How to Convert an Image for a YouTube Thumbnail

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a standard YouTube video thumbnail, crop or extend your image to a 16:9 frame, export it as JPG or PNG, and check its file size against the limit for the device you’ll use to upload it. YouTube currently recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Its listed upload limits are 50 MB on desktop and 2 MB on mobile.

What size and format should a YouTube thumbnail be?

For a standard video, make the image 16:9. YouTube’s current guidance recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels and specifies a minimum width of 640 pixels. A 16:9 image at the minimum width would be 640 × 360 pixels. Use the recommended dimensions when your source image and editing software allow it; a larger canvas does not compensate for a blurry or poorly composed source.

YouTube accepts JPG and PNG for video thumbnails. Choose between them based on the image: JPG is often a practical choice for photographs when you need a smaller file, while PNG can preserve crisp graphic edges and text. These are general export trade-offs, not a guarantee that one format will look better for every image. Inspect the exported result at the size viewers are likely to see it.

The upload-size limit depends on how you upload: YouTube lists 50 MB for video thumbnails on desktop and 2 MB on mobile. Check the file’s actual size and use the limit for your upload device. These figures apply to video thumbnails; podcast thumbnail limits differ.

Convert and prepare your image step by step

  1. Check the original. Open the image in an editor and note its pixel dimensions and orientation. A wide image may already be close to 16:9; a portrait image will need a more substantial crop or added canvas.
  2. Set the frame to 16:9. Use the editor’s crop tool with a 16:9 ratio, or make a 16:9 canvas and position the image within it. For a standard video thumbnail, a 3840 × 2160 canvas matches YouTube’s current recommendation.
  3. Compose the crop. Move the frame to keep the main subject and any essential context visible. Avoid stretching the source to fill the frame: stretching changes the apparent shape of people and objects. If cropping would cut off something important, extend the canvas instead and choose a background that suits the image.
  4. Resize only as needed. If your editor lets you set pixel dimensions, enter the target dimensions while keeping the 16:9 ratio. Resizing a small, soft image upward does not restore detail that was not present in the original. If you have a sharper source, use it instead.
  5. Export as JPG or PNG. Choose JPG if reducing file size is important for a photographic image. Choose PNG if your thumbnail relies on sharp text or graphic edges and the resulting file fits the upload limit. Keep the original so you can revise the crop or export again.
  6. Check the exported file. Confirm that it is a JPG or PNG, its dimensions are as intended, and its file size is within the limit for desktop or mobile. Reopen the exported file to check for an unintended crop, poor compression, or text that has become difficult to read.
  7. Upload in YouTube Studio. Open the video in YouTube Studio, choose the thumbnail upload control, select your prepared image, and save. You need a verified account to use a custom thumbnail. A change can take time to appear, so do not assume it failed immediately if the old image is still showing.

Crop the image or keep the whole frame?

A 16:9 crop is usually the simplest way to make a source image fit the thumbnail shape. It fills the frame, but parts of the original may be lost. Before exporting, check that the crop still shows the subject clearly and does not remove a detail needed to understand the image.

If cropping would remove important content, preserve the full image and extend the canvas to 16:9. The empty area can be filled with a plain color, a softly blurred extension, or another background treatment supported by your editor. This keeps the original proportions, but the result may have less room for the subject than a carefully chosen crop. Do not distort the source to avoid making that choice.

Choose JPG or PNG

Format Useful when What to check
JPG You have a photographic image and want a smaller export. Look for compression artifacts around faces, fine detail, and text. If they are visible, export again at a higher quality setting or try PNG.
PNG Your image has crisp graphic edges or text that you want to preserve. Check the file size before uploading, particularly if you will upload from a mobile device with the lower stated limit.

Both formats are supported for video thumbnails. Neither choice guarantees a particular file size or visual result; those depend on the image and export settings. If an export exceeds the applicable upload limit, try JPG for a photographic image, reduce the JPG quality setting gradually, or simplify the image. Reopen each new export to make sure it still looks acceptable.

Prepare images for YouTube’s thumbnail experiment

YouTube’s Test & Compare feature can test up to three title and thumbnail variations, subject to eligibility, in YouTube Studio on desktop. For an experiment, aim for at least 1280 × 720 pixels for each thumbnail variant. YouTube says variations below that resolution are downscaled to 854 × 480 pixels for the experiment. This experiment-specific threshold is not a replacement for the general thumbnail guidance: YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for standard video thumbnails.

Before submitting variants, check that each one uses the same 16:9 shape and remains legible at a small display size. The experiment has separate eligibility limits, so access to custom thumbnails does not by itself establish that Test & Compare will be available for a particular account or video.

Check the thumbnail’s content, not just its file

A file can meet the dimensions, format, and size requirements and still violate YouTube’s thumbnail policies. The policy prohibits, among other material, pornography, nudity, graphic or disturbing violence, and imagery that misleads viewers about what the video contains. Depending on the case, YouTube may remove or age-restrict a thumbnail or video. Review the current policy before publishing, and make sure the image accurately represents the video.

Common conversion and upload problems

  • The image is rejected for being too large. Check whether you are uploading on desktop or mobile, then compare the file size with the corresponding limit: 50 MB on desktop or 2 MB on mobile for video thumbnails. Export a smaller file and check its appearance before uploading again.
  • The subject looks stretched. The image may have been resized to a 16:9 shape without preserving its proportions. Undo that change and use a 16:9 crop or extend the canvas instead.
  • The crop cuts off the subject. Reopen the source, adjust the crop frame, and check the composition before export. If no crop preserves the important content, use an expanded canvas.
  • The file is the wrong format. Export specifically as JPG or PNG rather than only changing the filename extension. Confirm the exported file opens and has the intended format.
  • The thumbnail looks soft or text is hard to read. Check whether the source image is low resolution, whether it was enlarged substantially, or whether JPG compression was too strong. Start from a sharper source where possible and export again with less compression or as PNG.
  • The old thumbnail still appears after saving. YouTube says a change can take time to appear. Confirm that you saved the new selection in Studio, then allow time for the updated thumbnail to show.
  • A Test & Compare variant looks different from its file. Check its dimensions. YouTube says experiment variants below 1280 × 720 are downscaled to 854 × 480, so prepare each variant at or above 1280 × 720.
