Convert Apache .htaccess rules by translating their intent into Nginx’s explicit http, server, and location contexts—not by copying lines one for one. Classify every rule as a redirect, internal rewrite, file test, access decision, or backend handoff; then choose return, try_files, rewrite, or a named proxy location. Preserve status codes and query strings deliberately, validate with nginx -t, and test real requests for loops and incorrect routing.

Why .htaccess cannot be copied directly
Apache reads .htaccess files as per-directory configuration. Nginx has no per-directory configuration mechanism, so each rule must be moved into the main Nginx configuration and assigned an explicit context. That usually means an http block for shared settings, a server block for a host and port, and one or more location blocks for URI handling.

The same text can match a different string after migration. In an Apache virtual-host or server context, a rewrite pattern is matched against the URL path. In a per-directory file, Apache removes the directory prefix before matching. A rule in the document root therefore sees a path without the leading directory component, while an Nginx location commonly evaluates a URI beginning with /. Relative substitutions also behave differently because Apache’s per-directory rewrite phase occurs after filesystem translation.
Before writing Nginx syntax, inventory the behavior represented by the Apache file:

This inventory prevents the most common migration error: treating Apache’s rule order and flags as if they had exact Nginx equivalents.
Map Apache concepts to Nginx concepts
| Apache construct | Nginx approach | Important difference |
|---|---|---|
RewriteRule with an R flag |
return 301, return 302, or a pattern-based rewrite ... redirect/permanent |
An external redirect changes the client-visible URL and sends a Location header. |
Internal RewriteRule |
try_files, rewrite, or a named location |
The request remains internal; select the directive that matches the intended processing flow. |
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} |
server_name selection or an explicit variable test |
Host canonicalization is normally clearer in separate server blocks. |
-f and -d filesystem tests |
try_files |
Nginx checks candidates in order and uses the first one that resolves. |
[L] |
last, break, or a named location |
last starts a new location search; break stays in the current location. |
Query-string flags such as QSA or QSD |
Explicit replacement arguments, $args, or no-argument behavior |
Preservation or removal must be intentional. |
Apache condition captures and rule captures are separate concepts. In Nginx, regular-expression captures are exposed as $1, $2, and so on; request data is exposed through variables such as $host, $request_uri, $uri, and $args. Rewrite each capture reference deliberately instead of assuming that a numbered backreference has the same value in both servers.

http context
Use http for settings shared by many virtual hosts, such as upstream definitions, maps, log formats, or MIME configuration. Most URL rewrite rules do not belong here because they need a particular host or URI.
server context
A server block represents a listening address, port, and set of host names. Put canonical-host redirects here, especially when every path on one host should move to another. This avoids running a broad conditional rewrite for every request.
location context
Use locations for path-specific behavior: static files, a front controller, PHP-FPM, or a proxied application. Nginx chooses a location before many rewrite operations, so a rule placed in a broad location can behave differently from the same rule in a more specific one.
Location precedence matters
Put exact and longest-prefix locations ahead of broad fallbacks, and understand how regular-expression locations interact with prefix locations. A catch-all location / containing a front-controller fallback should not accidentally intercept an administrative, API, or static-assets location that needs separate handling.

server_name example.org;
return 301 http://www.example.org$request_uri;
}
server {
listen 80;
server_name www.example.org;
# Normal site configuration goes here.
}
$request_uri contains the original path and query string, so a request such as /products?id=7 redirects to the same path and query on the canonical host. Use https:// in the target when TLS is configured and the canonical site is HTTPS.
Use 301 only when the move is permanent. During a trial migration, a temporary 302 can avoid browsers and caches retaining the redirect. Do not combine a host test, an if, and a rewrite merely because the Apache file did so. A dedicated redirect server block is easier to audit and avoids an extra rewrite stage.
Replacing “everything except these hosts” conditions
Apache can express a negated host condition. In Nginx, make the valid hosts explicit in their own server block and add a default catch-all for unknown or unwanted hosts:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →server {

