To make an iPhone clip recorded in HEVC play more reliably in an OBS playlist, convert the existing video to H.264, then test the converted file in OBS’s VLC Video source. On a Mac, Apple’s built-in options are QuickTime Player’s File > Export As > Greater Compatibility (H.264) and Finder’s Services > Encode Selected Video Files. For new iPhone recordings, choose Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible.
Why convert an iPhone video from HEVC to H.264?
HEVC, also called H.265, compresses video more efficiently than H.264 while preserving the same visual quality, according to Apple Support. That efficiency can save storage, but a particular playback setup may not handle an HEVC clip as reliably as an H.264 file. Converting creates a separate H.264 copy; it does not change the original unless you replace or delete it yourself.

Convert an existing HEVC video on a Mac
Option 1: Export from QuickTime Player
- Keep the original file, then open the HEVC clip in QuickTime Player.
- Choose File > Export As.
- In the export dialog, choose Greater Compatibility (H.264), then select a destination and save the exported copy.
- If your version of QuickTime Player shows an HEVC checkbox rather than that pop-up, deselect the checkbox to select the compatible export.
Option 2: Encode from Finder
- In Finder, Control-click the video file.
- Choose Services > Encode Selected Video Files.
- Choose an H.264 option from the Settings menu and start encoding.
These menu names and choices can vary by software version. Apple documents both methods in its guide to HEIF and HEVC media.

Choose output dimensions and frame rate
As a starting point, keep the original dimensions and frame rate. Change them only if they do not suit your planned OBS canvas or receiving setup. Apple says 1080p or lower and 60 fps or lower are more broadly compatible with older devices; these are compatibility guidelines, not required OBS streaming settings.
If you use a third-party converter, HandBrake’s official documentation describes H.264 MP4 presets, including Production presets. Those presets are aimed at mastering and typically create files much larger than compressed sources, so they are not automatically the best choice for a compact OBS playlist file.

Record future iPhone videos in H.264
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Camera > Formats.
- Select Most Compatible.
Apple says new photos and videos will then use JPEG or H.264. Select High Efficiency to return to HEIF/HEVC capture. This setting changes future captures, not existing videos.

Add the converted clips to an OBS playlist
For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS describes this source as playlist-capable, with loop or shuffle options and controls for behavior when the source is hidden. VLC must be installed for the source to be available; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS media sources guide.

- Install VLC in the architecture that matches your OBS installation if it is not already installed.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene where the playlist should appear.
- Open the source’s properties and add the converted H.264 clips to its playlist.
- Set the desired order and choose whether the list should loop or shuffle. Review the source’s visibility behavior for the way you use scenes.
- Preview the source and check playback before relying on it during a stream.
OBS’s regular Media Source is intended for an individual media file and lists common containers such as MP4 and MOV. Use VLC Video when you need the playlist functionality described in OBS’s guide.
Verify the complete playlist
- Play each converted file in the actual VLC Video source and confirm that it starts and continues playing.
- Check that audio is present and at the expected level.
- Confirm the clip order, then check the last-to-first transition if looping is enabled.
- Hide and show the source or change scenes to confirm that its visibility behavior matches your setup.
Apple’s compatibility guidance does not guarantee that every H.264 export will play in every computer’s OBS and VLC configuration. Testing the exact files in the target setup is the practical final check.

Why OBS may still not play the clip
- The playlist source is missing: OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- The clip is still HEVC: Camera’s Most Compatible setting does not alter older files. Export or encode the existing clip to H.264, then add that output to the playlist.
- A converted file will not play: Conversion alone cannot guarantee compatibility with every OBS/VLC build or recording characteristic. Open the output outside OBS, then test it in the target VLC Video source. If it still fails, retry conversion with a different supported output setting while preserving the original.
- The picture plays but audio or looping is wrong: Check the actual playlist in OBS, including audio, item order, loop or shuffle choice, and behavior when the source is hidden.
