Yes—if your Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc is eligible, insert it into the console and launch the game to claim a digital entitlement. You still need to keep the qualifying disc: this is not a way to turn a borrowed, sold, or given-away disc into a permanent disc-free license. A Series S cannot perform the claim because it has no disc drive.
How to claim the digital entitlement
- Use a disc-reading console. Xbox identifies Xbox One and Xbox Series X as consoles for claiming an entitlement. Xbox Series S cannot read discs.
- Insert an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc. Most discs support the feature, but not all. Eligibility can depend on technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors, and Xbox may add or remove eligible titles.
- Launch the game. Xbox describes inserting the supported disc and launching the game as the claim action. The published instructions do not specify additional menu labels or steps.
Xbox announced the feature on August 26, 2026, and said it was starting with thousands of titles, with more to be added over time. That statement is not a current eligible-title count. Check Xbox guidance or try the disc in the console; do not assume a particular disc qualifies based on its platform or a Play Anywhere badge alone. Xbox Wire’s announcement describes the claim process and eligibility in general terms.

What “convert” means—and why you must keep the disc
A successful claim associates a limited digital entitlement with your account, but the license remains conditional on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may require the disc to be revalidated; if you no longer possess it, access may be suspended or revoked. The digital entitlement cannot be transferred separately from the disc, so selling or giving away the disc does not leave you with a supported standalone license. See Microsoft’s Usage Rules for Digital Goods.
This is different from ordinary disc installation or backward compatibility. For a typical backward-compatible disc game, the console downloads the game but still requires the disc in the drive to play. Xbox describes the disc-to-digital entitlement as a separate process. Its backward-compatible games guidance explains the usual disc requirement.

Can you claim a disc for use on Xbox Series S?
Not on the Series S itself: it cannot read the disc or perform the claim. You need access to a supported disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X, and the disc must qualify. After a successful claim, use on other compatible digital devices remains subject to the game’s platform support and Microsoft’s account and device rules. Xbox confirms that Series S is digital-only.
Can you play the game on PC or in the cloud?
Possibly, but neither benefit applies to every claimed game. Xbox says Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming benefits are available where supported. Play Anywhere titles provide Xbox and PC versions; the game must be a participating title, and Microsoft’s rules limit use to one device at a time. Cloud play is also title-dependent. Check the particular game’s listing and support before claiming that a disc will provide either feature. Microsoft’s Play Anywhere publishing guidance describes the participating-game model.
