Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOn iPhones running the iOS 26-era Calculator, you can convert currencies without installing another app. Open Calculator, choose Change Mode → Convert, select the two currencies, and enter an amount. The result updates as you type; Swap Units reverses the direction.
This is ideal for checking a travel price or building a budget. It is a reference estimate, not a guaranteed card, bank, ATM, merchant, or transfer quote.

The fastest way to convert currency in Calculator
- Open the Calculator app.
- Tap the Change Mode button.
- Turn on Convert.
- Tap the Unit button.
- Choose the source currency and the destination currency.
- Enter the amount. The converted value appears and changes as you type.
- To reverse the calculation, tap Swap Units.
Apple documents this workflow in its iPhone Calculator guide and iPhone User Guide. Currency conversion is part of Calculator’s general unit-conversion mode.
Example: convert U.S. dollars to euros, pounds, Canadian dollars, or yen
For a U.S. price check, set USD as the source currency and select EUR, GBP, CAD, JPY, or another available destination. Enter, for example, 100. Calculator displays the current conversion available to the device; do not treat the changing number as a permanently fixed rate.

The same process works for a restaurant menu, an online listing, a hotel quote, or a travel budget. You can then perform arithmetic on the converted figure, such as adding an estimated tip or tax.
Convert a foreign price back into U.S. dollars
- Open Calculator’s Convert mode.
- Select the foreign currency first and USD second.
- Enter the foreign amount.
- If the fields are reversed, tap Swap Units.
For example, set EUR → USD to answer “How many dollars is €50?” Set USD → EUR to answer “How many euros is $50?” Always check the labels before relying on the result.
Use Swap Units to fix the direction
Swap Units changes USD → EUR into EUR → USD, or reverses any other pair. This is safer than manually re-entering currencies when you realize that you selected the destination first. A quick sanity check also helps: if one dollar buys more than one unit of the other currency, a dollar amount may produce a larger numerical foreign-currency figure; if it buys less than one unit, the numerical figure may be smaller. Japanese yen commonly produces larger numbers because a yen is a small unit, not because the number itself measures economic strength.
Can Math Notes convert currency?
Apple also supports unit and currency conversions in Math Notes. This is useful when you want to combine a conversion with written arithmetic. Apple illustrates the feature with a unit expression such as 50 m in feet =; currency syntax and available behavior can vary by device language and configuration, so test the expression on your iPhone rather than assuming every natural-language phrase will work identically. See Apple’s conversion instructions.

Calculator is accurate enough for many everyday estimates, but Apple does not specify on the cited support pages a universal rate provider, refresh interval, markup policy, or offline guarantee. The number shown is best treated as an available reference rate at that moment.
Your final transaction can differ because of:
- Card-network or bank exchange rates and foreign-transaction fees.
- ATM operator charges and bank spreads.
- Merchant dynamic currency conversion, where a merchant converts the purchase instead of your card network.
- Transfer-service fees, funding costs, timing differences, and rounding.
Before exchanging or sending money, check the quote from the bank, card issuer, ATM, merchant, or transfer provider that will actually process the transaction. A Calculator result is not a binding quote.
What if Convert is missing?
- Open Calculator and tap Change Mode; Convert is inside that control, not necessarily a separate app.
- Check the iPhone’s iOS version and install available updates.
- Confirm that the device supports the current Calculator interface. Apple feature availability can vary by iOS release and device; see the iOS and iPadOS 26 feature-availability page.
- If the option remains unavailable, use a reputable browser-based converter or dedicated app as a fallback.
What if a currency is unavailable?
Calculator does not promise support for every currency. Try a reputable dedicated converter or the calculator supplied by your bank, card issuer, or transfer provider. Converting through an intermediate currency can provide a rough estimate, but it adds rounding and rate differences and should not be used to set an actual transaction amount.
What if the result looks wrong?
- Verify the source and destination labels.
- Confirm that you entered the number in the intended field.
- Tap Swap Units if the direction is backward.
- Compare like with like: a card charge may include fees or a merchant’s conversion.
- Consider that the rate may have moved between checking the price and completing the purchase.
- Check whether the merchant offered dynamic currency conversion.
Does currency conversion work without internet?
Apple’s cited documentation does not confirm that Calculator can refresh currency rates or reliably use them offline. If you lose connectivity, the rate may be unavailable or may not be current. For important travel planning, check rates before going offline and leave room for fees and rate movement. An app that advertises cached or offline rates may help, but verify that capability in its current listing.
When Calculator is enough—and when it is not
| Need | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One quick estimate | iPhone Calculator | Built in, fast, and requires no additional signup. |
| Charts, favorites, widgets, alerts, or frequent travel | Dedicated converter app | More tracking and presentation features. |
| Sending or holding money internationally | Transfer or multi-currency service | Handles an actual transaction rather than only an estimate. |
| Final purchase cost | Card issuer or payment provider | Shows the rate and fees that apply to the real payment. |
Dedicated converter apps
The App Store listing for Currency describes historical charts, widgets, Apple Watch support, additional currencies, and rate updates as often as every five minutes. Those are claims of that listing and can change; the exact Currency+ price was not stated there. Such an app is useful for repeated checks, but unnecessary for an occasional estimate.
XE provides a converter on its site and app. Its help page distinguishes a displayed converter rate from the rate used when sending money. Do not assume a transfer is cheaper than a bank without comparing a current, transaction-specific quote.
Money-transfer and multi-currency services
Use a service such as Wise when you need to convert, hold, spend, receive, or send money—not merely see what a price is worth. Wise says its U.S. conversion fee varies by currency and showed rates from 0.57% when retrieved on August 16, 2026; use its live calculator for the exact pair and amount.
Wise’s U.S. card page listed no subscription fee, a $9 card-ordering fee, a free digital card, and no Wise ATM fee up to a combined $250 per calendar month. After that threshold, it listed $1.95 + 1.95% per withdrawal, while the ATM owner may charge separately. Pricing can change and depends on the transaction; see Wise card fees and Wise account pricing.

Is Siri an alternative?
Siri can answer ordinary calculations, but Apple’s retrieved Calculator documentation does not provide a specific, verified currency-conversion command. Treat any Siri phrasing as an optional experiment, not the dependable workflow. Calculator’s Convert mode remains the documented method.
Quick Recap
How to avoid costly mistakes
- Identify whether you need an estimate, an exchange, or a payment quote.
- Read both currency labels before entering the amount.
- Use Swap Units instead of guessing which field is the source.
- Allow for card, ATM, merchant, bank, or transfer fees.
- For a large or time-sensitive transaction, use the provider’s own quote immediately before confirming.
