How to Convert DWG to PDF in Windows

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable Windows workflows are built into Autodesk software. In AutoCAD, open the drawing and use Export PDF, Plot or Publish. If you do not have AutoCAD, install Autodesk DWG TrueView, open the file, choose Plot, select an AutoCAD PDF plotter such as DWG to PDF.pc3, set the sheet and scale, and save the result.

For a drawing with several layouts, use Publish or Export PDF rather than plotting each tab separately. You can create one multi-sheet PDF or a separate PDF for every selected layout. The settings that matter most are paper size, plot area, scale, orientation, plot style and the PDF quality preset.

Choose the right Windows method

Your choice depends on whether you need to edit the DWG, how many layouts you must export and where the PDF will be used.

Method Cost and licensing What it can do Best use Batch capability
AutoCAD desktop Requires an AutoCAD license Edits DWG files and creates PDFs through Plot, Export PDF and Publish Production drawings, controlled print output and repeatable sheet sets All layouts or selected layouts through Publish or Export PDF
DWG TrueView Free Autodesk Windows viewer Opens, views, plots and converts DWG files; it is primarily a viewer rather than an editor Users who need a PDF but do not have AutoCAD Use the available plotting and publishing tools for the installed release; single-sheet Plot is the straightforward workflow
AutoCAD on the web Uses the web version of AutoCAD and its account or plan requirements Plots the current display, Current Layout or All Layouts to a downloaded PDF Browser-based work when installing a desktop application is impractical All layouts can be selected in the Plot workflow

AutoCAD is the only option in this table that gives you full drawing-editing capability. TrueView is useful when the DWG is already correct and you only need to inspect or plot it. The web workflow is convenient, but some paper sizes may not be editable in the browser.

Check the DWG before exporting

A PDF records the plotted result, not every object or setting in the source drawing. A quick check prevents most blank, clipped or incorrectly scaled output.

  • Confirm that the file opens without a recovery warning or unresolved external-reference problem.
  • Identify whether the sheet is in Model space or on a named Layout tab. Layouts normally contain a title block and one or more viewports with intended sheet settings.
  • Confirm the intended paper size, such as the required engineering or architectural sheet size. The paper chosen in the Plot dialog controls the printable page, regardless of the DWG’s geometry.
  • Decide whether the output must be measured at a particular scale or only fit the page. A “fit to paper” result is not a substitute for a required engineering scale.
  • Check layers, lineweights, colors and the assigned plot style. A layer that is hidden, frozen or set not to plot will not appear in the PDF.
  • If the drawing uses custom fonts, make sure those fonts are installed or available to the Autodesk application. Substitution can change text appearance and, in some cases, line wrapping.

Method 1: Convert one DWG with AutoCAD desktop

AutoCAD has native PDF output; you do not need a separate converter.

Option A: Use Export PDF

  1. Open AutoCAD and open the DWG.
  2. Choose Export PDF from the application menu or the PDF export command available in your release.
  3. Choose whether to export the current layout, all layouts or selected layouts, depending on the options displayed.
  4. Review the output settings. Confirm paper size, orientation, plot area, scale, plot style and the PDF preset.
  5. Choose a filename and destination, then save the PDF.

Export PDF is convenient when the drawing is already organized on layouts. Before saving, inspect the page preview or generated file to make sure the title block, notes and viewport contents are inside the printable area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option B: Use Plot for the current sheet

  1. Open the DWG and activate the sheet you need. You can plot from Model space or from a predefined Layout.
  2. Open the Plot dialog. You can use the Plot command or enter PLOT at the command line.
  3. Under the printer or plotter selection, choose an AutoCAD PDF plotter, commonly DWG to PDF.pc3.
  4. Select the required paper size.
  5. Set the Plot area. Typical choices include Layout, Window, Display or Extents, depending on the active space and your release.
  6. Set the intended scale. For a layout with a correctly configured viewport, preserve the layout scale rather than applying an arbitrary fit.
  7. Choose portrait or landscape orientation and check the plot offset or centering options.
  8. Apply the required plot style and lineweight behavior.
  9. Use the preview, if available, to look for clipping, missing layers, incorrect lineweights or an unexpected blank area.
  10. Click OK, choose the output path and save.

Autodesk’s support procedure permits printing from Model view or a predefined Layout. The important distinction is that Model space usually requires you to define the window and scale, while a prepared Layout often already contains the intended sheet composition.

Understanding the Plot settings

Plot area: Select the smallest area that should appear. Layout plots the layout’s paper space. Window lets you pick two corners. Extents includes all plottable objects, which can produce an unexpectedly small drawing if stray geometry exists far from the sheet.

