Converting an image to PNG does not, by itself, make it high resolution. PNG changes the file format; “high resolution” usually means sufficient pixel dimensions for the destination, and for print it also involves pixels per inch (PPI). To create a useful high-resolution PNG, first determine the required width and height, resize only when necessary, preserve the right color and transparency settings, then export and verify the result.
What “high-resolution PNG” actually means
A PNG is a lossless image format, not a resolution upgrade. Running magick photo.jpg photo.png changes JPEG data into PNG data, but the output has the same number of pixels as the source. Interpolation can estimate additional pixels when you enlarge an image; it cannot recover detail that was never captured.
Separate these two decisions:
- Pixel dimensions: the image width and height in pixels. Websites, apps and social platforms normally specify these values.
- Print density: PPI (pixels per inch), which relates a fixed pixel count to a physical print size. Changing only PPI metadata changes the nominal print size, not the underlying pixels.
Adobe’s Photoshop guidance gives 72–96 PPI as general screen/web guidance and 300 PPI as a general print recommendation. Those are rules of thumb, not universal requirements; a platform’s upload specification or your printer’s specification takes priority.
Choose the target before resizing
For websites, apps and social platforms
Find the destination’s required pixel width and height. If it accepts a range, use the largest dimension that fits your file-size and loading constraints. Keep the original aspect ratio unless the destination explicitly calls for a crop.

For printing
Start with the physical size and requested PPI. A 10 × 8 inch print at 300 PPI needs 3,000 × 2,400 pixels. If your source is smaller, enlarging it may satisfy the numeric requirement but will not recreate fine texture or lettering.
For logos, screenshots and text
Keep edges sharp, avoid unnecessary JPEG recompression, and preserve transparency when the image will sit over another background. Inspect the exported PNG at its intended display or print size, not only zoomed to 800%.
Method 1: Photoshop
- Open the source image and choose Image > Image Size.
- Keep the chain or aspect-ratio constraint enabled unless you deliberately need a crop or distortion.
- Enter the target width and height. To change the actual pixel count, enable Resample; Adobe describes this as interpolating pixel information.
- Set resolution for the intended output. For print, enter the requested PPI and confirm the resulting physical dimensions.
- Click OK, then choose File > Export > Export As, select PNG, and export.
When you only need different print metadata and do not need more pixels, turn off Resample and change the resolution. When you need a larger pixel canvas, turn Resample on and check the final dimensions.
Method 2: ImageMagick (command line)
Convert without changing dimensions
magick input.jpg output.png
This preserves the source pixel dimensions while changing the container format.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Resize into a maximum 2,000 × 2,000-pixel box
magick input.jpg -resize 2000x2000 output.png
The geometry is a bounding box: ImageMagick preserves aspect ratio, so both sides will not necessarily be exactly 2,000 pixels. Check the output dimensions after the command.

Set print resolution without changing pixel count
magick input.jpg -units PixelsPerInch -density 300 output.png
Resolution metadata and pixel resampling are separate operations. Use a resizing operation when the pixel count must change; use density metadata when the rendered physical size needs to be represented differently.
Force exact dimensions (use cautiously)
magick input.jpg -resize 2000x1500^ -gravity center -extent 2000x1500 output.png
The caret fills the target box and -extent crops the excess. This is preferable to stretching when a fixed aspect ratio is required.
Method 3: GIMP
- Open the image and choose Image > Scale Image.
- Enter the required pixel width or height. Keep the linked-chain control enabled to preserve proportions.
- Set X and Y resolution when the output is for print, then select the interpolation method and apply the scale.
- Choose File > Export As, give the file a
.pngextension, and export. - In the PNG dialog, retain an alpha-capable pixel format if transparent areas or soft transparent edges matter. Decide deliberately whether to retain the color profile and metadata.
PNG compression is lossless. A different compression level changes encoding time and file size, not image fidelity. Indexed PNG8 has only binary transparency; semi-transparent antialiased edges can become jagged or lose their partial opacity.
Method 4: Python with Pillow
Convert while preserving the existing dimensions
from PIL import Image
with Image.open("input.jpg") as image:
if image.mode not in ("RGB", "RGBA"):
image = image.convert("RGBA" if "A" in image.getbands() else "RGB")
image.save("output.png", format="PNG")
Resize and export
from PIL import Image
with Image.open("input.jpg") as image:
image = image.convert("RGBA" if "A" in image.getbands() else "RGB")
image.thumbnail((2000, 2000), Image.Resampling.LANCZOS)
image.save("output.png", format="PNG", optimize=True)
thumbnail fits the image inside the box while preserving its aspect ratio. For exact dimensions, use resize((width, height), Image.Resampling.LANCZOS), understanding that exact resizing can distort the image unless you crop first. Pillow supports common RGB and RGBA PNG modes. It does not load truncated PNG files by default, which is useful protection against incomplete downloads.
Transparency, color and metadata decisions
- Transparency: use RGBA or an equivalent full-alpha PNG when shadows, antialiased edges or partially transparent artwork are needed. Binary transparency is adequate only for fully opaque or fully transparent pixels.
- Color profile: retain the embedded profile when your workflow depends on color-managed editing or printing. Convert intentionally when a platform requires a particular color space.
- Metadata: keep metadata for archival or professional workflows; remove it when privacy, file size or a platform’s validation rules make that preferable.
- Bit depth and mode: photographs generally need RGB or RGBA. Indexed color can be smaller for simple graphics but may reduce color and transparency fidelity.
Quality and file-size trade-offs
Upscaling is most defensible when the destination requires more pixels and the source is otherwise clean. Logos, line art and text often reveal interpolation artifacts sooner than photographs. Test at the final viewing size and compare the original, not an already-compressed intermediate.

