That file is not a live broadcast: going live from a camera requires a real-time encoder feeding YouTube. The distinction matters whether you are preparing footage in India or elsewhere; YouTube’s cited upload and live-stream guidance does not specify a separate India-only format or bitrate.
First decide: uploaded video or live camera broadcast?
“YouTube Live” can mean either a video you plan to upload to your channel or an actual live event. A converted MP4 is a file for an ordinary YouTube upload. It does not become live merely because it is in MP4 format. A live broadcast needs an encoder to send a real-time feed to YouTube using a supported protocol and settings.

- Recorded DSLR footage: convert the camera file to an upload-ready MP4, review it, and upload it as a standard video.
- Live camera footage: connect the camera to a live-encoding setup and send the encoded feed to YouTube. Follow YouTube’s live settings rather than treating the MP4 export settings as a live configuration.
Convert recorded DSLR footage to MP4
1. Check the source file
Before converting, identify the file’s actual video and audio streams, frame rate, resolution, and whether the footage is interlaced. DSLR cameras can produce different formats, so do not assume that every camera starts with the same kind of file. Renaming a file extension to “.mp4” does not convert its contents; use a transcoder.
2. Open it in HandBrake
HandBrake documents Creator presets for video-hosting services such as YouTube. These include combinations using MP4, H.264 video, and AAC stereo audio. Choose a YouTube-oriented Creator preset that matches your needs, or set the output options yourself. See HandBrake’s official presets documentation.

3. Set the output for YouTube upload
- Container: MP4.
- Video: H.264 is YouTube’s recommended upload codec. Use progressive output where appropriate, and preserve the source frame rate rather than changing it without a reason.
- Audio: AAC-LC is among YouTube’s listed upload audio choices; set the sample rate to 48 kHz. HandBrake’s YouTube-oriented Creator presets include AAC stereo.
- MP4 playback: YouTube recommends a fast-start MP4, with the moov atom at the front of the file. A suitable transcoder preset can handle this container detail.
YouTube’s upload recommendations also say to encode and upload at the same frame rate as recorded. Check its current recommended upload encoding settings if you need the full set of format guidance.
4. Review the converted file
Play the export before uploading. Check that the image is oriented correctly, the sound is present, audio and video remain in sync, and the clip plays through as expected. This catches problems in the converted file before you publish it.
5. Upload it as a regular video
Upload the finished MP4 through YouTube’s standard video-upload workflow. If your intent is a scheduled or ongoing live event, stop here and use a real-time encoder workflow instead; uploading a converted file is not the same operation as starting a live stream.

For a live DSLR camera broadcast
A live camera workflow encodes the camera feed in real time and sends it to YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options. Its published live guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps, specifies constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3; AAC is required for 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS.

Choose live bitrate for the resolution and frame rate
For H.264 ingestion, YouTube lists these figures. They are platform guidance, not India-specific measurements:

Use a bitrate your connection can sustain reliably, not merely the highest number your internet plan advertises. YouTube advises testing the connection and the stream before the event, then monitoring stream health. Review its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the settings that apply to your chosen resolution, frame rate, and ingestion codec.
India-specific settings
The official YouTube guidance cited here gives general upload and live-encoder recommendations, not a separate India-only conversion format or bitrate table. There is no special Indian MP4 preset established by these sources. For a live broadcast in India, base the bitrate on measured, sustained upload capacity at the location where you will stream, and test the actual setup before going live.

Recording format and live encoding are separate choices
The container that is convenient for recording or editing does not have to be the final upload container. OBS’s format guide discusses recording-container trade-offs, including fragmented MP4/MOV options for upload or editing, and cautions against direct MP4/MOV recording in the context it describes. This does not mean every DSLR makes the same source file or that OBS is required to convert an existing recording. Hardware encoding can shift encoding work from the CPU to specialized GPU hardware, but that is a performance consideration for a computer running a live encoder, not a requirement for offline conversion.

Troubleshooting
The converted file will not play or upload as expected
Confirm that the file was actually transcoded rather than renamed, and check that the export uses MP4 with H.264 video and a supported audio codec such as AAC-LC. Re-export from the original camera file if necessary.
The frame rate looks different from the recording
Check the source frame rate and the transcoder’s frame-rate setting. YouTube recommends retaining the recorded frame rate; do not change it simply to match an assumed standard.
The image is sideways or audio is out of sync
Inspect the transcoder’s output orientation and play the converted file through to check synchronization. If the problem is present in the export, correct the conversion settings and create a new file before uploading.

For a live encoder, verify the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR setting, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s live guidance. Check sustained upload capacity, reduce the live bitrate if the connection cannot hold it reliably, and test again before the event. Use YouTube’s stream-health monitoring during the broadcast.

The camera recording container is not MP4
That alone does not mean the footage is unusable. Work from the camera’s actual source file in a transcoder such as HandBrake, then export the MP4 upload copy. A recording-container preference for an OBS workflow does not determine which format every DSLR uses.
