Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox can all provide this workflow, although support and print controls vary by version and operating system.
What an MHTML file contains
MHTML (also called MIME HTML or MHT) is a single-file web archive. It packages a page together with resources such as HTML, CSS, images and, in some cases, other embedded content. Chrome describes MHTML as a standard format supported by most browsers.
A PDF is not a copy of the archive container. It is a newly rendered, paginated document. Page breaks, fonts, dynamic elements, links, backgrounds and image placement can therefore differ from what you see when viewing the MHTML file.
Before converting: check the archive
- Make sure the file ends in
.mhtmlor.mhtand that it is fully downloaded. A partial file can open as a blank or incomplete page. - Keep the archive and the resulting PDF in a location where you have write permission.
- Open the file first and verify that text, images and styles appear correctly. Printing cannot restore resources that the browser failed to render.
- If the archive contains confidential information, prefer a local browser workflow. Uploading it to an online converter may expose its contents to that provider.
Convert MHTML to PDF in Google Chrome
- Launch Chrome and open the local
.mhtmlor.mhtfile. You can use Chrome’s Open command, or drag the file into a browser window if double-clicking does not associate the extension. - Open the print dialog with File > Print,
Ctrl+Pon Windows or Linux, orCommand+Pon macOS. - In the destination list, select the available PDF printer, commonly Save as PDF. The exact label depends on your operating system and installed print destinations.
- Set the page range, layout (portrait or landscape), paper size, margins, scale and background graphics as required.
- Inspect the preview at several pages, click Save, then choose the PDF filename and folder.
If Chrome opens the archive but the print preview is empty, close the preview, reload the file, and try the print command again. A different browser is a useful compatibility test.

Convert MHTML to PDF in Microsoft Edge
- Open the local MHTML file in Edge and wait until the page has finished rendering.
- Select Settings and more > Print, or press
Ctrl+Pon Windows orCommand+Pon macOS. - Choose the PDF destination exposed by your system, such as a Save-to-PDF destination.
- Review the print settings. Edge provides controls for page selection, margins, scale, headers and footers, and background graphics.
- Save the file, then open the saved PDF to check pagination, images, links and selectable text.
For page selection, Edge can print all pages, odd pages, even pages or a custom range. Its scale options include fit to printable area, actual size and a custom percentage. Headers and footers can add dates or page numbers, but disabling them usually produces a cleaner archive.
Convert MHTML to PDF in Firefox
- Open the
.mhtmlor.mhtfile in Firefox and confirm that the archive renders completely. - Open Firefox’s print command from the application menu or with
Ctrl+P/Command+P. - In the Destination dropdown, choose Save to PDF.
- Set the paper size, orientation, margins, scale and page range, inspect the preview, and save.
Firefox’s print documentation describes the Save to PDF destination, but it does not provide a compatibility matrix for every MHTML variant. If a particular archive displays missing styles or images, compare its rendering and preview in Chrome or Edge before choosing a production workflow.
Print settings that determine PDF quality

Always open the saved PDF, not just the preview. Search for a phrase to confirm that text is selectable, zoom into images, follow important links, and check pages containing wide tables or large graphics.

Common problems and fixes
The file opens as plain text or downloads again
The file association may point to a text editor or another application. Open the browser first and use its Open command, or drag the file into the browser window. Do not rename the contents or edit the MIME boundaries.
Images, fonts or CSS are missing
Confirm that the problem is present in the browser view before printing. Missing resources in that view normally remain missing in the PDF. Try another browser, because MHTML parsing and local-file security behavior can vary by version.
The PDF has clipped columns or unexpected page breaks
Switch to landscape, reduce the scale slightly, adjust margins, or print only the required page range. Use the preview to locate the first bad break rather than repeatedly saving trial PDFs.

Colors or panels disappear
Enable Background graphics. If you are creating a printer-friendly document, leave it disabled and accept that decorative backgrounds will not be reproduced.
Edge cannot display print preview
Retry the print command, restart Edge, and try again. If preview still fails, open the same archive in Chrome or Firefox and compare the result.

Reload the MHTML file and wait for rendering to finish before invoking print. Check that the source file is not zero bytes or truncated. If another browser shows the page correctly, use that browser’s print workflow.

Links are not clickable or text cannot be selected
The archive may contain rasterized text or a browser may have printed a visual fallback. Test text selection in the browser first, then in the PDF. A PDF made from selectable HTML generally remains searchable, but this is not guaranteed for every MHTML archive.

Opening and printing a local archive keeps the source on your computer, which is preferable for records containing personal, financial or internal information. Save the original MHTML beside the PDF when provenance matters, and record the browser and print settings if the document must be recreated later.
For occasional files, the browser dialog is simpler than installing a converter. For many files, test a representative archive in each browser you plan to automate; differences in rendering can make PDFs from the same MHTML look different. A browser print workflow also requires a graphical session or a carefully configured headless print setup, whereas a hosted screenshot API is designed for public web URLs rather than local files.

A practical verification checklist
- The browser view contains all expected text, images and styles.
- The PDF opens without an error and has the expected number of pages.
- Important text is searchable and selectable.
- Wide content is not clipped and page breaks are acceptable.
- Links, images, backgrounds and headers/footers match your purpose.
- The original MHTML file is retained if you need to prove what was archived.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between .mht and .mhtml?
They are two filename extensions commonly used for the same MIME HTML single-file archive format. Browser support can vary by version, so test the specific file rather than relying only on its extension.
Can I convert MHTML to PDF without uploading it?
Yes. Open the local file in Chrome, Edge or a compatible Firefox build and use the browser’s Save to PDF destination. The source remains on your computer.
Will converting MHTML preserve interactive behavior?
No. PDF preserves a rendered, paginated representation. Scripts, forms, animations and other interactive behavior generally will not remain interactive in the saved document.
