To convert a qualifying physical Xbox game, insert its disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game. If that specific disc is eligible, Xbox presents the claim flow and adds a digital entitlement to your account. You must continue to possess the qualifying disc, and eligibility can vary by game and change over time.
This process does not turn every Xbox disc into a permanently transferable digital purchase. It is a conditional license administered under Microsoft’s digital-goods rules, with benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming available only for games that support them.

What “disc to digital” means on Xbox
Xbox announced on August 26, 2026 that players could claim a digital entitlement for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games. Jason Ronald, Xbox’s vice president of next generation, described the process as inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. Xbox said the rollout started with “thousands of titles” and would continue to expand, but it did not publish a precise, exhaustive count of eligible discs.
The resulting entitlement is not an unrestricted replacement for ownership of the physical copy. Microsoft’s Usage rules for Digital Goods make the license conditional on your continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may revalidate that condition and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess the disc. The license also cannot be transferred separately from the disc.

In practical terms, the disc acts as the qualifying proof for a digital license. The game may then be downloadable or usable through supported digital services, but the disc-related conditions still apply.
Check your hardware and disc before trying
Use the following checks before you begin. They prevent the most common false assumption: that any Xbox game disc can be converted on any current Xbox console.
| Hardware or disc | Can it perform the disc claim step? | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One with a disc drive | Yes, when the individual disc is supported | Xbox’s announcement identifies Xbox One consoles as supported claim hardware. |
| Xbox Series X with a disc drive | Yes, when the individual disc is supported | Xbox’s announcement identifies Xbox Series X consoles as supported claim hardware. |
| Xbox Series S | No | Series S has no physical-disc playback capability, so it cannot perform the required insertion step. See Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance. |
| Original Xbox or Xbox 360 disc | Not in the disc-to-digital category described by Microsoft’s current policy | The current rules describe supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs, not original Xbox or Xbox 360 discs. |
| Xbox One or Series X disc with unknown eligibility | Not guaranteed | Microsoft says technical, licensing, publishing and other factors can determine eligibility. |
You need a console that can read the disc
The claim flow starts with physical media. A Series S cannot read a disc because it is a digital-only console, so there is no way to begin the conversion on that model. If your only console is a Series S, you would need access to a disc-drive Xbox One or Series X to test the disc. Do not buy another console solely on the assumption that a particular game will qualify; eligibility remains game-specific.

Microsoft’s current rules cover supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. They do not place original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs in the disc-to-digital license category described here. A backward-compatible game may run on newer hardware in some circumstances, but backward compatibility and this specific digital-entitlement program are separate questions.
Step-by-step: claim the digital entitlement
- Identify the exact disc. Check whether it is an Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc. Do not assume that a title’s name, a backward-compatible release or a disc from another Xbox generation qualifies.
- Use a disc-drive console. Start with an Xbox One or Xbox Series X that can physically read the disc. A Series S cannot complete this process because it has no disc drive.
- Insert the disc. Put the qualifying disc into the console. The disc itself is the key input to the claim process; there is no documented web form that substitutes for inserting it.
- Launch the game. Xbox’s published procedure is to insert the supported disc and launch the game. The official announcement does not provide a universal, current menu-by-menu walkthrough or fixed button labels, so follow the prompt the console displays for that particular disc.
- Read the eligibility prompt carefully. If Xbox offers a claim or digital-entitlement option, review the conditions shown before accepting. The prompt is the practical confirmation that the disc is recognized for the program. If the game simply behaves like an ordinary disc installation and no claim option appears, do not assume that a digital entitlement was created.
- Complete the on-console claim flow. Accept the displayed terms only if they match your intended use. The exact screens can vary by title and by Xbox software version; Xbox has not published one universal sequence for every eligible disc.
- Keep the qualifying disc. Store it safely after the claim. Microsoft’s rules condition the license on continued possession, and Microsoft may revalidate that condition later. Selling, giving away or otherwise losing the disc can put access to the claimed entitlement at risk.
The official material does not specify a single library label, download button or account page that proves every claim. Use the console’s actual confirmation and retain the disc rather than relying on an assumed menu state.
Eligibility is decided per disc, not just per game name
“Eligible Xbox game” is not a universal label that applies to every physical copy. Microsoft says eligibility may vary for technical, licensing, publishing or other reasons, and that it may add or remove qualifying discs. Two editions of a game can therefore receive different treatment if their publishing rights, region, content or technical implementation differ.
Xbox’s announcement says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature and that the initial rollout includes thousands of titles. “Most” and “thousands” are broad descriptions, not a percentage or a current, exhaustive catalog. No official disc-by-disc public list is established in the available material.