Paper size: Select the physical page size required by the recipient or printer. Choosing a larger page than the title block may make the drawing look undersized; choosing a smaller one can clip notes or borders.

Scale: A scale such as 1:100 or 1/8" = 1′-0" is meaningful only when the plot area and drawing units are set correctly. If the recipient needs a measurable drawing, do not silently replace the required scale with Fit to Paper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Orientation and centering: Landscape and portrait rotate the page. Centering can correct an offset window, but it will not fix a wrong plot area or an incorrectly sized title block.

Plot style: The style controls such as color-to-black mapping, screening and lineweights affect the PDF’s visual hierarchy. A color drawing can therefore become a black-and-white deliverable without changing the DWG geometry.

Convert multiple layouts into one PDF

Use Publish or the multi-layout options in Export PDF when a DWG contains several sheets. Plotting each tab manually is slower and makes inconsistent settings more likely.

Export all or selected layouts

  1. Open the DWG and start Export PDF.
  2. Choose All Layouts for every layout, or select the layouts you need.
  3. Review the order of the sheets and remove any layout that should not be delivered.
  4. Set the PDF preset and output options.
  5. Save the resulting PDF and check that every expected sheet is present.

Publish a sheet set

  1. Open the Publish command from the Output or application controls.
  2. Choose the layouts to publish. You can publish all layouts or publish only the selected layouts.
  3. Open Publish Options.
  4. Enable Multi-sheet file when you want one combined PDF. Clear that option when you need one PDF file per layout.
  5. Confirm the PDF plotter, paper settings, page order and output folder.
  6. Start publishing and wait for the job to finish before opening the files.

A combined file is generally easier to transmit as one drawing package. Separate files are useful when individual sheets go to different reviewers or when a document-management system expects one file per sheet. The Multi-sheet file choice controls this distinction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you publish

  • Give layouts clear names so the PDF order is easy to verify.
  • Open each layout’s page setup and check that it uses the intended paper size, orientation, plot style and scale.
  • Remove construction or issue layouts that are not part of the deliverable.
  • Check that every viewport is displaying the intended layer state and visual content.
  • After publishing, compare the PDF page count with the number of layouts selected and inspect at least the first, middle and last sheets.

Method 2: Convert DWG to PDF without AutoCAD using DWG TrueView

Autodesk describes DWG TrueView as a freeware viewer program. Its supported functions include opening DWG files, plotting them, creating PDFs and converting between DWG formats. It is therefore the practical no-AutoCAD route when the drawing does not need editing.

Install and open the drawing

  1. Download and install the current Windows release of DWG TrueView from Autodesk.
  2. Launch TrueView and open the DWG.
  3. Allow the file to finish loading. If TrueView reports missing references, fonts or other dependencies, note them before plotting because they can affect fidelity.
  4. Activate Model space or the Layout tab that you need to convert.

Plot to PDF in TrueView

  1. Choose Plot or enter PLOT.
  2. In the plotter list, select DWG to PDF.pc3 or another AutoCAD PDF plotter installed with TrueView.
  3. Choose the paper size.
  4. Set the plot area. Use the layout when the sheet is prepared there, or use a window when you are selecting a region from Model space.
  5. Set the scale and orientation.
  6. Apply the correct plot style, lineweights and centering options.
  7. Preview the sheet if the dialog provides a preview.
  8. Click OK, select the output folder and filename, and save the PDF.

TrueView is primarily for viewing and plotting. If the source DWG needs geometry, text, layer or layout edits, make those changes in a licensed editing application before producing the final PDF.

When TrueView output differs from the DWG

PDF output can legitimately look different from an on-screen DWG. A missing font may be substituted by the viewer, changing glyphs or spacing. Some three-dimensional visual styles can rasterize viewports, which may remove searchable text or layer behavior in those areas. Lineweights and plot styles can also make thin geometry appear heavier or lighter than it does in the drawing editor.

Method 3: Use AutoCAD on the web

The browser workflow is useful when you have access to AutoCAD on the web and prefer not to install the desktop application.

Some paper sizes are unsupported or cannot be edited in the web interface. If the required size is unavailable, use a desktop workflow with the appropriate page setup rather than assuming that a browser substitute will preserve the intended scale.

Select the right PDF quality preset

Autodesk’s PDF presets are PC3 configurations. They balance image and vector quality, file size and the device or purpose for which the PDF is intended. Presets can be customized when the standard choices do not meet your requirements.

