts and images used in the shot, and make external resources accessible to the browser process.
- For animated content, wait for a chosen frame or disable animations through page CSS when that suits the use case.
- For full-page captures with lazy content, trigger the loading behavior the page expects before taking the screenshot.
Deployment, reliability, and cost considerations
Browser installation and runtime
Headless browser capture requires a compatible browser binary and sufficient runtime resources. In containers or restricted hosting environments, verify that browser installation and launch are supported and that required system dependencies are present. Playwright’s browser installation command is shown above; Puppeteer also requires its browser to be available to the package. A navigation timeout, missing executable, or process launch failure is an environment or page-readiness issue, not a PNG-format problem.
Control concurrency and cleanup
For a one-off script, launching and closing a browser per run is straightforward. In a long-running service, manage browser and page lifetimes deliberately: reuse browser processes where appropriate, limit concurrent captures to the capacity of the host, and close pages when finished. No fixed throughput figure applies across pages and deployment environments; capture time and resource use depend on the browser, page content, and available machine resources.
External dependencies and failure handling
Remote images, scripts, and fonts can fail independently of your Node.js code. Decide whether a missing asset should fail the capture or whether a partial image is acceptable. Add timeouts and error handling around navigation, wait conditions, and screenshot calls, and log the URL or HTML input associated with failures. For user-supplied HTML, apply your own security controls before rendering it: browser automation can load network resources and execute page scripts.

Troubleshooting common HTML-to-PNG problems
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: the page may not have finished rendering, JavaScript may not have populated content, or a resource may have failed. Wait for a page-specific selector or readiness condition and inspect browser errors and network access.
- Fonts or images look different: confirm that the browser can reach those assets and wait for them to load before capture. A successful navigation does not prove every asset is ready.
- Full-page output misses lazy images: those images may load only after scrolling. Trigger the page’s lazy-loading behavior, then wait for the images before capturing.
- The PNG dimensions are unexpected: check the viewport,
deviceScaleFactor, and whetherfullPageis enabled. Full-page output extends beyond the viewport; device scale affects raster dimensions. - Transparent output is opaque: in Puppeteer, use
omitBackground: trueand ensure page CSS does not paint an opaque background over the area. - Browser launch fails in deployment: confirm the expected browser is installed and that the runtime permits launching it. For Playwright, install the selected browser with
npx playwright install chromium. - The process hangs or leaks resources: ensure the browser is closed in a
finallyblock, set appropriate navigation and application waits, and avoid unbounded concurrent captures.
Or skip the browser setup
If your input is a public webpage URL rather than a local HTML string, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one GET request. For a PNG, specify the output format using the API’s documented parameter; the example below follows the supplied API call pattern and saves the response body as a file:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await import('node:fs/promises').then(({ writeFile }) => writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer())));
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and formats. It removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
