Use a .NET HTML-to-PDF library that matches your input and deployment. For a URL or JavaScript-heavy page, choose a Chromium-based renderer such as Syncfusion’s Blink converter. For an HTML string you already generate in code, IronPDF’s ChromePdfRenderer provides a short path from markup to a saved PDF. The examples below show both approaches, explain runtime and licensing checks, and identify the production issues you must test with your own templates.

Choose the conversion path first

The API you need depends on where the HTML comes from. Decide this before selecting a package:

Input Typical API shape What to verify
HTML string generated by your application Render a string and save a PDF Fonts, images, CSS, scripts and encoding are available to the renderer
Local HTML file Render a file path or file URI Relative URLs resolve from the expected directory and the process can read it
Public web page Convert a URL Authentication, redirects, robots or bot checks, network access and page readiness
Authenticated or request-driven page URL plus headers, cookies or GET/POST data Secrets are supplied securely and are not exposed in logs or generated PDFs
MHTML, SVG or a page requiring JavaScript Use a renderer that documents that input or behavior Test the exact scripts, fonts and layout used by your page

Syncfusion documents URL, HTML string/page, HTML file, MHTML, SVG and authenticated/request-based inputs. Its converter uses Blink, a Chromium-based engine, and documents JavaScript execution. Those are vendor capabilities, not a guarantee that every page will match a particular desktop browser.

Option 1: Convert a URL with Syncfusion

Install and check the target

The vendor’s ASP.NET Core example installs Syncfusion.HtmlToPdfConverter.Net.Windows, imports Syncfusion.HtmlConverter and Syncfusion.Pdf, and states compatibility with .NET 8.0 and later for that named Windows package. Do not assume the same requirement applies to every Syncfusion package or operating system; select the package for your target and review its renderer prerequisites.

  1. Create or open a .NET 8 (or later) project that matches the package’s supported target.
  2. Add the package using your normal NuGet workflow.
  3. Confirm the host has every native/runtime dependency required by the selected renderer.
  4. Configure the license as required. Syncfusion states that, from version 16.2.0.x, applications referencing its assemblies from trial setup or NuGet must add the licensing assembly and register a license key under the conditions in its licensing documentation.

Minimal console conversion

using Syncfusion.HtmlConverter;
using Syncfusion.Pdf;

var converter = new HtmlToPdfConverter();
PdfDocument document = converter.Convert("https://example.com");
document.Save("page.pdf");
document.Close(true);

This follows the documented URL-to-PDF flow: create HtmlToPdfConverter, call Convert, save the returned PdfDocument, then release it. In a web request, write to a controlled stream or temporary file and dispose the document deterministically rather than sharing one converter instance across requests unless the vendor explicitly documents that usage as safe.

ASP.NET Core response pattern

[ApiController]
[Route("pdf")]
public sealed class PdfController : ControllerBase
{
    [HttpGet]
    public IActionResult Get()
    {
        var converter = new HtmlToPdfConverter();
        using var document = converter.Convert("https://example.com");
        using var stream = new MemoryStream();
        document.Save(stream);
        return File(stream.ToArray(), "application/pdf", "page.pdf");
    }
}

Adapt disposal to the exact PdfDocument API exposed by your package version. For production, add request cancellation, bounded timeouts, logging without credentials, and a queue for expensive conversions.

Option 2: Convert an HTML string with IronPDF

Install and render

IronPDF’s current tutorial (updated September 17, 2026) constructs ChromePdfRenderer, calls RenderHtmlAsPdf with a string, and saves with SaveAs. The same tutorial describes URL and HTML-page workflows.

using IronPdf;

var html = """

Invoice

Generated at runtime.

"""; var renderer = new ChromePdfRenderer(); var pdf = renderer.RenderHtmlAsPdf(html); pdf.SaveAs("invoice.pdf");

Keep assets self-contained when possible. If your HTML references relative images, stylesheets or fonts, provide a base path or absolute, reachable URLs according to the renderer’s documented API. Treat remote assets as dependencies that can fail independently of the HTML conversion.