What can make a disc ineligible
- Technical constraints: the disc or game may not support the entitlement mechanism.
- Licensing restrictions: rights for a title, edition, soundtrack or other content may prevent a digital license from being issued.
- Publishing arrangements: a publisher or release variant may be excluded even when a similarly named edition is supported.
- Policy changes: Microsoft can add or remove qualifying discs, so eligibility is not guaranteed permanently.
Because Microsoft does not provide an exhaustive public list in the cited announcement, the most reliable test is the console’s claim flow for your exact disc.
What happens if no claim option appears?
A missing claim prompt is not proof that the console is malfunctioning. It can mean that the disc is not eligible, that the console cannot read that edition, or that the title is outside the program’s supported generation.
If you are using a Series S
Stop there: the Series S cannot read physical discs. Move the test to an Xbox One or Series X with a disc drive. Installing a digital copy on Series S does not convert the physical disc by itself.
If the disc is an original Xbox or Xbox 360 release
The current policy category described by Microsoft does not include those discs. A game may have other backward-compatibility or purchase options, but do not treat those as this disc-to-digital entitlement.

If the game launches normally but offers no claim
Check the disc edition and generation, then try the same disc on supported claim hardware if available. If the claim still does not appear, treat the disc as not confirmed eligible. Microsoft’s rules allow eligibility to differ by technical, licensing and publishing factors, and the official announcement does not provide a manual override.
If you expected a specific game to qualify
Do not infer eligibility from online comments, a similarly titled release or a retailer listing. The claim prompt for the exact disc is the relevant confirmation. Xbox’s announcement does not publish a universal button sequence that can force a claim when the console does not offer one.
The license remains tied to your physical copy
The most important limitation is continued possession. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules state that the limited license remains conditioned on possessing the qualifying disc. Microsoft may require revalidation and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess it.

This condition affects resale, gifting and lending decisions. The digital entitlement is not a separate asset that you can transfer while keeping the disc’s value for another person. The rules also say the limited license cannot be transferred separately from the disc. If you sell or give away the disc, you should not represent that you are retaining an independent digital copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the disc still matters after a successful claim
The claim creates a digital entitlement, but it does not erase the qualification attached to the physical media. Microsoft can check that qualification again, so keep the disc even if the game later appears in a digital library or can be downloaded without inserting it every time.
What “digital” does not mean
- It does not mean every device can run the game.
- It does not mean the license can be sold separately from the disc.
- It does not mean an ineligible edition becomes eligible because another edition supports the program.
- It does not remove Microsoft’s ability to change eligibility or enforce the possession condition.
Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud gaming are conditional benefits
Xbox says a claimed entitlement may provide benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where the relevant game supports them. Those benefits are not automatic for every converted disc.
| Benefit | When it applies | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Play Anywhere | Only when the specific game supports Play Anywhere and the entitlement is recognized for that program | A converted disc does not automatically grant a PC version for every title. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Only where cloud support exists for the relevant game and service | Cloud access is not promised for every disc-based game. |
| Use on other Xbox consoles | Subject to the game’s compatibility, account entitlement and Microsoft’s conditions | The disc-to-digital claim is not a blanket guarantee for every Xbox device. |
Before planning a PC, handheld or cloud setup, verify that the individual game supports the service you intend to use. Xbox’s announcement describes these features as possible benefits, not universal rights attached to every eligible disc.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Example: a disc such as The Witcher 3
A reader might ask whether a “Witcher 3 Remastered” disc can be used digitally through Xbox Play Anywhere. That question illustrates the correct decision process but does not establish that this particular edition qualifies.
- Confirm the disc’s exact Xbox generation and edition.
- Use an Xbox One or Series X with a disc drive.
- Insert the disc and launch the game.
- Look for the console’s claim prompt.
- If the prompt appears, read the conditions and complete the claim.
- If no prompt appears, treat eligibility as unconfirmed rather than assuming Play Anywhere access.
Even when a title receives a digital entitlement, Play Anywhere and cloud features depend on that title’s support for each service. The example cannot be used to infer eligibility for other editions or regions.
Questions to settle before you rely on the conversion
Can I perform the conversion on Xbox Series S?
No. Series S has no physical-disc playback capability, so it cannot perform the required insertion step.

Bottom line
Use a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a disc drive, insert the exact Xbox One or Series X game disc, and launch the game. A claim prompt is the practical confirmation that the disc qualifies. Keep possession of the disc afterward: the digital entitlement remains conditional, cannot be transferred separately, and does not automatically include Play Anywhere or cloud access.
