You may not need to convert AV1 to H.264 at all: YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists AV1 as an accepted video codec for RTMP/RTMPS streams. First check whether your OBS version, encoder, and workflow can use the AV1 file. Convert only if another part of your workflow requires H.264 or you choose an H.264 streaming encoder. If conversion is needed, use a compatible H.264 encoder, keep the original file, and test the converted video and OBS stream before going live.

Do you need to convert AV1 for YouTube Live?

Not necessarily. YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs over RTMP/RTMPS. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide also covers AV1 and H.264. Whether your file works without conversion depends on the particular OBS build, encoder, and streaming workflow you are using.

  • Keep AV1 if OBS and the selected streaming encoder accept your file and the stream works in a test.
  • Convert to H.264 if a player, editor, or other step requires it, or if you deliberately select an H.264 streaming encoder.

H.264 remains a useful compatibility choice: OBS describes it as its default codec and broadly playable across devices and software. Changing the file container or remuxing it does not change AV1 video into H.264; conversion requires decoding the AV1 video and encoding it again.

What matters most on a low-end PC?

Separate two workloads: converting a saved file offline and encoding a live OBS stream in real time. An offline conversion can take a long time but does not have to keep pace with playback. A live stream must render and encode continuously while OBS handles your scenes and sources.

OBS says real-time software AV1 encoding requires a high-end CPU. Its Hardware Encoding guide generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because compatible GPU hardware can take encoding work off the CPU. OBS identifies NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync Video as possible hardware paths; availability depends on the specific hardware, drivers, and OBS encoder menu. Do not assume a particular computer supports a given encoder based only on its brand.

There is no universal “low-end PC” setting. OBS notes that CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Your source file, selected encoder, scenes, and available upload bandwidth all affect the result.

Convert AV1 to H.264 when your workflow requires it

The appropriate conversion settings depend on the encoder available on your machine and the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. Use the workflow below to avoid unnecessary conversion and catch quality or audio problems before a live session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep the original AV1 file. Make a separate output copy so you can retry with different settings if the conversion is too slow or the result does not play correctly.
  2. Confirm that conversion is necessary. Check whether your installed OBS version and selected encoder can use AV1. If they can, test the original file in a private or otherwise appropriate test stream before creating another encode.
  3. Select an H.264 encoder available on this PC. Check the encoder choices shown by your installed conversion software. A compatible hardware encoder may reduce CPU load compared with software encoding; hardware availability is system-specific. Do not assume that a GPU brand alone guarantees a working encoder.
  4. Choose an output resolution and frame rate you can sustain. Avoid increasing them above the source unnecessarily. If the PC struggles during the subsequent OBS stream, lower the output resolution or frame rate rather than expecting conversion alone to solve live performance problems.
  5. Handle audio deliberately. Keep the audio stream if needed, and select an audio format supported by your playback and streaming workflow. Check for missing, muted, or out-of-sync audio after conversion.
  6. Play the converted file from beginning to end, or inspect a representative section. Confirm that video, audio, duration, and synchronization are acceptable before loading it into the live workflow. Re-encoding is lossy, so the output may not look identical to the AV1 source.
  7. Test OBS with representative content. Use the same scenes, sources, audio, resolution, frame rate, and encoder you plan to use live. Check OBS and YouTube stream-health messages before relying on the setup.

These steps are intentionally software-neutral: an exact conversion command or GUI setting depends on the transcoder and encoders actually installed on your PC. The OBS and YouTube guidance cited here does not establish one universal FFmpeg command or transcoder preset for every system.

Set OBS and YouTube Live for a stable H.264 stream

YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations are platform guidance, not a promise that your PC or internet connection can sustain the stream.

Output YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your system and stable upload connection can handle. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams to provide different output formats, but this does not remove the need to send a stable stream.

In OBS, select the H.264 encoder you intend to use, then configure the output to match your planned resolution and frame rate. Set rate control to CBR and keyframe interval to two seconds where those controls are available. OBS labels can differ by version and encoder, so verify the selected encoder’s own controls rather than assuming every installation uses identical menus. Use your YouTube stream key only in OBS’s stream configuration; keep it private, since anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

OBS recommends testing with representative audio and movement, monitoring YouTube stream health, and reviewing messages during the event. A static test image or silent clip may not reveal the problems that appear with a busy scene or full audio mix.

Reduce OBS load if the stream stutters or drops frames

OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide recommends reducing output resolution and frame rate when performance is poor. Lowering either reduces work; if 60 fps is not working, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. Also simplify scenes by removing or reducing sources and effects that are not needed.

  • Lower output resolution: This reduces the GPU resources OBS needs for output. Choose a lower target that still suits your viewers and content.
  • Lower frame rate: Try 30 fps if 60 fps cannot be sustained. This reduces rendering and encoding work.
  • Simplify scenes: Reduce scene complexity and unnecessary sources or effects.
  • Check the actual bottleneck: Watch OBS statistics and system load while testing; CPU, GPU, and upload problems call for different fixes.

Keep the base canvas intact unless resources are severely constrained. OBS notes that changing it requires repositioning sources. Do not treat conversion to H.264 as a guaranteed performance fix: an offline conversion may change which codec OBS reads, but the live workload still depends on the chosen encoder, output settings, scene complexity, and hardware.

Troubleshoot common conversion and streaming problems

  • OBS will not use the AV1 file: Confirm that the installed OBS version and selected encoder support the file’s codec and container. If not, create an H.264 copy with a compatible encoder and test it.
  • The converted file has no sound or audio is out of sync: Review the conversion software’s audio handling and check the output file independently before opening OBS.
  • OBS reports rendering or encoding lag: Lower output resolution or frame rate, try 30 fps instead of 60 fps, and simplify scenes. Check whether CPU or GPU load is the constraint before changing more settings.
  • YouTube reports an unstable stream: Confirm that the selected bitrate is sustainable on your upload connection, use CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages during a representative test.
  • A hardware encoder is missing from OBS: Check the installed OBS version, hardware, and drivers. Encoder support varies by system; select a software encoder or another available hardware option if necessary, then retest performance.
  • The picture looks worse after conversion: Re-encoding is lossy. Preserve the original, review the chosen output settings, and avoid unnecessary conversion when the AV1 workflow already works.

Follow YouTube’s live and content rules

Codec compatibility only answers whether YouTube can accept a video encoding; it does not establish that you have the right to stream the content. Use material you own or are licensed to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before going live. Reused or repetitive material can also raise channel-policy concerns; codec conversion does not change ownership or make copied content original. Test privately where appropriate, but do not use a test stream to bypass platform rules.