PNG is often larger than JPEG for photographs because it preserves every pixel without lossy compression. For photographic web content, confirm that PNG is actually required; for transparent illustrations, interface assets and screenshots, PNG is often appropriate. Do not repeatedly open and resave a JPEG while experimenting: each JPEG save can add loss before the final PNG conversion.
Verify the result
- Confirm the file opens and reports the intended pixel width and height.
- Check that transparent regions display correctly over both light and dark backgrounds.
- Inspect text and high-contrast edges for halos, jagged alpha or clipping.
- Verify the color profile and PPI metadata if the file is headed to print.
- Compare file size with the destination’s upload limit and test the actual upload path.
Troubleshooting
The PNG is the same size as the original
That is expected after format-only conversion. Use a scaling operation and specify the target pixel dimensions.
The image looks blurry after enlargement
Interpolation created estimated pixels; it cannot restore missing detail. Start from the highest-resolution original, enlarge less, or obtain a new capture or scan. Sharpening may improve perceived edge contrast but does not add source detail.
The output is stretched
You entered independent width and height values or disabled the aspect-ratio lock. Re-enable the constraint, or crop to the target ratio before resizing.
Transparent edges look harsh
The file was exported as indexed PNG8 or another binary-alpha format. Export RGB/RGBA with full alpha instead.

Colors changed
Check the embedded profile and the application’s color-management settings. Convert deliberately to the profile required by the destination rather than stripping profiles blindly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe PNG is unexpectedly huge
Large dimensions, photographic content, retained metadata and full-color alpha all increase size. Remove unnecessary metadata, reduce dimensions to the actual requirement, or confirm whether the destination accepts a more suitable format.
Pillow refuses to open a PNG
The file may be truncated or incomplete. Re-download or regenerate it and verify that the producer closed the file successfully; Pillow does not load truncated PNG files by default.

FAQ
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. It prevents additional JPEG loss from the conversion itself, but it cannot restore detail already discarded by JPEG compression.
Is 300 PPI required for every image?
No. It is a general print guideline. Use the printer’s specification; screen workflows are governed primarily by pixel dimensions.
Should I use PNG or PNG8?
Use full-color PNG when gradients, photographs or partial transparency matter. PNG8 is appropriate for simple graphics when binary transparency and a limited palette are acceptable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can software truly make a low-resolution image high resolution?
It can enlarge the pixel dimensions, but the additional pixels are estimates. The result may meet a delivery requirement without containing more original detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the safest way to preserve a transparent background?
Export an RGBA or other full-alpha PNG and avoid indexed PNG8 when semi-transparent edges are present.
Why did changing PPI not make my image sharper?
PPI metadata changes the nominal print size only. Sharpness changes only when the pixel data and, therefore, the actual dimensions change.
The Bottom Line
Define the destination’s pixel or print requirement first, resize only when needed, preserve alpha and color settings intentionally, and verify the exported dimensions. A format conversion alone cannot create missing detail.
