The reliable way to convert a screenshot to JPEG is to open it in an image editor or viewer, choose Save As or Export, select JPEG or JPG, and save a new copy. Renaming .png to .jpg does not convert the image; it only changes text in the filename and can leave software unable to read the file.
The exact menu depends on your operating system, app, and version. Keep the original screenshot until you have checked the exported JPEG, especially when the image contains small text, sharp interface edges, or transparency.
What changes when you convert a screenshot to JPEG?
Most screenshots are PNG files because PNG preserves crisp text, flat colors, and transparency. JPEG uses lossy compression: the exported copy may be smaller, but fine text and high-contrast edges can show artifacts. JPEG also has no transparency channel, so transparent areas are normally flattened against a background chosen by the exporting app.
- Use JPEG when a website, form, or older application specifically requires JPG/JPEG.
- Keep PNG when you need maximum legibility, transparency, repeated editing, or pixel-perfect evidence.
- Compare the result at 100% zoom. File size is not guaranteed to decrease; image content and the selected quality setting control the result.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Convert an existing screenshot in Paint
- Open the screenshot file in Paint. You can right-click the file, choose Open with, and select Paint.
- Choose File > Save as. In some Paint releases, use the format drop-down in the Save dialog.
- Select JPEG picture (the file will normally use the
.jpgextension). - Choose a different filename or folder so the PNG original remains available, then select Save.
- Close and reopen the new file, or check its properties, to confirm that it is identified as a JPEG image.
Microsoft Support documents opening and editing screenshots in Paint, while its Snipping Tool guidance covers capturing, editing, saving, and sharing a snip. The available export formats can vary by Windows release and application, so use the format actually shown in your Save As dialog.

Save a snip as JPEG
- Capture the screen with Snipping Tool (for example, press Windows logo key + Shift + S).
- Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to edit the captured snip.
- Use the Save control, then inspect the Save dialog’s file-type list. If JPEG/JPG is offered, select it and save a new copy.
- If JPEG is not offered, choose Edit > Edit with Paint, then follow the Paint export steps above.
Do not assume that every Snipping Tool version exposes the same formats. The conversion happens in the editor’s export step, not in the capture shortcut.
iPhone and iPad screenshots
Apple’s iPhone User Guide says screenshots are stored in Photos and can be cropped or marked up from the screenshot interface. The reviewed guide does not document a universal, direct “export as JPEG” sequence in Photos, and the ordinary screenshot-save action should not be described as a guaranteed JPEG output.
Practical iPhone workflow
- Take the screenshot and tap its preview, or open it in Photos.
- Crop or annotate it if needed, then use the app’s share or export controls.
- Use an installed editor that explicitly offers JPEG/JPG in an export menu. Save a new copy and verify the file type.
- If no trusted iPhone app offers JPEG export, transfer the image to a computer and export it there with Paint or another editor that lists JPEG.
Menus differ by iOS version and third-party app. Do not rely on changing the extension in the Files app. For confidential screenshots, prefer an on-device or offline editor over a web converter that uploads the image.
Android screenshots
Android devices and gallery apps vary by manufacturer and version. The sources reviewed do not establish a universal Android setting or button sequence that exports every screenshot as JPEG. Open the screenshot in an editor whose export or Save As menu explicitly lists JPEG/JPG, then save a separate copy. If the gallery only offers sharing, move the file to a desktop editor rather than renaming it.

Move a phone screenshot to a Windows PC first
Transfer and conversion are separate operations. Microsoft Photos supports importing selected photos and videos from an iPhone or Android phone and lets you choose an import location. After import, open the copied screenshot in Paint and export it as JPEG.
For supported Android configurations, Microsoft’s Phone Link can provide access to recent photos and screenshot-folder files; Microsoft notes that this route requires Android 7.0 or newer and is intended for recent files. It copies the image but does not change its format. Check the imported file before deleting the phone original.
Choosing a workflow
| Situation | Best approach | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One screenshot already on Windows | Paint or another local editor | JPEG appears in Save As; keep the PNG backup |
| Screenshot on iPhone | Editor with explicit JPEG export, or transfer to a PC | Photos alone may not document a direct JPEG export |
| Screenshot on Android | Manufacturer editor if it lists JPEG, otherwise desktop editor | Labels and capabilities vary by device and version |
| Many screenshots | An editor that documents batch export | Confirm batch support before processing; do not assume it |
| Private or regulated content | Offline/local conversion | A web converter requires uploading the image to a third party |
JPEG quality, dimensions, and transparency
Choose quality for readability
If the export dialog has a quality slider, inspect a preview at 100% before saving. Higher quality generally preserves more detail and creates a larger file; lower quality can introduce ringing around text and blocky color patches. There is no single setting that suits every screenshot.
Do not resize unless required
Conversion and resizing are different operations. Leave the pixel dimensions unchanged when a form only requests JPEG. Resize only when the destination specifies a maximum width, height, or file size, and check that interface text remains legible afterward.

Handle transparent areas deliberately
JPEG cannot retain transparency. If the source PNG has transparent pixels, the exporting application must flatten them against a color. Check the background before submitting the file; a white or black fill can change how the screenshot appears.
Confirm that the conversion worked
- Reopen the exported file in a separate viewer.
- Check the file properties or information panel for an image type such as JPEG/JPG and the expected dimensions.
- Look for accidental double extensions such as
screen.jpg.png; enable file-name extensions in your file manager if necessary. - Zoom into small text, icons, and thin lines. If they are damaged, return to the PNG and export at a higher quality or keep PNG if the destination permits it.
Common problems and fixes
Changing the extension did not work
Renaming screenshot.png to screenshot.jpg leaves PNG-encoded data inside the file. Reopen the original in an editor and use its JPEG export or Save As command.
JPEG is missing from the menu
The current app may only save in its native or limited formats. Use Paint or another editor that explicitly lists JPEG. On a phone, transfer the file to a desktop if no installed app provides that export.
The exported file looks blurry
Raise the JPEG quality, avoid unnecessary resizing, and compare against the original at 100% zoom. JPEG compression is lossy, so very small text may never look as clean as PNG.

The file is larger than the PNG
JPEG is not guaranteed to be smaller. Try a suitable quality setting, but do not sacrifice readability merely to reduce bytes. Flat-color screenshots can compress differently from photographic content.
The destination rejects the file
Confirm that the file is a baseline JPEG rather than an unsupported variant, that it has the required extension, and that dimensions and file size meet the destination’s rules. Re-export with the editor’s standard JPEG option if necessary.
A web converter raises a privacy concern
The image must be uploaded to the provider. Do not send screenshots containing passwords, personal records, unreleased designs, or customer data unless the service’s data-handling terms are acceptable. Local conversion avoids that upload.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is JPG different from JPEG?
No. JPG and JPEG are filename extensions for the same image format; choose whichever label the destination accepts.
Can I convert a screenshot without losing quality?
A JPEG export is inherently lossy. Keep the PNG original and use the highest practical JPEG quality, or submit PNG when the destination allows it.
Will converting to JPEG remove metadata?
That depends on the exporting application. Check its export options and inspect the resulting file if metadata matters.
Do I need to retake the screenshot?
No. Open the existing screenshot and export a new JPEG copy; recapture only when the original image is unavailable or incorrect.
