Keep the PSD as your editable master and save the PNG as a separate file. Exporting never has to replace the layered document.
Check that the transparency is real before exporting
A PNG can only keep transparency that exists in the document. If an opaque background layer sits behind your artwork, the exported file will show that background, whatever format you choose.

- Look at the Layers panel and confirm there is no solid-filled background layer covering the areas you want transparent.
- Remember that the grey-and-white checkerboard in the canvas is Photoshop’s transparency display. It is not part of the image. Changing the transparency grid in Photoshop’s preferences alters how the checkerboard looks, not the pixels in the file.
- If a layer uses a fill or a mask that hides edges you expected to be clear, fix that before you export.
Method 1: Quick Export as PNG
Adobe’s Quick Export documentation, last updated October 4, 2026, describes this route as the fastest way to produce a PNG. It uses the format preferences Photoshop has already saved, and Adobe states that it does not alter the original file.

- Open the PSD in Photoshop.
- Select Share > Quick export as PNG.
- Choose a destination folder and save the file.
Because Quick Export follows saved settings, check those settings before relying on it for a transparent image. If the output comes out with an opaque background, switch to Export As, where you can see and change the options for that single export.

Method 2: Export As with Transparency enabled
Export As is the better choice when you need to control the output. It lets you choose the format, scale the image, adjust the canvas, and confirm transparency for this export only.
- Open the PSD and select File > Export > Export As.
- Set the format to PNG.
- Enable Transparency if the output needs transparent pixels.
- Adjust the image dimensions if you need a different size. Photoshop can scale the image in this dialog.
- Review the canvas bounds. Adobe says that when a document has no background and the chosen format supports transparency, any extra canvas area is transparent.
- Export the file to a folder outside your working PSD folder if you want to keep the two clearly separate.
Keep the layered PSD intact
Do not flatten the only copy of your PSD to make a PNG. If you use the save dialog, Adobe’s Save Files documentation, last updated February 23, 2026, describes File > Save a Copy as a way to create a flattened PNG while leaving the original document open and unchanged. Your layers, effects, and editing options stay in the PSD, so future edits still start from the full file.

Export settings and what they produce
Adobe’s export settings page, last updated February 23, 2026, ties the PNG options to bit depth. These values apply to PNG export from Export As:

For a transparent PNG, the 32-bit row is the one that keeps the alpha channel. The 8-bit and 24-bit rows are not the choice for transparent output.

Why PNG and not JPEG
- PNG is a lossless format, so exported pixels are not degraded by compression.
- PNG supports transparency in grayscale and RGB images.
- JPEG does not support transparency, so a JPEG export will place a background behind any transparent areas.
- PSD is the format to keep when you need layers, effects, and editing to stay available.
Choosing between Quick Export and Export As
- Quick Export suits repeat exports where your saved PNG settings are already correct.
- Export As suits one-off exports where you need to confirm transparency, change the scale, or adjust the canvas.
Verify the PNG
- Open the exported PNG in an image viewer or back in Photoshop.
- Place it over a bright or strongly coloured background. Areas that were transparent should show that background through the image.
- If a solid colour appears where you expected transparency, return to the PSD, check for an opaque layer, and export again with Transparency enabled.
Menu labels and saved defaults can change between Photoshop releases. If your menus differ from the paths above, look for the same commands and settings in your version.