Rendering details that decide whether the PDF is usable

JavaScript and asynchronous content

A converter may finish before an application has populated the DOM. Test pages that fetch data, lazy-load images or draw charts. Use the library’s documented wait, script or page-load settings where available, and make the page expose a deterministic “ready” condition. Do not infer browser-perfect output solely from a successful API call.

CSS, fonts and pagination

  • Embed or reliably serve fonts and verify that the deployed host can reach them.
  • Check print-specific rules, page breaks, headers, footers, margins and landscape pages.
  • Inspect long tables, overflowing flex/grid layouts, SVG and high-resolution images at the target paper size.
  • Compare output on the actual operating system and container image used in production.

Security boundaries

Converting arbitrary user-supplied URLs can expose internal services or credentials and can consume significant CPU and memory. Allow-list destinations, reject private network ranges, isolate rendering workers, limit document size and duration, and sanitize untrusted HTML. These controls are application responsibilities; the cited examples do not establish a security model for arbitrary URLs.

Runtime, deployment and licensing checklist

  • Target framework: verify the package’s exact .NET and OS support. The stated .NET 8.0-and-later compatibility applies specifically to Syncfusion’s Net.Windows package.
  • Native prerequisites: install the renderer’s documented Chromium/native dependencies in Windows, Linux or macOS deployments as applicable.
  • License registration: configure the vendor key through a secret store and register it during startup when required; never commit keys to source control.
  • Concurrency: measure memory and CPU per conversion, cap parallel jobs and recycle workers if the vendor recommends it.
  • Observability: record URL or template identifiers, duration, output size and failure category, but redact cookies, authorization headers and private HTML.
  • Validation: create regression PDFs from representative pages after every package, browser-engine or template change.

Performance and cost decisions

No independent benchmark establishes that Syncfusion is faster or more accurate than IronPDF. Measure your own templates, page counts, image sizes, JavaScript workload and concurrency on the deployment host. Include cold-start time, font loading, retries and temporary storage in the measurement. Confirm current commercial, community or trial eligibility and redistribution terms with each vendor before shipping; the cited material only establishes the Syncfusion license-registration condition described above.

Common failures and fixes

Blank or partially rendered PDF

Check that the URL is reachable from the server, wait for asynchronous content, and verify that scripts and remote assets are not blocked. Capture the same page with a minimal test template to separate application data errors from renderer setup.

Missing images or fonts

Use absolute or correctly rooted URLs, grant the process network/file access, check certificate validation and ensure the resources do not require browser-only credentials.

License or assembly error

Confirm the package version, licensing assembly and startup registration. Ensure the key belongs to the deployment and that trial restrictions have not expired.

Works locally, fails in a container or server

Compare OS, architecture, installed native libraries, fonts, sandbox permissions and environment variables. Build a repeatable container image and run a smoke conversion during deployment.

Timeout, high memory use or process crashes

Reduce page complexity, cap image dimensions, limit concurrent jobs and move conversion to a worker queue. Apply cancellation and an upper time limit, then retain the input identifier for retry rather than retrying indefinitely.

Layout differs from Chrome

Confirm the renderer’s engine version and print CSS. Test the exact page, viewport and fonts; a Chromium-based engine improves compatibility but does not promise pixel identity with every browser configuration.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to capture a web page or produce a PDF without installing a renderer, ScreenshotNeo provides a GET-based screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts cookie/consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

For a PDF capture, use the documented endpoint and parameters at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The API also supports full-page capture, CSS-element selection, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration.

FAQ

Can I convert an HTML string without hosting it?

Yes. IronPDF’s RenderHtmlAsPdf flow accepts a string directly; keep referenced assets available to the renderer.

Is a Chromium-based converter guaranteed to match Chrome?

No. Engine version, fonts, viewport, print CSS and timing can change output, so validate representative pages in the deployment environment.

Should conversion run inside an HTTP request?

Small, predictable documents may fit a request, but queueing is safer for slow, memory-intensive or user-controlled pages.
