To convert a Mexican stock quote from pesos (MXN), multiply it by an exchange rate quoted in your currency per peso, or divide it by a rate quoted in pesos per unit of your currency. For a USD/MXN rate stated as pesos per U.S. dollar, divide the MXN share price by that rate. Match the rate date to the stock quote, label the units, and treat the result as a reference conversion—not necessarily the amount your broker will charge.
Use the exchange-rate units to choose multiply or divide
Write down the share quote and the exchange rate with their units before calculating. Banco de México defines an exchange rate as “the price of one unit of foreign currency expressed in terms of the national currency.” In a USD/MXN quote expressed as pesos per dollar, the number tells you how many Mexican pesos equal one U.S. dollar.

Let PMXN be the stock price in pesos:
- If the rate is destination currency per MXN, multiply: Pdestination = PMXN × rate.
- If the rate is MXN per one destination-currency unit, divide: Pdestination = PMXN ÷ rate.
Check that the MXN units cancel, leaving your investing currency. For example, if a share is quoted at 1,100 MXN and the illustrative rate is 11 MXN per USD, then 1,100 MXN ÷ 11 MXN/USD = 100 USD. Banco de México uses this kind of arithmetic in an educational example; 11 MXN/USD is not presented here as a current exchange rate.
Choose a rate that fits the comparison
There is no single Banxico rate that answers every question. Its portal distinguishes reference series by how and when they are calculated. A reference observation helps compare values; it does not guarantee the rate available to a retail investor.

| Rate or source | What it represents | Timing and use |
|---|---|---|
| FIX | An average of wholesale-market quotations for transactions payable in 48 hours, as described by Banco de México. | Made available from noon on banking business days and published in the Official Gazette one banking business day after determination. Suitable as an identified official reference, not a broker execution quote. |
| Mexican peso closing foreign exchange rate | A rate calculated from a weighted sample of quotations. | The sample window is 1:55 p.m. to 2:05 p.m.; publication is at 2:10 p.m. on banking business days. Use it only when this series and its timing suit the comparison. |
| Broker’s transaction rate | The rate the broker applies under its own terms, potentially including a spread or other charges. | Check the broker’s quote and account terms for the transaction. Banxico reference rates do not establish this amount. |
See Banco de México’s exchange-rate portal for the series descriptions and publication details.
Match the rate date to the stock quote
Exchange rates move over time. For a historical comparison, use a rate observation from the same date as the stock quote where possible, and identify which series you chose. Banco de México provides a daily historical USD/MXN series with metadata about its construction. If you instead use a rate from another date, state that explicitly; a current conversion of an old stock price is not a same-date comparison.

For currencies other than U.S. dollars
Use a rate explicitly expressed in your destination currency and MXN, then apply the same unit rule. Banco de México describes its published cross rates for currencies other than USD as informational. The portal says those rates are constructed using the FIX and market-average USD equivalents for EUR and JPY published by the IMF, with Reuters data used on some U.S. holidays; it identifies a separate source for CAD.

A July 31, 2026 notice in Mexico’s Official Gazette says peso equivalence with other foreign currencies is calculated using the market quote for those currencies against USD on the payment date. That payment methodology is not a promise of the rate your brokerage will apply. Name the destination currency, rate source, and date instead of treating all cross rates as interchangeable. See the Official Gazette notice for its stated method.

The arithmetic translates a quoted share price; it does not calculate the cost of a completed transaction or investment performance. Intermediaries set their own buy and sell prices, which can differ from reference rates. Your brokerage’s terms determine the exchange rate, spread, fees, and processing details applied to an order.

Banco de México’s educational material explains that institutions’ purchase and sale prices differ, with the buying price lower than the selling price. Its material also notes that Mexican shares may be bought in U.S. markets through ADRs, but that does not establish that a particular security is available through a particular broker or that an ADR matches a local listing in price, rights, fees, or liquidity. See Banco de México’s financial-system educational material.
