You can avoid an unnecessary quality-losing conversion by checking the codecs inside your AVI and using FFmpeg stream copy when those codecs work with the output container and YouTube ingest. If they do not, encode once to YouTube’s supported settings. That prevents an extra local generation of loss; it cannot guarantee that viewers receive the original file unchanged, because YouTube transcodes live streams.
What “without quality loss” can—and cannot—mean
AVI is a container, not a video or audio codec. The file may contain different combinations of streams, so its extension alone cannot tell you whether it can be sent to YouTube unchanged.

FFmpeg stream copy moves compressed packets without decoding or encoding them. When the destination supports the source streams, that step introduces no additional encoding loss. If you need to change codecs, resize, deinterlace, alter frame rate, add overlays, or process audio, the media must be decoded and encoded. That can reduce quality, especially with lossy codecs; avoid repeated lossy generations. FFmpeg documentation
This is not an end-to-end promise of lossless viewing. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into formats for viewers, so you can avoid an unnecessary local re-encode but cannot ensure bit-for-bit preservation through YouTube. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Inspect the AVI before converting it
Use FFprobe, included with FFmpeg, to identify the video and audio streams and their properties:
ffprobe input.aviNote the video codec, audio codec, frame size, frame rate, pixel format, and whether the video is interlaced. These details determine whether stream copy is viable and whether any processing is actually needed. If there are multiple audio or video streams, choose deliberately rather than assuming the first stream is the one you want.

Try stream copy when the codecs are compatible
If the target container supports the AVI’s existing codecs, remuxing can put the streams into a new container without re-encoding. For example, this command selects the first video and first audio stream and attempts to copy them into MP4:
ffmpeg -i input.avi -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy output.mp4This is an example, not a universal AVI conversion command: success depends on the actual codecs and the MP4 muxer’s support. If it fails, do not assume the file is corrupt; the chosen output container may not support one of its streams. Check the output by playing it and inspecting it with FFprobe before configuring a long broadcast. FFmpeg explains the limits and behavior of stream copy in its documentation.

Transcode once if stream copy is unsuitable
If the source codecs cannot be carried through the required container or are unsuitable for YouTube ingest—or if you need filtering or conversion—decode and encode the file once. Keep the original resolution and frame rate where practical. Do not upscale or change cadence without a reason: those operations do not restore detail and may add processing artifacts.
For a common H.264/AAC RTMP(S) workflow, use constant bitrate (CBR), progressive square-pixel output, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends that keyframes not exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate suited to the output resolution and frame rate; its published H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees of the quality viewers will see. YouTube also lists H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps for live ingest. Consult the current YouTube settings page before configuring an encoder, since guidance can change. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

Loop a compatible file to YouTube with FFmpeg
For an already compatible file, this illustrative command reads it at its native frame rate, loops it indefinitely, copies its streams, and sends an FLV stream to an RTMPS destination:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEYReplace the example destination with the ingest URL and stream key provided in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private. This command only works when the codecs are compatible with the muxer and ingest settings; it does not convert an incompatible AVI into a suitable stream. If your source needs transcoding, specify an encoder and configure its output for YouTube’s current requirements rather than using -c:v copy or -c:a copy. A loop command by itself does not provide uptime, network recovery, or automatic restart; those depend on the machine, connection, and process supervision you arrange.
Test the actual broadcast before leaving it unattended
Run a test with representative motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health and confirm that the broadcast appears as expected. YouTube advises testing before a stream; its diagnostics can expose issues including low bitrate, missing audio, unsupported codecs, and keyframe problems. - Check that the chosen video and audio streams are present and playing.
- Confirm the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against the encoder configuration.
- Watch stream health during the test rather than relying only on FFmpeg reporting that it connected.
- For a 24/7 run, decide how you will respond to a dropped connection or stopped process; looping the file does not solve those failures automatically.

Before looping a recording publicly, make sure you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other material it contains. A successful technical ingest does not establish permission to broadcast the content or guarantee that a channel complies with YouTube’s rules.