Purpose Preset direction What to verify
Printed drawing or formal deliverable Use a high-quality print preset Paper size, scale, lineweights, text legibility and printer margins
Email or archive where compact files matter Use a smallest-file-size preset Thin lines, small text and any raster content still remain readable
Browser or mobile review Use the web and mobile preset Zoomed linework, annotations and page rendering on the target device
General documentation Use the general-documentation preset That the balance between quality and size matches the recipient’s needs

A smaller PDF is not automatically better. Compression can make fine linework or rasterized viewport content less clear. Conversely, the highest-quality print setting may create a file larger than needed for a quick review.

Preserve scale, text and layer information

Scale and measurement

When scale matters, print a known dimension or include a graphic scale bar in the source drawing. Check the PDF with a viewer’s measurement tool only after confirming that the viewer is using the PDF’s page dimensions correctly. A PDF exported with an incorrect paper size or a fit-to-paper setting cannot be made accurate by measuring it later.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Fonts and searchable text

Install the fonts required by the DWG when permitted, and review notes, symbols and title-block text in the PDF. Font substitution can alter spacing. If a 3D visual style is rasterized, text inside that viewport may no longer be searchable even though it remains visibly present.

Layers and vector behavior

Vector PDF output generally keeps linework sharp when zoomed. Rasterized viewports behave like images: they may not support the same text search or layer interaction. If a recipient needs selectable layers or searchable annotations, inspect the output rather than assuming every viewport was preserved as vector data.

Troubleshoot failed or incorrect PDF export

TrueView says the plotter configuration cannot be used

Autodesk identifies missing plotter support files as a cause of this failure. Check the printer-configuration search path in TrueView and verify that the DWG TrueView Plotters folder contains the required support files. If the support folder is missing or damaged, reinstall TrueView and try the plot again.

The PDF preset is greyed out

A missing or inaccessible PC3 configuration can make PDF choices unavailable. Check the same printer search path and Plotters folder, restart TrueView, and reinstall it if the files are absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PDF is blank

  • Confirm that the selected plot area actually contains geometry.
  • Check that the relevant layers are on, thawed and set to plot.
  • In Model space, replace an overly broad Extents selection with a Window selection around the intended drawing.
  • Preview the page and verify that the objects are not outside the paper boundary.

Parts of the drawing are clipped

  • Choose the correct paper size and orientation.
  • Check printer margins and plot offset.
  • Use a Window or Layout plot area that includes the entire title block and notes.
  • Make sure the viewport or layout is not extending beyond the printable page.

The drawing is too small or the scale is wrong

  • Check whether Fit to Paper was selected.
  • Verify drawing units and the intended plot scale.
  • For a prepared Layout, preserve its page setup and viewport scale instead of plotting the model as an unscaled display.
  • Confirm that the selected paper size matches the sheet for which the title block was designed.

Lineweights or colors look wrong

Review the assigned plot style and whether lineweights are enabled. A style that maps colors to black, screens them or assigns heavy weights can produce a PDF that differs substantially from the colored on-screen drawing. Compare the preview with the requested print standard.

Text is missing or looks substituted

Look for missing-font notifications and install or supply the intended fonts where licensing allows. Reopen the DWG and regenerate the PDF after the font issue is resolved. Also check whether the text is inside a rasterized 3D viewport, where it may not be searchable.

The web workflow does not offer the required page size

AutoCAD on the web may not allow every paper size to be edited. Use a desktop AutoCAD or TrueView workflow with a configured PDF plotter when the required size, margins or page setup is unavailable in the browser.

Verify the finished PDF before sending it

  1. Open the PDF in a viewer and confirm the page count.
  2. Check the first and last pages, plus any sheet with a different orientation or paper size.
  3. Zoom into fine linework, dimensions, symbols and small notes.
  4. Confirm that the title block shows the intended project, sheet number, revision and date.
  5. Measure a known dimension if the recipient requires a scale-accurate drawing.
  6. Search for a distinctive text label to see whether text remains searchable where expected.
  7. Print a test page when the deliverable is intended for paper, using the same paper size specified in the plot.

Which workflow should you use?

  • You have AutoCAD and need one sheet: use Plot for explicit control, or Export PDF when the layout is already prepared.
  • You have AutoCAD and need a drawing package: use Publish or Export PDF, then enable Multi-sheet file for one combined PDF.
  • You do not have AutoCAD: use DWG TrueView, select DWG to PDF.pc3, and verify the page setup and scale.
  • You are working on a machine where installation is impractical: use AutoCAD on the web, provided its available paper sizes and plot settings meet the requirement.
  • The PDF will be printed: favor a high-quality print preset and verify lineweights and paper size.
  • The PDF is for compact sharing: use the smallest-file preset only after checking that fine details remain readable.
  • The PDF is for browser or mobile review: use the web and mobile preset and inspect the result at the zoom levels reviewers will use.