server_name _;
return 301 http://www.example.org$request_uri;
}
server {
listen 80;
server_name www.example.org;
# Canonical application configuration.
}
This design turns negative condition logic into server selection. Verify that the catch-all does not capture a separate site or an internal health-check host that should remain local.
Convert file-or-front-controller rules with try_files
The common Apache pattern is: serve the requested file if it exists, serve a directory if it exists, otherwise send the request to index.php. Nginx expresses that directly:
server {
root /var/www/example/public;
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args;
}
}
$uri checks the requested path, $uri/ checks a directory, and the final URI is an internal fallback to the front controller. The explicit ?$args preserves the original query string. If the application should receive no query string, omit the arguments instead of carrying them forward accidentally.
Connect the PHP front controller
The fallback only selects a URI; PHP still needs a handler. A typical configuration passes PHP requests to PHP-FPM:

fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
}
Use the socket path and parameter include supplied by your operating system and PHP-FPM package. Ensure direct execution of arbitrary uploaded PHP files is prevented when the application stores user content under the document root.
Do not use a regex where a file test is the real requirement
A long series of regular-expression rewrites that tries to distinguish files, directories, and extension variants is harder to verify than try_files. Keep filesystem selection in try_files; reserve regex rewrites for actual path transformations.
Convert maintenance and application fallback chains
Some Apache configurations test a maintenance page, the requested file, an index file, and an extension variant before forwarding to an application cluster. Nginx can keep the sequence readable and delegate the backend to a named location:
server {
root /var/www/myapp.com/current/public;
location / {
try_files /system/maintenance.html
$uri
$uri/index.html
$uri.html
@app_server_cluster;
}
location @app_server_cluster {
proxy_pass http://app-server;
}
}
The first existing candidate wins. If the maintenance file exists, every request receives it; remove or rename that file to resume normal routing. The named location keeps proxy settings separate from filesystem tests and avoids making the main location a mixture of unrelated concerns.
Define the upstream in the http context when multiple backend servers are involved:
upstream app-server {
server 127.0.0.1:8080;
server 127.0.0.1:8081;
}
For a single backend, a direct proxy_pass can be sufficient. Confirm whether the upstream expects the original URI, a rewritten URI, or a stripped prefix; the trailing slash rules of proxy_pass affect that result.
Translate regex path transformations
Nginx’s rewrite directive accepts a regular-expression pattern and replacement. For example, an old path can be redirected permanently:

server {
server_name www.example.org;
rewrite ^/old-section/(.*)$ /new-section/$1 permanent;
}
Use return for an unconditional redirect with no pattern matching. Use rewrite ... redirect for a temporary pattern-based redirect, or rewrite ... permanent for a permanent one. A rewrite without a redirect flag changes the URI internally.

Understand captures and escaping
Captures such as $1 come from the regular expression. If later directives also use captures, a subsequent match can replace those numbered values; keep related operations together and prefer named variables or a simpler location when the chain becomes difficult to follow. Test encoded characters, trailing slashes, and empty captures rather than testing only an ideal ASCII path.
Preserve or replace the query string intentionally
When a replacement contains no new query string, Nginx generally retains the existing arguments. When the replacement includes a question mark, it defines the new argument string. Use $args when you need to append or explicitly carry the original values, and use the appropriate discard behavior when an old query string must be removed. Check the final request in access logs and at the application, not only in the browser address bar.
Replace Apache flags without creating loops
[L] is not automatically last
Apache’s [L] stops the current Apache rewrite rule set, but per-directory processing can run again in a later phase. Nginx’s last stops the current rewrite set and starts a new location search. If that new search returns to the same location and repeats the rewrite, the request can loop until Nginx emits an error.
break stops rewrite processing in the current context and keeps the request in the current location. Use it when the URI should not trigger a new location search. Use last only when selecting a different location is part of the intended flow. A named location is often clearer when the next step is a backend handoff.
Typical loop causes
- A rewrite in
location /changes the URI to another path that is handled by the same rewrite again. - A front-controller fallback rewrites
/index.phpback to itself. - A trailing-slash redirect runs after an internal rewrite that already supplied the slash.
- Both the canonical-host server and the application server redirect the same request.
Prevent loops by excluding the destination path where necessary, separating external redirects from internal routing, and checking the complete redirect chain with a command-line HTTP client or browser developer tools.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Map common Apache conditions
Host and scheme conditions
Map %{HTTP_HOST} to server selection whenever possible. For HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, use a non-TLS server block that returns the HTTPS URL and a TLS server block for normal content. This is more predictable than placing scheme tests inside every location.
Best Value
Query-string conditions
Apache’s QUERY_STRING corresponds to Nginx’s $args. If only the presence of a parameter matters, an explicit conditional can test $arg_name. Keep such tests narrow and document whether the parameter is removed, retained, or passed to the backend after the rewrite.
Filesystem conditions
Replace most -f and -d tests with ordered try_files candidates. If a condition performs an access decision rather than selecting a file, use the appropriate Nginx access directive or application logic instead of forcing it into a rewrite.
Negated conditions
Negation often signals that the Apache rule is doing host routing or an exception list. Prefer explicit server blocks or specific locations. Use an Nginx conditional only when the decision cannot be expressed by normal configuration selection, and keep it limited to safe, predictable tests.
Migration procedure
- Collect the complete rule set. Include the document-root
.htaccess, nested files, inherited configuration, and any rules generated by a framework or control panel. - Record each rule’s directory. Write down the path prefix Apache removed before matching. Decide whether the Nginx pattern needs a leading slash or an added directory prefix.
- Classify the outcome. Mark every rule as an external redirect, internal rewrite, filesystem test, access decision, or backend handoff.
- Design host routing. Create dedicated server blocks for canonical and non-canonical hosts before writing application locations.
- Replace file tests. Use
try_filesfor existing files, directories, maintenance pages, and front-controller fallbacks. - Map variables and captures. Convert host, scheme, query-string, path, and condition captures to the correct Nginx variables.
- Choose control flow. Decide whether the result needs
return,rewrite,break,last, or a named location. Do not translate flags mechanically. - Make the backend explicit. Configure PHP-FPM or
proxy_pass, including the intended URI, host header, and timeout behavior. - Validate syntax. Run
nginx -tand fix every error before reloading. Then reload through your operating system’s service manager. - Exercise representative requests. Test both hosts, HTTPS and HTTP, existing files, directories, missing paths, old URLs, encoded characters, trailing-slash variants, query strings, and backend routes.
- Compare observable behavior. Record status codes,
Locationheaders, final URIs, response bodies, cache headers, and application logs before and after the migration.
Testing and troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Infinite redirect or rewrite loop | last returns to a location that repeats the same rule, or two server blocks redirect each other. |
Every hop’s host, path, status, and Location header; Nginx error logs. |
| 404 for an existing asset | Wrong root, a missing slash in a prefix, or a regex location taking precedence. |
Resolved document path, selected location, and filesystem permissions. |
| Application receives the wrong path | proxy_pass URI joining or an internal rewrite changed the path unexpectedly. |
Upstream access logs and the exact URI sent by Nginx. |
| Query parameters disappear | The replacement supplied a new query string or omitted the intended arguments. | $args, redirect URL, and application request logs. |
| Redirect has the wrong status | A permanent rewrite was used during testing, or an internal rewrite was mistaken for a client redirect. | Status code and presence of the Location header. |
| PHP source is downloaded | PHP requests are reaching a static handler instead of PHP-FPM. | PHP location, include files, and fastcgi_pass. |
| Unexpected default site appears | The request host does not match the intended server_name, or another block is marked default_server. |
Loaded server blocks and the Host header sent by the client. |
For a redirect check, inspect headers rather than relying on a browser that may cache a permanent redirect. For an internal rewrite, verify that the client’s address does not change while the upstream or filesystem receives the intended URI. Review both access and error logs with timestamps that match the test request.
Decide between return, rewrite, and try_files
- Use
returnfor a known status and destination, especially canonical-host and HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects. - Use
try_fileswhen the decision depends on whether files or directories exist, or when a request should fall back to a front controller. - Use
rewritefor a genuine regex transformation that cannot be expressed as a fixed return or ordered file lookup. - Use a named location when the final step is a proxy or another distinct processing path.
- Use
breakwhen an internal URI change must remain in the current location. - Use
lastonly when a new location search is required and the destination cannot re-enter the same rule indefinitely.
This decision framework produces a configuration that explains itself: host policy is visible in server blocks, file policy in try_files, transformations in regex rewrites, and application handoffs in named locations or backend-specific blocks.
What a successful conversion looks like
A finished migration has no dependency on a hidden .htaccess file. Every host has an intentional server block, every URI is handled by a known location, and every redirect has a deliberate status code. Existing assets remain directly reachable, application routes reach the correct front controller or upstream, and query strings survive—or are discarded—according to an explicit rule.

Most importantly, the Nginx configuration reflects request intent rather than Apache syntax. That semantic approach is what prevents subtle differences in directory prefixes, rewrite phases, status codes, query strings, and location processing from becoming production outages.
